Once again you've nailed it, K. People like ourselves never fail to avoid that, do we? [:)]

A frequent example on these forums is when a poster posts simply to chastise one side for correctly portraying the other.

Another frequent example would be people who manifest an arrogant presumption of their own correctness.

How true you are Mon Brav.

There is also a Final Warning system in place for all but the very worst things. Once you have been contacted a certain amount of times you are given a Final Warning that expires in X number of days. Any violation during that time and you go on moderation.

Is that a new thing?

I recall once getting a "Final Warning" when I hadn't seen a gold email in many months and it turned out that the thing I was warned about wasn't even something mentioned in TOS (Yes, I looked in all of them including the dusty old clay tablets left by Mods 1 and 2).

It got straightened out to everyone's satisfaction but I was just curious about he 'final warning' thingie.

I was going to say something similar. [;)]

Frankly, I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around when it would be appropriate for one side to portray the other, correctly or not. [&:]

VideoAdminGamma -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/26/2013 6:26:02 PM)

Just introduced the system a year or so ago and I believe that Chi and Rho have all the bugs worked out now.

The Final Warning thng is supposed to be a heads up that you have pushed it as far as you can. Hopefully a step before moderation so people can change what they are doing.

Thanks for being a part of CollarMe,

That's not trolling that is critical thinking not passive aggressive whining because someone refuses to ever take a position on anything.

Ignoring the fact that saying "ever" and "on anything" pretty much invalidates the rest anyway, I'm not clear on what you mean by passive aggressive whining because someone refuses to take a position. For example, do you mean like this and this?

Well in all fairness, I intended that expression to refer to an unpleasant and impatient style of moderation that treats people like children, not moderation per se.

Good point, K. After all, all us posters try hard not to use a style of posting that is unpleasant and impatient and treats other posters like children, don't we?

You are trying to make yourself the subject of any response I make. Which should simply get you a time out for trying to manipulate the mods.

TheHeretic -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/26/2013 9:15:21 PM)

FR to the Mods:

Just a positive note, since I launched this happy bundle of negativity. In the decline and fall of XI, this thread would have been deleted the instant she saw it. All of you are getting far more right than you are wrong.

Here is a constructive suggestion.

I recently was participating on a thread that went ugly. A brand new player had joined us, and was pulled into a nasty spiral with a regular who was not playing well others. They went at each other for 3 pages, with the newb getting all the wrong impression of how this place works. The thread was eventually locked and sanitized for our protection, but I haven't seen the newb in here since. I assume he was chastised. A timely intervention might have kept him around, before he decided that if house rules were for a flamefest, he could play that way too.

Perhaps someone could be recruited in a western time zone, where keeping a mod around somewhere at 10:30 - 11:00 p.m. Pacific wouldn't be the same strain as for mods hailing from Eastern/Central time?

"My first question is who decides on what a troll is, it is a term often bandied about during an argument by two people holding differing view points. Who gets to decide, the complainant, the moderator, you, me ? If someone posts something you dont like, the mods can only take action as and when you complain about said post. You, like me, tend to reply in kind and as such we have no rights to moan about poor moderation."

Ah yes, the whingeling pseudo-goodie-goodies who just wait to poke the bear and then complain should their delicate widdle ears suffer the slightest growl.

if trolling is aggression,

passive aggression is merely a spineless form of aggression,

thus trolling as well.

hitting someone with a fist or throwing a rock from an overpass that 'accidentally" hits a speeding car is still a crime of aggression.

half-assed smug replies with subtle digs to provoke a reaction which can be whined about to mods is no different to someone tossing ice-bubes at someone at a pub during a live-music event, then complaining if the other person throws a plastic cup back. The Bouncer has the right to toss both used-pieces-of-toilet-paper-but-not-used-for-urinary-drippage out of the venue.

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/27/2013 12:18:47 AM)

"and you forgot the most common one, those who post drivel as fact and suffer dunning-kruger to a handicapping degree thinking that they are pontificating to the great unwashed and clueless masses with their horseshit. "

And that sentence is a beautiful example of just that. it is a lovely moment in teaching-by-example using an object-lesson.

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/27/2013 12:23:16 AM)

"Can you pedantically (albeit incorrectly) waltz me thru the English Language Mechanizations involved in that dangling pluperfect participle then?"

Not while a Korean Superstar is trampling it, gangdam-style.

Got to love this one. A passive agressive post moaning about passive agressive posting styles. Irony at its finest.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I find certain things to be common to most message boards I've frequented. I suppose over the years, I've gotten kind of a thick skin, as I don't generally get mad at what other people write on a message board. I know it's hard to resist the temptation to lash back when someone is goading you, but it sometimes seems like a no-win situation. I'm always reminded of this old cartoon, which may sum up the situation you're describing:

[image]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-83srh7ODgng/UF1NyyFyKbI/AAAAAAAABfM/gzvqpyhPioo/s640/Needle_and_Threat.jpg[/image]

I also try to put things into a certain perspective. After all, it's only a message board. It's not the end of the world if a thread gets locked or pulled. Sure, it might be a disappointment if I take time to write a post only to find the thread has been locked or pulled, but I try to take it in stride. It's not such a huge deal to me, so I just let it go.

If I'm arguing with someone about a particular issue, I try to keep in mind that it's the issue that's important to me, not some anonymous individual on a message board who may not like me. But I agree that can be difficult if someone is taking some digs and intentionally trying to provoke an angry response.

As to trolls, I have somewhat mixed views on trolls. Some are actually quite clever and humorous, so I'm not usually one to immediately dismiss a troll on sight. Some people say "don't feed the trolls," but they're going to find ways to get fed, one way or the other.

How many warnings (and some of them are obviously not really warnings, because they dont come close to TOS or fair usage) and what is the X? Or is this all secret?

I fear the end of the world is near.
