It's the geodon. All the atypical antipsychotics cause weight gain.
I will say my daughter's doing a lot better on the Seroquel XR, extended release. She also finds it easier to lose weight on the XR instead of the usual take a pill, get slammed with it, have it wear off and take another. Which would cause a couple of heavy eating episodes a day.

However the Seroquel XR is still under patent, so your insurance won't cover it. It is worth considering changing in about three years when it goes generic.

LW: the state appointed her mother as her guardian after a bad episode. If she had the money to hire a lawyer to request a change of guardian, she'd have the money for the gym. They don't have it.

I want her to get on the band wagon with me as well. Since she retired, she gained over 30 pounds and bitches about it. We do have the exercise bike and we try to be on it 10 minutes a day (she has arthritis in her back and hips). When we had Georgie, she made sure he got walked 2 times a day (I did the walking about the farm with him).

She is retired and is surviving on less than $1500 a month. I get just over $800. I got my bills (student loans, internet, insurances) and she covers the rest. Luckily the house, land and van are paid for. I get $56 on SNAP and use that on my personal food.

I got one guy trying to buy his pyramid scheme products to help with my arthritis and gout. Claims one price and in reality is $20 more...I know that Mom will not go for his claims.

We tried Curves for a year. Instead of losing weight, I ballooned up to 326...their scales did not go that high.

Gas is $3.49 at Walmart. We live in the middle of no where...if it wasn't for a neighbor calling for another one to help us out, Mom might not had gone to the hospital on May 4th about the broken right fibula. Now I keep everyone's number on the desk.

I avoid doughnuts when Mom brings them home. If I want something sweet, I get a bag of fun size 3 musketeers...one bite is plenty for me to enjoy. Chips are my failing...I always want something salty and chips fulfills that requirement. I also got pecans in the pantry but they put too much salt on them...can't they just make unsalted pecans or do I have to buy the halves that they use in pecan pies? Can't stand almonds because they hurt my gums when I try to chew them.

Drinks...I usually have one Diet MD a week, especially while shopping. Rest of the time, one glass of diet green tea from Arizona and then water afterwards. I take Lasix for edema, so I am usually running to the bathroom. I avoid any drinks with HFCS in it.

Cereals...I love Great Grains cereal with raisins, dates and pecans in it. Having Walmart keep it in stock is another question. After that, Honey nut Cheerios. with no sugar...it is sweet enough by itself.

Proteins...usually some steak or stew meat. Once in a while, Hamburger Helper, Chicken Helper or Tuna Helper. I love salmon patties but convincing Mom to make those is a hassle...LOL! I get the beer battered fish and bake them in the oven with tater tots. If I find a good marbled steak, we cook it on the contact grill so the fats are drained away.

I sometimes buy the giant bar of Hershey's special dark chocolate and make that sucker last a while. a section every 3 to 5 days.

I have been treated for sleep apnea until I begged the doctor to take it back. By then, the machine was keeping me up because of the noise it would make. by then, I lost the 64 pounds and he was happy about that. I still snore but it is mainly pain that wakes me up these days, not the shortness of breath.

I also take fish oil, niacin, prenatal vitamins, potassium and calcium. I got Mom started on B-12, the kind you put under your tongue to dissolve. She does not have any energy and I bought this for myself a while back but I feel she needs it more than I do (Medicare does not pay for the B-12 shot).

Damn it, I was going to attempt to walk this morning and it is already heating up outside. Someone push me over to the exercise bike and bring me my ball...

Is what she's tired of you spending money and then not using the equipment/services?

BEFORE you start thinking about dieting at all, figure out what you're eating, and how much you're eating of it.

Use this website: http://caloriecount.about.com for at least one whole week and LOG EVERYTHING you put in your mouth.

If it takes you figuring out the ingredients you use to cook, and then weighing out what the portion size is you're eating, DO IT. No excuses. Don't eat anything you haven't logged, period.

It will give you a starting oversight on exactly how much calories you're currently eating, and how you're doing on vitamins, minerals, fat, carbs, and processed sugars. This is information you need to know before you ever think about dieting.

I like myfitnesspal.com and lost 30# with it last year. The mindfulness it brings to your eating is amazingly helpful.

She is the one who got the bike on her Sears card...I got the ball and use it in my room before going to bed. I want to get some kettle bells since all she has weight-wise is 5 lb weights. I have to have something heavier to work with.

Years ago, when I was 235, I used a sit-up roller pad to maintain my muscles. Then Lizard got a hold of with with some liquid wite-out....kids, can't live with them, can't kill them...

ORIGINAL: ShaharThorne

I admit that I am morbidly obese due to eating the wrong things. I am trying to kick processed foods and sugars out but when Mom bakes something, it smells so good and I have to have a piece (especially if it is chocolate cake).

I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I tell my doctor that I do eat it.

Lately, I have been thinking of perhaps doing the Paleo diet. I do eat meat and some veggies but committing myself to a diet that I have no idea on how to work with it is troublesome. I could order the book on eBay but I just paid for Lizard's alcohol server cert so she can get a job at a good restaurant. I gave my South Beach diet book away because it did not do a thing for me except put me to sleep. I am thinking of perhaps ordering a diabetic cookbook though I don't have the disease.

I try to exercise everyday but I have to deal with back spasms if I overdo it. It is where if I go shopping, I use the motorized carts at Walmart. 15 minutes on the concrete floors = spasms = Norco + Flexirel come bedtime.

I try to eliminate pasta but I make a big crockpot of beef tips when I get stew meat on sale. Onion and mushroom soup mix with a half stick of butter (I hate margarine, no flavor) and cook on high for a couple to 3 hours and then you boil the noodles, drain and mix them with the beef tips...another favorite is alfredo with shrimp, which is a monthly staple when my brother's family comes over.

