Are they more intelligent or just tend to be better educated?

High IQ correlates to a higher level of academic achievement so it is likely impossible to correct for educational attainment.

In this case, however, I am not sure if I can really disagree. After all, were talking about people who believe that an invisible man lives in the sky.... and is obsessing over what we do with our genitalia.

The article doesn't address what I'd consider a key question: How did the authors define and measure intelligence?

some people just believe what they are told, others like to delve a little deeper, is that a measure of intelligence?

Status: offline 		Intelligence, without common sense, is as much use as a fart in a phone box. I had a friend who was a scientist involved in missile research, I took him fishing and he couldnt grasp the basics of using a sliding float (which allows you to fish at deep levels). The problem was it wasn`t what he had been trained in.

So basically bright as a button in some respects and dumber than me in others. Generally speaking I havent found overly religious people to be less intelligent than anyone else.

Status: offline 		I do believe religion is first passed from parent to child...But in time all question the existence of God and must reconcile their beliefs with the reality of life. The truly intelligent do not reject religion as impossible and perhaps dig deeper into the why of our existence rather than stop at the nuts and bolts of our physiology. I think this is a mark of a more complicated mind...even a more artistic romantic one.

I do however believe economic standing is a measure of intelligence but only through the lack of education. Those of poor economic standing tend to struggle more with where the next meal is coming from and lean on the existence of God to save them from their suffering and offer hope. This means the poor struggling members of the world society will do poorly on intelligence tests and believe in God. But the intelligence score is more an indicator of a poor education then innate intelligence.

And as we know there are many more poor than affluent in this world.

The study in question looked at a bunch of studies. I'm going to assume most if not all were concerned with people with high IQ's.

Status: offline 		I'm curious if there are any studies done on countries that are predominantly atheist, and whether they would show similar results.

Perhaps the correlation isn't between atheism and intelligence but rather between going against social norms and intelligence.

Of course some of them are. Does that make it right somehow? There are assholes in every group. When I see an exceptionally condescending one, I point it out. If you feel the need to swoop in to defend them by crying "but they did it too" I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

"exceptionally condescending" yet you failed to address the post stating "the truly intelligent do not reject religion as impossible" ?

Seems to me most of what you call "exceptionally condescending" is anything that knocks the Catholic Church or Republicans.
