In what seems to me to be a very favorable offering, wikipedia lists his major legislative accomplishment as a proposed "financial reform legislation amendment " which never became law.
They also note rude behavior during a speech by M McConnell, behavior for which he had the grace to apologize.
If by "good job" you mean keeping his head down and not being a clown, I agree.

He's a junior Senator in a Senate where very little is getting done and seniority still matters a great deal. Still I'm pleased that he has his staff actually serving the people of the state of Minnesota and he is not spending his Sundays pontificating on the bullshit subject of the day with McCain.

He Lied. Whatever he told you, he lied! I do not go around stealing the peas off of people's dinner plates! Why would I do such a thing?! I don't know who did it but it wasn't me! Personally, I think it was Peter Dinklage, who was seated much closer to Al than I was. Plus, Dinklage looks like the kind of guy who would steal peas.

On the other hand, I presume that Al comes down on the side of evolution on this particular debate (just to keep things on topic here), so he can't be all bad... but I still don't like him.

It's worth asking who benefits from imbeciles wrecking your education system.
Back in the '50s, it was the Russians. These days, it seems to be a fair chunk of south east Asia who are profitting from the American school system treating fairy stories and science as being interchangeable. Who's profiting from stem cell research now?

I'd say that the democrats and republicans most directly benefit from this. It is way easier to pull the wool over people's eyes when they are ignorant.

I'm kind of curious why nobody is up in arms over history and poli-sci texts which, to my mind, are substantially more important to correct than biology texts.

Because if you say that Washington didn't chop down a cherry tree, and that Lincoln had no intentions of freeing slaves, but was a lawyer who was a minion of the railroad landgrabbing trusts, America would unravel very quickly.

When it comes to this issue I believe you are wrong to label the board of education elected officials as right-wing. I'll bet a good majority of the Hispanic population, often referred to as left-wing, voted for these officials, or those that appointed them, and agree with their views on textbooks.

I really do not see this silly petition making any difference with the publishers. All they will care about is the money, and that is all they should care about. It is up to the people of the state to decide what is in their text books even if we don't like it.

And I don't like it... I think science and observable facts belong in education and religion belongs in the hearts and minds and churches.

Al Frankin doing his job.

"We are entitled to our own opinions, but are not entitled to our own facts". Would you have had the colletedness much less the balls to stand up and say that? Would you have become distracted when so directed or could you stay on point as Al did? Admittedly, the Senator was discussing taxes, and (OMG!) health care, but his point about what truth isn't belongs in this discussion also.

Hat tip to Kalikshama for pointing out this particular scale for me to toss my penny on. Did and done. All that is left to do is unsubscribe.

The funny part is, these religiwakos probably actually really believe they are helping kids by getting between them and the real world. It's totally sad, but it's still funny. Jerry Lewis wouldn't be condemned to the telethon for life if he had made fun of these guys. And what a difference that would have made in The Real World.

Oh but you are wrong here...there are no just facts...only opinions of what the facts mean. And those opinions have every right to be represented in a democratic society.

mnottertail -> RE: Don't let right-wing Texans put debunked pseudoscience in science textbooks used by millions (8/15/2013 2:11:09 PM)

spin isnt even opinion, and it certainly is not factual.

kdsub -> RE: Don't let right-wing Texans put debunked pseudoscience in science textbooks used by millions (8/15/2013 2:23:44 PM)

No spin Ron... I am talking reality. The issue of truth as been talked about many times on these boards and by now it should be obvious that truth is different depending on the mind seeing it...This goes for science and the facts of nature.

The majority does count...and the majority in Texas sees the truth and facts different than you or I. Do they have the right, in a democracy, to determine what is taught in their schools? I believe they do and the changes have to come from the people not silly petitions to text book publishers.

Butch

mnottertail -> RE: Don't let right-wing Texans put debunked pseudoscience in science textbooks used by millions (8/15/2013 2:50:47 PM)

truth as the mind sees it is not fact.

Look, the fuckin guy out and out and knowingly lied, period.

A good majority of the Hispanic population is Catholic and votes the way their priest tells them to.

It's a 15 member board and is, at present, controlled by some scientifically illiterate RW types.

I really don't know how to comment this without getting banned, this is the biggest bullshit I ever heard, if someone has not the education or the intelligence to understand one thing this doesn't mean it's wrong, not even opinionable. If the majority of adults in texas are ingnorant as cows doesn't mean they can damage the next generation, too. There is no way that a sofistic idea of truth can be applied to science, truth is one can be unknown but when proved what you belive is worth nothing.

And by the way catholic religion officially accept evolution as a fact.

Hey a new record for you and me...glad I could help... But despite your outrage... the adults and legal voters DO have the right...even if wrong. And YOU certainly have no right to mandate they pay attention to you...or me for that matter.

no way, they are violating the trust relationship that their position helping conmans to steal money from the education system and from the families that have school age children, as I suppose who will wrote this proven to be lies on the books earn a paycheck, in order to gain more political support to politician endorsed them.
This is a fraud not a democratic process.

kdsub -> RE: Don't let right-wing Texans put debunked pseudoscience in science textbooks used by millions (8/15/2013 3:44:18 PM)

I get a kick out of people like you that think a democracy is only a democracy if others agree with you. Will they don't agree with you and if they are within their legal rights to demand a change to the text books then they have a right to do it. To deny this right would be against the Constitution. Unless you want us to turn into Egypt then the majority will rule...so get over it or join the revolution.

As I taught biology at a Catholic HS, I can vouch for that. However, the rank and file frequently prefers to remain ignorant.

So for you also the election of a state attorney that has no degree in law would be fine? And once elected he could decide to never persecute his political friends and this would also be fine?
