There is a war on science from the religious right in America...

Two problems arise coincident with the effort to oppose religion. The first is that it all too commonly manifests in attacks on persons; as deluded, ignorant, hallucinating, or worse. The second is that religion, qua religion, is not opposed to science. So while the effort enjoys styling itself as a noble endeavor in the service of all that is good and true, it is in practice more often than not just a self-serving excuse for running around making shit up and insulting people.

Kudos for being specific. Unfortunately, you are the exception.

Yeah, people who support science are the bad guys. They slash my tires when I give presentations opposing creationism to school boards. No, that's the religious crazies who want to force a literal reading of the fantasies of bronze age shepherds into science classrooms. Well they must be the ones bombing abortion clinics. No, that's the religious crazies again. Ok, then it must be them who have fought tooth and nail against taking any action on global warming. Again no, that is the religious crazies again.

I get so sick of religious people attacking science simply because it shakes their faith. Maybe if your faith was stronger you'd be less opposed to science.

Given that we have been discussing OBE and NDE I thought the issue has been the locus of consciousness not a "deep accurate understanding of consciousness."

I thought the issue was whether or not we have ghost eyes [:D]

I didn't say anything of the kind, and I'm not opposed to science. You're just making shit up again.

But hey, thanks. It's always nice when people offer examples of my point.

I am not sure how they would know which car was yours? Are you sure it wasn't someone who already knew you and just didn't like you?

projection at its worst.

thishereboi -> RE: The Covert Messiah (11/6/2013 4:06:29 PM)

That's not projection, that's the truth.

So you believe. However since you cannot read minds you cannot divine the intent behind others actions. So it is projection.

Even if it was a religious nut who slashed his tires, the argument that "religious people" oppose science is just the old "all Muslims are terrorists" argument in a new clown suit.

It seems a relevant comment in the context of the above to note that irony is using words to convey the opposite of their meaning. For example, if someone puts a person on Hide because he wants to ignore them, it would be ironic to find him repeatedly taking advantage of every opportunity to post insulting comments about them. One might almost think that he didn't really want to ignore the person at all, only to tie their hands so he could insult them with impunity.

The first time it was the only Illinois plate in the lot. The second time I had been confronted by the bible thumper before going in, he was trying to intimidate everyone but his supporters from even going in. The third time, car was keyed not slashed, a creationist saw me unloading NCSE labeled material from my car and started screaming at me and had to be physically restrained by a local police officer.

So no none of them knew me before and somehow miraculously my car was vandalized on 3 separate occasions.

Which would be true if the discussion was about all religious people. However need I remind you this topic came up when you defended the religious right?

The discussion was about the religious right and you tried to shift it so it would appear we were attacking religious people in general.

Really? Looking back at recent posts....

I find it sad that these types of discussions here tend to end up as Science vs Religion arguments.
http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=4580804

To put it plainly, if there's any dispute between religion and science, I think we can all agree that religion started this dispute. So, if those who favor science over religion tend to come off a bit harsh towards religion and spirituality, there are good reasons why.
http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=4580836

Vincent is the only person who confined his remarks to the "religious right". Moreover, you accused me of saying that the people who defend science are "bad guys". The people I was talking about aren't defending science.

On a conciliatory note, I am more than sympathetic to seeing people who fuck with my car boiled in oil.
