What I'm trying to get at is that I wish we could reach a point where, to borrow from Dickens, "men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." That wouldn't solve the very real challenge of designing a safety net that provided needed, focused help without snaring generations in dependency. But I think some goodwill and humility would help us better address this thorny topic. I know: typical starry-eyed liberal!

A starry-eyed liberal, indeed, DC, but not so typical at all.

I haven't read Dickens in 30-ish years, but I have to wonder what he might make of the modern inner city culture, that is sprouting across our smaller cities and towns.

I see in my local news that 4 people were shot in the garage of a house, about 1:30 this morning - 1 dead. Just gang shit. No reason for it. They recently extended the reward for info on the murder of an Army vet - 3 tours in Iraqistan, killed sitting at the wheel of his car in front of his brother's house. Looks like it happened without any sort of verbal exchange or warning at all. Maybe all these stories could go into the Bored in Oklahoma thread. Maybe the stories there should be here.

They have houses, and full stomachs, television, internet, twittering smartphones, but the most dangerous thing they seem to have is too much time on their hands.

The cycle has to be broken.

Weapons aside, he'd likely find it all too familiar.
