Personally, I find it hilarious how most of those who consider themselves left of center have yet to come out against this on this thread.

*laughs* It took me this far into it just try to to understand what the problem is. Seems to me we have a comedian doing political comedy. I don't honestly understand what the problem is.

Well he is Irish so he could be kelly green.

People are outraged over this- but ok with drones killing people, and Social Security being cut. Obama is taking food off the table of seniors.

The problem is that we have elements of the rightist massive in here whining like schoolgirls because the Kenyan told the liberal media conspiracy to fire the guy and see that he never worked as a Rodeo clown again.
While the accounts of the affair that have been posted make it look very unlikely that the Kenyan had anything to do with this, that isn't stopping the whiners throwing tantrums about how thin skinned the Kenyan is, and how the "Obamabots" will support any abuse or maliciousness that harms some poor oppressed right leaning white guy. Apparently this rodeo clown getting fired is just as terrible a threat to the constitution as somebody following the President about with an umbrella, or him putting his feet on a desk in the white house.
So no: not really a problem at all, outside of neocon fantasy island.

You don't see the NAACP demanding federal charges against him as a slight overreaction?

Moonhead -> RE: Freaking out over a clown??? (8/19/2013 4:36:57 PM)

Probably, but no more so than some of the crap that's been spouted about it in here. If the charges actually happen, then that would be a problem, but so long as they're all talk, who cares?

(ETA: I actually feel a little sorry for them over this crap. It must be terrible to have to make a statement about this sort of ridiculous, trivial bullshit purely because people have been complaining about something being racist in the media.)

Most on the right dont even bother to check facts. The NAACP hasnt demanded anything, one member has given a Statement of HER view on disrespecting the President, whatever race or colour he may be.

Ratliff says that its an outrage that taxpayer dollars were used to disrespect the president.

Wrong, as usual, the NAACP asked Holder to investigate for federal charges.
Haven't heard of him following up maybe he has to deliver guns to Mexico.

Still missing the gist of Ratliffs actual statement then.

I surely do. But the NAACP may blather on about whatever they wish to. I won't get too wound up until some federal prosecutor takes up the case.

Lucylastic -> RE: Freaking out over a clown??? (8/19/2013 5:01:17 PM)

President of the Missouri chapter of the NAACP Mary Ratliff claimed in a radio interview Thursday that the Obama mask-donning rodeo clown committed a hate crime, CBS St. Louis reports.

I think that a hate crime occurred,” Mary Ratliff said to KXNT Radio. “I think a hate crime occurs when you use a person’s race to depict who they are and to make degrading comments, gestures, et cetera, against them.”

Ratliff’s definition stands in stark contrast to the actual federal hate crimes statue, which would require rodeo clown Tuffy Gessling to “willfully cause bodily injury” to President Barack Obama with “fire, a firearm, a dangerous weapon, or an explosive or incendiary device.”

Ratliff did not indicate if Gessling had attempted to attack the president with fire or other weaponry, but did say the Secret Service should investigate the matter nonetheless.

“When taxpayer money is utilized to discredit and be disrespectful to our president, whether he be black, white, Hispanic, Latina … it is an outrage,” she continued.

Ratliff said she believes the “mean” rodeo act requires that the Department of Justice dedicate more taxpayer dollars into investigating Gessling’s feelings about Obama.

“With all of the hateful and mean things that are happening and happened in Missouri here at the rodeo, we believe that the Justice Department should look into the discriminatory practices against our sitting African-American president,” Ratliff said. “In this country, discrimination is still illegal.

I dont see "demand", I see a lot of "I believe", and "I think", But the NAACP as a body has not demanded ANYTHING of the kind.
She may be the chapter president, but I doubt the justice department has had ANY demand, in fact there is ZERO mention of it anywhere I could find.

This is absolutely stunning and ridiculous. It was not a hate crime.

Moonhead -> RE: Freaking out over a clown??? (8/19/2013 5:08:41 PM)

That's a bit embarrassing: I should have looked into the NAACP thing myself before saying how irritating for them being expected to take nonsense like this seriously must be...

MarieDomina -> RE: Freaking out over a clown??? (8/19/2013 5:20:09 PM)

I think it's absolutely ridiculous of any member of the NAACP to call for this incident to be investigated as a hate crime or any sort of crime. It is a waste of time and energy.

From what I saw of this incident there was a politician in attendance of the fair that day and he is a Republican and he was absolutely outraged at what was taking place and he stated it reminded him of a Klan rally. I guess he should know because he was in actual attendance. He condemned this kind of behavior in disgust. I watched the actual interview he gave in regard to this incident.

I wish I could remember his name but I do not. He said it was offensive how the announcer kept whooping the crowd into a frenzy and saying disparaging things about The President Of The United States. I take it he knows what he is talking about because he was actually there. So I am going to take his word for it in regard to how things went down.

The bottom line is, some people found the display highly offensive and some do not. Now as far as the NAACP and the DOJ stepping in I highly doubt that will happen.

Well, yes for this thread and for the right wing howling in other
places that would be if not the entire problem a big portion of it.
Well stated as always btw. And there aren't going to be any
federal charges brought about.

I'm unclear on what most of those who consider themselves
left of center didn't come out about on this thread. The politicians
making public statements that condemned what went on?
After the video was put out and news outlets around the world
picked it up I imagine they felt they had to. Bad pr, not good for
business. And politicians from both parties condemned it.
When your redneck kinfolks show their ass at a party people
with manners usually feel the need to apologize and disassociate
themselves. The man being banned from fairs forever? I said
that seemed extreme and I know I'm left of center. If other left
leaners don't think that I understand and respect that. If the issue
is did CNN send its big Obamabots out to stir up the smaller
Obamabots Moon just addressed that quite pithily. I focused in on
another aspect in my post. I haven't watched or seen anything
about this story on CNN or any other network because I haven't
watched CNN or any other tv news since the story broke. But I
have no knowledge that CNN broke the story first. And if they did
the rights media has returned volley with orgasmic rapture.
That's kinda how the 24 hour media culture works. Talking heads
have to have something to talk about. It's a I'll scratch your back
if you scratch mine kind of business.

A rodeo clown act isn't really isn't the same thing as a political
comedian. Most people don't go to the rodeo for the clown not
alone anyway. He's just a small part of the show. A person who
goes to a see a comedian be it a political one or one who works
blue makes that choice and is prepared for it. And this act seems
to have lapped up against shores other than political ones. Racism
is beyond the political. That a fair goer could take their family to
the rodeo with the reasonable expectation that the audience isn't
going to get whipped up in such a manner that the fair goer doesn't
become anxious that things might turn ugly for him and his family
isn't odd. He's not just being uptight or a party pooper.

I realize there are white Americans who have led sheltered lives.
They've never seen shitkicker bigots up close and personal.
They are naive about things like race baiting. They have a vague
grasp on the history of race relations in the US. So since they don't
know much about it, it doubtfully exists. Leasts ways not like the
whingers and the whiners carry on about it. But those of us who have
seen it, seen how ugly and scary it is aren't laughing. Cause it ain't
funny. Underneath all the noise on TV and the Internet is a sad story.
A story that is like a Rorschach test for the people who hear it and
read about it. Read em' and weep.
