Awww. Did some precious little rationalizations about those two get stepped on, Polite?

Good.

I understand the rationale, Peon. I'm asking if it's true. Taking gun ownership rates as a proxy for the gun laws and availability of guns in a society, international comparisions find no clear correlation with homicide rates. Countries differ and, more to the point, their cultures and sub-cultural mixes differ.

Growing up, my friends and I had access to firearms. From age 12 onward I had a .22 mounted on the wall of my bedroom. Yes we got pissed at people sometimes. But we never shot anybody, and nobody ever had to worry that we might. That was the culture I grew up in.

So when people say that guns are the problem, or that their availability is the problem, I know they're not talking about my culture. And when their eyes light up with a way to "fix" it, I am singularly unimpressed and much inclined to prefer them leaving it alone.

K.

Well we could spend time working on that, but it seems most would rather spend time trying to tie it to gun control.

You mean like tying him to a truck and dragging him down the road or just beating him to death with baseball bats. That's what a group of kids did here when they got bored.

When I get bored I go to message boards and talk to idiots who want to ban guns.

@zonie "I think gun control would probably gain more support in this country if its advocates would be willing to tie it in with some truly tough measures against crime."

We already spend more money on prisons and prisoners than we do on education, our prisons are full, and we now contract prisons to private corporations. How do we toughen laws, and deal with the numbers when we have overcrowded, understaffed, and expensive prisons as is? What laws would you toughen up? More mandatory minimums? Tougher gun laws? More time for less heinous crimes? Install an express lane for lethal injections and electric chairs?....Not sure I understand what else we could do? We can't outlaw guns, hell we can't even get a list of gun owners, and the present system is a failure, and we already add time for crimes committed with guns, where would you start?

A murder would have been committed by these teens regardless of means. A gun doesn't make people kill someone because they are bored. Underlying all these crimes and intentional murders is a mindset that it's okay to kill someone else, regardless of reasoning. For someone to get to the point to think that killing someone is okay because you are bored, is scary. How anyone could consider that to be true is beyond me.

As I said before:
I think we should ban amoral fuckwits. That seems to be a more common denominator in murders, regardless of method.

I agree.

We do know that they are evil, i.e. without a conscience. And since such a phenotype is inherited, the best thing to do is to put them and their male relatives in a monastery to ensure that they do not reproduce their genotypes.

Does it make no sense at all that an angry and aggressive person who's brought up seeing death inflicted frequently, easily and 'glamorously' on the screen by firearms, who sees a gun shop every time he goes out, might be much more likely to have that aggression moulded into a murderous desire?

No. The psychology that is capable of murder, because it lacks a conscience, already exists. And - however horrendous - it is good when it manifests, because that is a certain sign that such a person ought not to reproduce his alleles.

'Desires change according to the means of achieving them'. This is a principle that's as old as psychology itself. Yet the principle seems to have no place in debates about the availability of guns. When it comes to guns, the desire comes first, the deed follows from the desire, and that is 'self-evidently' that. It seems bizarre to me.

I disagree. Asserting that someone with a murderous mind can learn to have a conscience is just as wrong as asserting that a homosexual can learn to be not a homosexual, or that a cow can learn to be a bat or a fish. People and cows are the way they are born.

*my bold

In a thread dredging for this month's title as the collection of the dumbest posts, this stands out.
If there is ANYTHING we know about conscience, it's that it isn't 'inherited' (trying to bring back the late lamented Phrenology?) And 'phenotype' is hardly behavior. Genetics as behaviorally deterministic died early in the 20th century. It's Mothers asking 5 yr olds and under, "How would that make You feel?" hundreds of times that creates empathy and a conscience, reinforced by a community of older empathic and socially cohesive people, that make for ethical and moral humans.
I guess if you hate Blacks already, or 'poor White Trash' (or Muslims or whatever), it's simpler to just label the families of all miscreants, ship them off and go back to patting yourself on the back for not being quite as evil? Which has some appearance of rough validity, families providing both the genes and the environment. The kicker is all the families with a single criminal/sociopath in a clan of highly embarrassed citizens.

On the contrary, it is perceptive: the thugs in boths groups all lacked a conscience. (For clarification: That is an inherent function in the brains and minds of some people that distinguishes between right and wrong, good and evil, truth and false.)

Being a supergenius, I am proud to have posted the dumbest post.

That said, I notice that you talk like someone who does not have the foggiest idea what a conscience is. Ever hear someone who was born deaf talk about the song of the nightingale, or someone who was born blind talk about the splendour of the blue sky? They do not have the foggiest idea either.
