It's the golden age of television. Which critically acclaimed show would you vote #1?

I wouldn't know if it's the best show on television but Game of Thrones is my guilty pleasure. That probably has a bit to do with Jon Snow.

Don't watch any of those shows, even though they are broadcast here in the UK. None of them really appeals to me.

Now, I'm hooked on Law and Order UK and Top Gear. THAT is quality television!

If it's not "Law & Order", "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", METS, JETS, or All Blacks, I can't be arsed to sit in front of the TV

ETA: Eh "N.C.I.S." is okay, too

Of the ones you have listed, I'd probably say that Walking Dead is My favorite of the selections, but not My favorite overall. (I couldn't believe I was the only one catching parts of the Walking Dead marathon over the extended July Fourth weekend.)

My tv watching has gone up dramatically since being in Alaska. USA network is on more than anything else which means a lot of SVU, NCIS, Suits, Burn Notice, and all of the others. They are usually on in the background. However, the show that I actually sit in front of the tv to watch, believe it or not, is Monday Night Raw. Yes, I know it's silly and it certainly doesn't show My intellectual side, but it's on of the funniest things on television.

I enjoyed Homeland but too bad you omitted Boss which stars Kelsey Grammer. Also a shout out for The Americans.

Minow gave that speech in 1961. Much has changed since he voiced that elitest crap. Many excellent dramas and performances as well as real life events starting with the assassination of the President just six months later. Not to have to mention the later impact of television on our view of the War in Vietnam and other historical events that followed. What other media can bring us the immediacy of events like televison?

Perhaps I should have been more specific in what I referred to as mindless crap. I agree about news events such as the Kennedy assassination, Viet Nam, and even the moonlanding and more. A good documentary or many of the programs on PBS, History, and Discovery. Those are worth seeing. However, what is being passed off as entertainment or the all of the so called "reality" shows....please spare me.....that's the mindless crap.

Although I cancelled cable two months ago and haven't bothered to hook up the free TV antenna yet, I really started to like The Big Bang Theory. Yes, I know that at it's roots is just another formula sitcom, but I enjoyed it. NCIS, too, and occasionally some of the offerings from Discovery/History/A&E. There is no "one" best show, only the one that garners the most eyeballs in a given timeslot. What I like somebody else loathes, and vice versa.

Another vote for Big Bang. I don't have cable so we are watching it on Netflix. When we catch up (we're on Season 5) we're going to watch Mad Men.

I liked Breaking Bad quite a bit. I started Boardwalk Empire in its second season and never really liked it. I watched a few episodes of Homeland and didn't like the main character, so dropped it. I haven't seen any of the other shows listed.

I'm through season 4 of Sons of Anarchy and like that quite a bit. I got that and Breaking Bad from the library.

I used to LOVE the History Channel, back when they actually had history programs on it. Unfortunately, there's pretty much nothing more than "reality" (Please note the quotation marks) crap.

I remember, back when the History Channel was relevant, people used to complain that their "H" bug stood for "Hitler". It's true. A lot of that stuff was about WWII but to me, that was preferable to "Pawn Stars" and "Gator Boys" and the rest of the crap fare that's available, now.

I was even dumb enough to pay for H2, after a free weekend. The weekend was great but even they're starting to get away from actual history stuff.

Ya know, I could understand something like a dramatization of a historical event. One of these channels has something called "Hatfields & McCoys" (or something like that). I caught some of it, this weekend. It's not bad and it least it has more connection to history than someone bringing some piece of crap they found in their attic to a store and haggling price.

Good luck,

Ted Turner

That's why I cancelled cable. I used to love the WWII documentaries, ancient history, and the UFO shows they had. I can't wait until the reality show craze dies down and they go back to basics. But I doubt that'll happen, so I am just going to get the DVDs of the shows I like and watch those.

When I feel like watching TV, that is. I have too many real world problems to deal with to waste time sitting on my fat ass zoning out to the tube. Another big reason I cancelled cable is the fact that, why the hell should I pay for something just to have to watch commercials? I'll just wait until I'm healing up from my next operation before I even bother plugging it in again.

It is easy to forget True Blood, since they have butchered the original story line.

The Good Wife is the only show that might be considered a part of the golden age, i.e. critically acclaimed. If you feel otherwise, the poll has the write in candidate available. The best dramas, however, are mostly carried on cable.

------

Thanks for the responses. It's good to get a sense of what others are watching.

We recently started watching HOMELAND. Its first two seasons are available ON DEMAND. I avoided this when it came out b/c I thought it might be a 24 clone. Anyway, its just an expertly crafted story built around two top actors, Claire Danes and Damien Lewis. Claire Danes is just unbelievably good. I did not want to accept Damien Lewis in another role after Band of Brothers, but he's very strong in Homeland -- portraying layers of anger, pain, conflicting loyalties, betrayal, loss, and other elements related to his hyper-complicated character. Mandy Patkin is also compelling.

My vote would be for GoT. Although one could argue it's lowbrow (sex, violence, good v. evil), its production values and casting are off the charts. It's theme is self interest and self preservation mixed against the dangers of delusional thinking (Stanis, Geoffry) or idealism (The Starks.) Arguably Daenerys Targaryen treads best between these two dangers -- while still coming out ahead.

Other top shows from the past: The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and The Wire left behind a television hole upon their cancellation --- but the second generation behind them listed above is quite strong and is carried on a wider variety of Networks. HBO is no longer king.

I have not seen THE WALKING DEAD or the GOOD WIFE, but each is critically acclaimed.

BREAKING BAD is very good, but it is difficult to watch b/c it explores high functioning but very dysfunctional characters who tread close to the abyss.