I could use my SNAP benefits but when you can only find a few items in the store, it is hard to maintain any diet.

Has anyone tried the Paleo and is it worth getting the books? I won't be able to get them until after the 2nd when I get paid (alas...the life of disability...) and I think this might help out with the IBS attacks as well. I plan to bring this up with my doctor because I am at a damnable plateau (262, down from 326). The advertising diet systems (WW, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem) is too expensive for my pocketbook.

You've managed to lose over 60 pounds. You're 46 years old.

Are you trying to tell us that you don't know how to lose weight, because obviously you do. Furthermore, you didn't lose the weight by eating fried foods, tater tots, cakes, lemonade pies, fudge, 3 musketeers, pasta, throwing 1/2 stick of butter in the crock pot, donuts and so forth.

You know this. You know what it takes.

I think what you're hoping to hear is that if you try the Paleo diet, you'll have the willpower to resist all the above foods... all the processed high fat sugary stuff.

The Paleo diet works. South Beach works. Sugar busters works. They work if you follow the rules, and donuts and 3 Musketeers and tater tots, and patties, etc are not part of following the rules. The only diet I know that will allow you those foods are the ones where you follow your calorie restricted balanced diet 6 days out of 7, and you get a freebie day. That works for some people who have to have their yummies, for others it just makes the cravings for those foods worse.

You already know what it takes. You already know about exercise. You already know about calories. What you don't know is how to get motivated to do it again.

You know what a good diet is? It's one that you can live with.

Who's buying the chips? The tater tots? The fried fish product?

Stop buying foods that are bad for you. I have only wholesome food in the house, which means I only have to have good will power for those times I go shopping, a total of maybe an hour a week.

It's waaaaaaaay easier to avoid chips if there are no chips, ya know.

I'm confused about the health club, you have a membership, but no way there? Is that right? Your mom won't take you? Why on earth is she buying all this bad food for her morbidly obese daughter? Not to mention the baking.

Does she not understand what the term morbid means in morbidly obese?

Perhaps you two should have a real talk. If she can't be a positive support in your lifestyle change, I got nothing, considering your circumstances.

Right now, I got 4 pizzas and a gallon of ice cream in the freezer. I have no desire to touch those. They are easy for me to resist.

I used to buy the full size 3 Musketeers bars by the 6-pack. I downgraded to the fun size bites so I can have the taste without all the calories. Mom eat those as well, but she gets 2 'bars'...I only get one.

We bake our fish and tater tots. No oil except what is on the cookie sheet so they won't get stuck. Just a quick spray of Pam.

Right now I am debating whether or not to bake a cake. I might put it off until tomorrow when Mom comes home.

At this moment, I have been up for over 7 hours because of pain. I feel the need for a nap but I got a project to do for someone.

I have decided to stop buying frozen meals to sup on. Even though they were 360 calories each, I want to get fresher foods. Too bad that the farmer's market does not take SNAP. I use it at the bread store instead, getting my thin bagels (110 calories) to munch on. I could get carrots but I hate those (baby carrots are really mature carrots cut down to size). I have to find soft foods because I am missing some teeth and it feels like I might have to have another one pulled out (someone just bring the Amaretto and pliers).

I would do pickles but you have to watch me and my 4yo niece fight over them. She is a mean one if someone takes her pickles.

Tater tots are all empty calories, as is most of the already prepared food you buy. Even if it's marketed as 'healthy.' That is a marketing ploy.

Learn how to shop and cook your own healthy food. Doing that is a commitment to your own good health and future well being. You know this. I've seen your posts. You're a smart lady. Be smart for yourself.

I know you are in pain, and I know how hard it is to function when that is ruling your life. You dig yourself out of that hole one step at a time.

So back to my original suggestion. Can you fix breakfast? Nice healthy oatmeal with fruit or raisins and skim milk. It's easy, no prep. It's cheap if you make your own oatmeal or granola (please don't buy instant packets. You only save yourself 2 mins of prep time.)

If you want my granola recipe, just ask.

I do fix myself oatmeal, about 3 times a week if I can remember to eat. I can't stand eating when I first get up. Mom does the instant oatmeal for herself. I was cooking for her when she broke her leg and had to keep it propped up. Now she is out of the walking boot and starts PT on Tuesday.

I used to make my own trail mix with unsalted pecans years ago. Since the drought, the price for the nuts has gone up.

When we go out to eat, it is usually IHOP. I order a decent meal and instead of pancakes, I request the fruit bowl. I'll eat the apple, honeydew melon and whatever else is in it (it has been a few months since we went).

3 cups oatmeal

1 cup nuts or other filler, like flax seed, sesame seed, oat groats, what ever floats your boat

1/2 cups hot water into which 1/4 vegetable and 1/4 sweetener has been added

(I use sugar free honey, but honey, sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses anything like that can be used.)

Mix the oatmeal with the nuts, then add the water mixture. Put in one layer on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with oil. Brown in a slow 250 degree over from about 15 minutes, turn as well as you can, and brown another 15 minutes. You may need to adjust this time, dependent on your oven. It should be lightly browned, and a bit clumpy.

After it's cooled you can add raisins, dried cranberries or other fruit.

If the mixture is not sweet enough or chewy enough for your taste, add more oil or sweetener and less water. In other words, the total is 1 cup.

Enjoy!

Sugarfree honey?

Do you mean vegetable oil?

Oh yeah sorry vegetable oil, like Safflower or peanut.

I would like to try agave nectar in this recipe, but haven't done it yet. I use sugar free imitation honey in my tea, and use it for some cooking recipes, this is one. Obviously, it's not really honey.

ETA: And I add cinnamon as well.
