A commentator in the Guardian noted that he wouldn't like to be this guy's life insurer. The record shows that liberal reforming Popes have the life expectancy of a cheap filament lightbulb, and no autopsy when they die.

My thoughts too..

Agreed.
After all the Pope has said so far, I am still waiting for him to tell us how he intends to deal with the pedophiles in his employ.
Telling everyone else what the correct choices in their lives should be concerning birth control, abortion, and gay marriage means nothing as long as the bigger sin of abuse continues to be committed against children by priests.

If we are going to be correct, the Roman Catholic Church in America suffered from a Adolescentophilia employees (Hebephilia & Ephebophilia) in their employ. Well over 98% were homosexual acts and statutory rape where male priests targeted 11-17 year old boys. Pedophilia is abuse and rape of pre-adolescents and that issue gratefully, was not the major issue with Catholic Clergy.

Does this make what happened any less horrifying?

Not at all but it must be put in proper context.

Fair enough.

What is the proper context and how should it alter our perception of the abuse?

For the most part it was a direct targeting of intelligent, emotionally and sexually confused but other wise, knowing and sexually aware young males by homosexual men. Almost always, the priest's self serving motives were given as consultative and initiating. The fact that the priest's targets were post or onset puberty and becoming sexually aware is a very important factor.

I've heard that line of BS before. It never gets less repugnant. Raping an 11 or 16 year old boy or girl is unacceptable period.

And yes pedophilia in the strictest sense is a problem in the Catholic Church,

Of course it is!!! It absolutely is!

And one of the major ways to address and combat it is to recognize what exactly is going on and why!!!

To pretend it is something else or to obfuscate the real problem by misdirection or steering away to ancillary issues is equally repugnant and horrid.

The issue was not with the Dogma or Beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, it was with the men they were allowing to be clergy and the cover-up that allowed these men to proliferate!

And for the record and clarification, I was an Alter boy for 10 years easy. I even served as such while I was in the Marine Corps and never once from the time was 10 to 20 years old, in two parishes and a Catholic High School, serving, being mentored and guided, coached, taught or knowing, scores of priests, was I ever experience abuse or was in even a remotely way approached by a deacon, brother or priest in an abusive or suggestive manor.

You chose one priest, who's victim was 7 at the time it started and 12 or even 13 by the end to prove your argument.

But the monster and horrific cleric's actions you linked to fit more with adolescentrasty (in that case hebephilia) than with pederasty.

I am at a loss as to why some people so rightfully appalled at the actions of abusive priests, find themselves not wanting to admit or even covering for why that abuse was happening and covered up in the first place!

I came across an interesting article, saying that the John Jay researchers, commissioned by the U.S. bishops, did not see homosexuality as the cause of the abuse. I have not had a chance to read the report itself.

He raped a 7 year old! It doesn't matter how long it went on! Stop trying to mitigate it or put a different term on it! That priest is in the very strictest since a pedophile.

BTW rather than reposting Bill Donahue's vile crap simply link to it. People wouldn't need to read past Catholic League address.

There is copious research demonstrating that homosexuality is not a factor in pedophilia.

And similar research showing that it most certainly is in cases of Adolescentophilia.

FYI... I could not pick Bill Donahue out of a line up and I have never read anything he has ever written to my best knowledge, nor have I ever logged on to the Catholic League website.

Where did these numbers come from, someone's anus?

The Catholic sex abuse cases are a series of allegations, investigations, trials and convictions of child sexual abuse crimes committed by Catholic priests, nuns and members of Roman Catholic orders against children as young as three years old with the majority between the ages of 11 and 14.

Greg Reynolds should have been excommunicated, more so Greg Reynolds WANTED to be excommunicated.

No one one was forcing him to be a Roman Catholic and he was choosing NOT to obey its doctrine.

The Woman cannot be priests in the Church. Homosexual marriages are not allowed in the Church and finally, NON Catholics are to partake in Holy Communion.

That's right, god forbid we suggest there might be the slightest bit of good in this guy.

I don't know that "good" is the proper word. While I agree that he seems to be a far more caring man than Benedict (not hard), there's more to it than that IMHO. I get the feeling that Francis is less comfortable with the Vatican's stuffiness than predecessors, and more comfortable with the people. And he acts accordingly.

I agree. I think the differences are more style than substance (so far, anyway). But then, style is important, especially in the soul-gathering biz.
