So the slave says, "you have been dissin' 50 Shades of Grey but you never read it. Do you want to read it?" I said "sure, get a copy and read it to me." When the book arrived, I set my mind to view it as a book, not a BDSM anthem. I went in with an open mind. The slave was chained to the wall, I had a nice cup of ny favorite tea and the mood was perfect for reading. The slave read about 10 pages into the Harlequin romance style novel before this happened:

I snatched the book from her hands, took it by the outer edge and paddled her ass with it until it turned pink. Yuppers, that 50 Shades of Grey makes a nice paddle alright. So there is some redeeming BDSM value in it after all . . . but as a book worth reading, I am not so sure.

Seriously though, the plot with a quivery woman meeting a powerful and wealthy man just didn't appeal to my interest. Should I have the slave keep reading it to me? Is there a good book in it despite any BDSM inaccuracies? I have read good scifi books that were based on bad science and was able to enjoy the story because the writing was good. But usually, the author does something to intrigue the reading audience in the opening. Something to bait the readers into wanting to know what comes next. That hasn't happened yet in 50 Shades. Will it ever happen?

Does the book get better or does it hold to the Harlequin romance formula?

DON'T DO IT!!!

The book is truly awful. Really, we have a screwed up man who thinks he's dominant, but is pussy-whipped by this female who allows him to smack her about 3 times before she falls apart and has a strop (despite her asking him to do it to her), but then in a later 'session' she safewords when he makes her orgasm. I mean...WTevelovingF????!!!!

At one point he kneels at her feet and begs her for...something, I can't remember. It just made me feel so *dirty* inside.

I won't apologise to anyone for giving a spoiler, because it's a book no-one should ever read. It's shite from beginning to end, and I believe the author should be tied to a stake somewhere in a town centre and the general public should be able to pelt copies of her book at her miserable hide.

I fuckin' hate that book!

The writing is awful. I didn't buy it, but tried to read it on the fanfic website where it was first written (I no longer have the website, but someone in my reading forum posted it, so I gave it a try). Granted, that was an unedited version, but the writing was so bad, I couldn't get past what must have been the first couple pages. Truly awful. Have no idea how bad the plot might be, couldn't get past the writing.

I think you should sit back with a good cigar and a snifter of brandy (or single malt), have her keep reading it and every time it turns to crap, paddle her ass with the book again.

This thread is becoming great. Shall we take a poll on how many offer up the knee-jerk reaction and how many read the post?

It's a horrible book. Not only because of the terrible writing/Harlequin style the book has, but because of the reason BDSM is in the book at all.
It's because Christian Gray was abused as a child, thus creating his desire for "abusing" women. bleh.

I stick to my original idea - don't risk damaging the book by smacking a masochist with it - throw it at the author!

Have her read you "Diary of a Submissive" by Sophie Morgan. It is an autobiography..the author is more into the S&M side of things then the D/s thing so I would say the title is a misnomer but I think that the book would never have been published if not for the 50 Shades trilogy.

To me that is one benefit to the trilogy. Many books that big publishers would never have touched 10 years ago are now available... Hey, I LOVE romance novels then throw in a guy who likes to spank, control, whip a woman and a heroine who knows how much fun that truly is!!!

Harlequin.

As always, I encourage people curious about this book to read the original FREE fanfiction, which is more fun to read with the Twilight characters Edward and Isabella (etc) instead of Christian Grey and Anastasia: http://nerdhurdles.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/master-of-the-universe-inc-outtakes-by-snowqueens-icedragon-complete.pdf

[my] Master's opinion of the book:

"Whoever wrote it has no clue about how to touch a woman."

Video tape getting spanked by the book with the words "This is all the series is good for". Pelt the books back at the author. Have a BDSM bonfire, using the books as tinder.

In cause you don't know...I loathe a pretender's book. Even my 18yo daughter wants a copy and she got a resounding NO! Told her she ain't too old to spank for wanting rubbish.

No. From a reader's standpoint, it is poorly written. Terrible word choice, terrible plot, unbelievable characters, not even a decent climax (neither of the literary nor the orgasmic manner). It hurt my head to read it.

Does the book get better or does it hold to the Harlequin romance formula?

I read bodice rippers. One step or more ABOVE the harlequin romance type, but yes, I read them. Even Harlequin would be embarrassed to have this book on their shelves. Honestly, I don't mind formulas... when I know I'm going to get a formula. Julie Garwood books, for example, all have the same kind of woman, the same kind of man. The women all have some quirk that makes them more human and are reluctant damsels in distress. The men all have some broken place in them that needs the woman to heal. In that way, they are predictable. What makes the books pleasant is the author's word choice, the flow, the humor in the books. But I like her way of turning a phrase. At some point I find myself laughing out loud when reading her books. That doesn't often happen when I read, so that one moment (or several) makes it totally worth my while to read her books. It's like... I can drive down the highway to get to where I'm going, but I'd rather take the back roads and enjoy the scenery. The 50 Shades book is drivel that is like driving through a factory town that has been deserted. Sure there's SOME interesting this or that, but they are so few and far between that they get lost in the dross.

I also quite like surprises. This book just... fizzles out. This is not an enjoyable surprise.

As an aside, I wish I was making the kind of money the author is making on that book. We had a discussion in our writer's group about whether we'd be willing to write a "trashy book" for a lot of money than stick to our "literary" writing ways. I think i'm the only one who said that I'd happily write a trashy book for a lot of money. Heck yeah. I'd use a nom de plume, but heck yeah. (Come to think of it, I probably ought to write a trashy book just to see if I could. heh.). That would free me up to write ... you know. "Important Stuff."

I tried... VERY hard, to read this series. I got midway through the first novel and handed my friend's Kindle back to her, thanking the Good Lord that I hadn't invested any money in the drivel. The "pelting the author" suggestion sounds best, but my friend would have been PISSED if I'd thrown her Kindle.

OK, maybe I won't torture our brains until they turn into pudding by trying to read the whole book or god forbid, the whole series. But Hilly's win/win scenario is righteous enough to give it another chapter and a spanking or two.
