As a related question: Why do you suppose people get pissy when you call them on their painfully obvious lies? I.e., "Wow, you sure don't look 38." "So how many pounds ago were all the photos I've seen of you taken?" (No, I don't actually put it that way. I do have manners.) I suppose it's ridiculous to expect people who lack integrity to own up to their actions.

People don't always look their age though. I tend to look quite a bit younger than I actually am ... So much so that at one point I actually had photos of myself holding a piece of paper with my screen name and the date to prove that I wasn't using old pics. Of course, then I'd go from being accused of lying about my pics to lying about my age. Either way, it gets annoying to be called a liar by random strangers on the interwebs who somehow think I should be grateful for their unsolicited commentary on my looks.

I can imagine it does get tiring to get messages like calling you a liar.

I really only feel like I have enough invested to have that particular conversation if we've actually met. I'll give the benefit of the doubt in terms of photos and such until we do meet. Basically anything can be ginned up with the right software, and I think that you have to have some amount of faith that people are being straight with you. If someone's just a profile that looks fake to me, I'm much more likely to just pass on messaging them than to tell them that I think they're faking something.

I'm 57. I can attract women in their 40s and 50s easily. The only way your statement makes any sense is if they're chasing women in their 20s and 30s.

Prior to turning 30, I would get a lot of emails from men in their 30s, 40s and early 50s. Now that I'm over 30, most of my emails come from men in their late 50's, 60's and early 70's. Its a really strange trend, imo because in real life I'm never approached by men who are that much older than me.

I have been on CM for 10 years. There is a man that has been on here that same exact amount of time. When I started CM, he was 9 years older than me, now he is a year younger, according to his profile. I'm sorry but he should be able to figure out that this site doesn't auto update in the 10 years he has been on here.

At 99, which has always been my stated age on cm, I'm not getting any younger.

I always put 99 because I generally don't look for anyone on here.
I'm not worried about what people think of my age, but I won't write that I am younger.
If I want to tell someone my age I generally do. But lying is not going to happen.
most of the time when someone comments that I have 99 is my age they realize the fact that it's really a tongue in cheek joke, and that I am NOT 99.
I do however write 99 so that no one finds me when they are searching for somebody within a particular age range.
I am generally here just to speak on the forum.

The thing that people don't realize is that this isn't even a bad thing. Congratulations, you have successfully weeded out a ton of men in their 30s and 40s who aren't worth your time. Yes, it means you're getting emails from men in their 60s and 70s that you have no interest in, but isn't it a lot better to get emails from guys you know right away you're not interested in than guys who you shouldn't be interested in that might trick you into being interested in them and wasting a lot of your time?

Would you really want to lie about your age and say you're 29 in order to get the emails from all those worthless guys when it will turn off the guys who are interested in you that are actually worthwhile when they inevitably find out?

Personally, I would have a very strong tendency to drop anyone when I discover that they've lied about their age in their profile or their height or their body or ANYTHING. Misleading pictures are the same, although they're even more ridiculously common than lying about one's age. Does not getting as much attention or getting negative attention from idiots on the Internet really make you feel that bad about yourself? It's a giant red flag and a rather large display of your insecurity. Is that really what you want someone's first impression of you to be? Insecurity about X?

Please note that all of my "yous" in this post are directed at people in general and not at you specifically, delirium.

Yeah, "99" isn't really a lie, it's simply a statement that you don't give a damn what anyone thinks your age is.

I agree with your principles about dropping anyone who lies about anything in their profile, in theory. In practice, almost all men lie about something in their profiles. I don't search for women, so I can't speak first hand about whether most women lie about something too. And from what I've read the lying happens as much on vanilla dating sites as on kink ones. I guess in practice I gauge for myself the severity of the lie (saying they're single if they're married versus saying they are 2 inches taller than they are). But I do agree that a lie is a lie.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is exactly right! I don't know if the reason they've given me for their lie is the real reason; it's just what they've told me.

Correct. That's exactly what they're doing. And when it doesn't work, they convince themselves they look young for their age and shave 5, 10, 15 years off on their profile.

Ha! After I turned 40 I got an avalanche of these on OKCupid from kids in their teens and 20s. I was out as kinky and they think that's hawt. I put a line in my profile directing that demographic to the nearest TNG group.

I did hook up with a 27 yo that I met here on CM - I called him my Rhodes Scholar Exception

More men lie about their height.
6'1 online turns out to be 5'9 in real life.

Oh and....I'm only 22.
Or at least I was 23 years ago.
Fuck. That was painful to write.

It's a funny thing, I thought only women lied about their age, but in the last year I must have had at least 20 men lie directly to me about their age. Also, by photographs that men publish of themself, I can see that there is a lot of dishonesty going on regarding age. Why is this?

With multiple BDSM websites, and people often sticking with the same user names that they are known by, it's very easy to compare one profile against another - something which I routinely do if I am being contacted by a potential Dom.

One Dom was lying by at least 15 years! Others routinely lie 6-7 years, anything up to 5 years is commonplace. Why bother to lie about something so petty?

I understand that some websites don't update your age automatically, but if you only joined 2 years ago, then how can it be 5 years out? Lol.

The common wisdom is that men grow better with age and that women enjoy the company of an older man. Is this no longer the case? Are men now under pressure to fake youthfulness to be considered attractive? I often hear older women complain that men their age are only interested in younger women. But are younger women becoming increasingly willing to select for younger men, pushing older men out of the dating loop too? And will older men become more and more dishonest about their age as time goes on, or begin dating more within their age range, thus freeing themselves of the pressure to lie?

And finally, why would a heavily wrinkled person with veiny hands ever think they could pass themselves off as a 38 year old? You can't always tell whether someone is married, or cheating, whether they're being honest about their job or where they live, but somebody's age is pretty much written all over them. So why lie?

Vanity (you can be anything online, even ten or twenty years younger)

Fantasy (when someone's main reason for being here is cybering, why not be young or female or from a more romantic/interesting country...)

Fear (lots of competition, and many folks set their search parameters by age)

Carelessness (too busy enjoying the site to bother with updating their age)

People misrepresenting themselves...yeah, that sucks. Even when someone does not deliberately misrepresent themselves, sometimes photos cannot keep up with current events in someone's life that can drastically alter their appearance.

My submissive boyfriend didn't lie about his age, he's ten years older than I am. But our first meetup threw me because his picture looked like a cuddly teddy bear...it had been taken just a few months before...and by the time I met him he was unhealthy looking, almost gaunt from overwork and illness. I have to admit to being poleaxed when I saw him, my first thought was "OMG, you poor baby (man/submissive)!"

I came here on my 39th birthday and I'm 49 right now going on 50. I never saw the point in saying/lying that I was 30, weight proportionate, and in perfect health. I am who I am and if folks aren't going to like me...I'd rather know before I've wasted enough time to form an attachment.

Not really. I have seen tons of people who look MUCH older than they actually are due to a hard life, drinking, smoking, eating incorrectly, genes, etc...

Most people who run across me think I'm in my early 20's....I'm 41.

So no, not true.

I admit there have been many times where I have been tempted to lie about my age to people simply because I get so very tired of telling them I'm 41 when they think I'm 22.

I told Master I'm just going to not correct them for now on. Let them think what they want.
