Sharia "courts" in the UK are unofficial bodies that no one has to go to and have no power to enforce their "decisions" and there are certainly no areas where British law enforcement does not go.

They're basically mediators, right? I've read that that's what Orthodox Jews, I mean the hardcore Hassidic types, do to resolve disputes based in religious law. The parties involved (say, a couple getting a divorce) basically go to a special rabbi and sign an agreement saying they'll follow his decision, and then let him make his call as a representative of the religious law. So they're more or less bound by a civil contract to obey the agreement, but it's not like a rabbi has the ability to send you to jail. It's more like Judge Judy kind of stuff, really. "Pay your ex-wife $500" or whatever.

Another one gets it....Thank you.

I am still waiting for Termy to post a map of the "no go areas" in the UK

DUBAI — A Norwegian woman in a rape case in Dubai said she was pardoned Monday of an extramarital sex charge in the Muslim emirate and allowed to fly home, ending a four-month ordeal.
"I was told that I've been pardoned," a smiling Marte Dalelv, 24, told reporters outside a Scandinavian social centre, adding her passport had been returned and she would leave the Gulf state "as soon as possible".
"I'm very, very happy. This is the perfect ending (and) it feels really, really good," said Dalelv, dressed in a white shirt and a mid-length skirt.
In Oslo, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide also said Dalelv was being allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a member.
"Marte (Dalelv) is released! Thanks to everyone who signed up to help," the minister wrote on Twitter, adding that she would be returning home soon.
A spokeswoman for his ministry told AFP that Dalelv had been pardoned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum and was not being deported.
"She hasn't been deported, she has been pardoned. She can remain in Dubai if she wishes. Her passport has been returned to her," said Ragnhild Imerslund.

Or they are too cheap or lazy to change the signs. Or it's historical and they want to keep it that way. Or they figure enough of the WWII people are still around. Unless you're walking down the street and hearing people speak mostly Polish, I'm not sure you have a very strong point.

I've worked with a lot of first generation Mexican immigrants. They speak mostly Spanish. Their kids are bilingual.

Back in the "old days"

Define "old days". Ellis Island had a literacy test. It was a federal law that anyone over the age of 16 had to pass one starting in 1917.

I don't recall that from my visit to the museum there a few years ago, but I'll take your word on it. I was speaking of even earlier immigrants, the Pennsylvania Dutch in particular, who came here in the 18th and 19th centuries, and had newspapers in German, public school classes taught in German, etc, for generations.

Also, was that just an Ellis Island thing? Ellis Island is famous, but it was only one station.

One guy I know now, a successful businessman, when he came here, he could barely speak any English, let alone write the Latin alphabet, so he did his best and now his official legal name in the US is misspelled. His kid (who he gave an English name that he can't pronounce correctly) can barely write her own name in the alphabet of her parents' native tongue. That's speedy assimilation.

My paternal grandparents grew up speaking Dutch in some rather insular farm communities in the northern Midwest. They were actually third-generation Americans (their families arrived in the 1830s, I believe), but since they grew up on farms around other Dutch people, that's the language and culture they grew up in. However, by the time my father's generation was born, they were speaking English at home. My father left the area after he graduated H.S., so I grew up in a more heavily "assimilated" suburban culture several states away.

My maternal grandfather grew up speaking French at home, although his people were absorbed into the United States due to the Louisiana Purchase. Although the backcountry Cajuns like my grandfather's family didn't really assimilate that readily, as they still spoke French at home. But my grandfather left home at an early age, and traveling through other areas of the country, he felt strong pressures to assimilate.

My maternal grandmother was the only one out of my four grandparents who started out speaking English at home. She was born and raised in Missouri, but went to college in California, which is where she met my grandfather.

Of course, by the time I was born, our family spoke English only.

You hear a fair amount of Polish and there are some newer immigrants as well. My point was that in the "old days" not every immigrant instantly abandoned their old tongue and only spoke English.

Wow! Did you see all those Brit racists, refusing to embrace their new neighbors in the MOTS interviews? How awful, saying things like: "We have our own laws" and "If they don't like it, they can leave". Intolerance in the Nth degree. [/sarcasm]

Did you even bother reading this link? It clearly says the London bobbies arrested a group of Muslim men who had been harassing people on the street at night for not conforming to their beliefs. How could they have done that if they couldn't go into the Muslim neighborhoods in London?
quote:

the arrests made by police in recent days of a number of men for a string of incidents in London. These involve radical Muslim men trying to enforce Islamic law at night in parts of London. This is done by informing people that they are in ‘a Muslim area’ and demanding their compliance with sharia principles.

Phydeaux -> RE: Gotta love that,...."Multiculturalism!" (7/22/2013 11:25:04 PM)

I'm not even going to argue with you any more.. FactlessKen. Go look on google for interviews of bobbies *admitting* there are areas the police will not go, except occassionally, in force to break up riots.

You posted the link that proved you wrong. How many more facts would you like? Pick a street corner in London and I'll see if my friend can get down there and get a pic of a bobby there or would one of the CCTV cameras be good enough? Those things are pretty much everywhere in London now.

You must have missed the answer. Foreign embassies. That include those of Muslim countries.

Also, think where Snowden was hiding.........

And also, Ken never proved his point at all. I see that only those whoo disagree with you need to prove anything. Now as to the legal status of embassies, do I really have to go and find the fucking treaties and shit or are you going to admit that it was a stupid statement ? It was too broad of a statement, which made it partly untrue. Partly untrue is not true. Period.

Do I need to provide this answer a few more times, like repetition so it can be memorized ?

thezeppo -> RE: Gotta love that,...."Multiculturalism!" (7/23/2013 3:08:47 AM)

Foreign embassies are protected by treaties, rather than being 'no-go' areas due to their being unmanageably violent. I've lived in a neighbourhood that was majority Muslim, and there wasn't tension. My ex-girlfriend is Muslim, and yet we never had any problems (at least not about that, my "skills" with the ladies is a thread all by itself). Tension is well-reported (particularly in the mail or the spectator) but its by no means inevitable.

Laughable that you conflate Embassies with no go areas. It shows an astounding level of ignorance on Diplomatic Law.
