ORIGINAL: ShaharThorne I admit that I am morbidly obese due to eating the wrong things. I am trying to kick processed foods and sugars out but when Mom bakes something, it smells so good and I have to have a piece (especially if it is chocolate cake). I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I tell my doctor that I do eat it. Lately, I have been thinking of perhaps doing the Paleo diet. I do eat meat and some veggies but committing myself to a diet that I have no idea on how to work with it is troublesome. I could order the book on eBay but I just paid for Lizard's alcohol server cert so she can get a job at a good restaurant. I gave my South Beach diet book away because it did not do a thing for me except put me to sleep. I am thinking of perhaps ordering a diabetic cookbook though I don't have the disease. I try to exercise everyday but I have to deal with back spasms if I overdo it. It is where if I go shopping, I use the motorized carts at Walmart. 15 minutes on the concrete floors = spasms = Norco + Flexirel come bedtime. I try to eliminate pasta but I make a big crockpot of beef tips when I get stew meat on sale. Onion and mushroom soup mix with a half stick of butter (I hate margarine, no flavor) and cook on high for a couple to 3 hours and then you boil the noodles, drain and mix them with the beef tips...another favorite is alfredo with shrimp, which is a monthly staple when my brother's family comes over. I could use my SNAP benefits but when you can only find a few items in the store, it is hard to maintain any diet. Has anyone tried the Paleo and is it worth getting the books? I won't be able to get them until after the 2nd when I get paid (alas...the life of disability...) and I think this might help out with the IBS attacks as well. I plan to bring this up with my doctor because I am at a damnable plateau (262, down from 326). The advertising diet systems (WW, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem) is too expensive for my pocketbook. You've managed to lose over 60 pounds. You're 46 years old. Are you trying to tell us that you don't know how to lose weight, because obviously you do. Furthermore, you didn't lose the weight by eating fried foods, tater tots, cakes, lemonade pies, fudge, 3 musketeers, pasta, throwing 1/2 stick of butter in the crock pot, donuts and so forth. You know this. You know what it takes. I think what you're hoping to hear is that if you try the Paleo diet, you'll have the willpower to resist all the above foods... all the processed high fat sugary stuff. The Paleo diet works. South Beach works. Sugar busters works. They work if you follow the rules, and donuts and 3 Musketeers and tater tots, and patties, etc are not part of following the rules. The only diet I know that will allow you those foods are the ones where you follow your calorie restricted balanced diet 6 days out of 7, and you get a freebie day. That works for some people who have to have their yummies, for others it just makes the cravings for those foods worse. You already know what it takes. You already know about exercise. You already know about calories. What you don't know is how to get motivated to do it again. You know what a good diet is? It's one that you can live with.
