And anyone that thinks that "blame it on bush" is a legitimate defense for things blowing up 5 years into an Obama administration needs to get a bigger grip.

Oh I get it now, the new tactic isnt to be pissed because Bush started it, its to be pissed because Obama didnt stop it.

Anyone who thinks this started under Bush needs bitch slapped up, put in 4 point restraints and shocked vigorously or possibly just a history lesson. Regardless of when this started there is no correlation of justification - meaning the date it started does not justify the means or current actions. It should have immediately stopped then when a constitutional scholar peace prize winner took the throne. IF you want to argue he did not know evidence goes both ways ATM. He does not and immediately must stop it or is as criminal if not worse.

All experts who do not economically benefit from the USG (monetarily or indirectly) agree that this has exponentially grown out of control under Obama and every day forward. Though I am aware of thousands of people on forums who are blaming Bush almost a decade later.

I voted for Obama in 2008 because I genuinely believed he would prosecute him for war crimes. To date if convicted and Ok'd by a judge, if on that jury I would vote execution. So, I am hardly a Bush/Republican defender. I am more 'progressive' than 'republican oppressive' with some libertarian thrown in. Just tossin that salad out there.

Nothing you have said alters the fact that spying on Merkel started under Bush, as I stated. The fact Obama should have stopped it is a whole different debate.

Reports are that as soon as Obama was informed it was happening he did stop it.

More news breaking on the BBC...... It seems that the White House is starting to understand the diplomatic mess and public outcry on spying is getting serious.

German media reported that the US had bugged Ms Merkel's phone for more than a decade - and that the surveillance only ended a few months ago.

Well, Obama did say it wasn't going to be business as usual in DC.

Reports suggest that Obama knew in 2010, so, factoring in typical US Government inefficiencies, it's likely that Obama did call for it to end as soon as he heard about it, and that it took 3 years (or so) to get it done. lol

Hello Mr. President. I know you are listening through our great ear in the internet, the wonderful NSA who we support along with Rev. Wright, who is your spiritual leader for most of your very wonderful life.

The reason I am writing you, Mr. Obama, is that I was wondering if you could start paying attention a little bit, just a tiny little bit more, to what your people do. I know you are very busy and all and are traveling and speechifying and that is very important I agree, and so I guess it is asking too much for you to, how should I say this without hurting your feelings, I'll just come out and say it, we need someone in charge. So, can you find somebody because it's getting kinda real bad, real, real bad, and I'm scared we're not going to make it through this one.

Look, the NSA can use history to justify tapping Angela Merkel's phone, one name "Hitler."

As for the other countries, Spain is justified because they launched the Armada against England, Brazil is the origin point of the Africanized bees.

Honestly, I doubt the US govt "gets it".. Imo, it doesn't matter what the US does, it simply can not be trusted about anything.. period.. glad the Japanese told them to take a flying leap.. every country needs to do that, imo..

One thing that struck me about all this is that they were able to bug Merkel's phone for over a decade, and the Germans ostensibly didn't even realize it or have anything in place to prevent it. That seemed to be a recurring weakness during WW2, wasn't it?

Look at all the bugs that Col. Hogan was able to slip into Klink's office. They had his phone bugged, his quarters bugged, his office - and Klink was completely unaware. All they'd have to do is slip Schultz a few candy bars, and he'd look the other way.

Every country spies on every other country, even those who are currently allies.
Part paranoia.
Part precaution.
Part Knowledge is power.
A nation that doesn't is doomed.
Not nice, but the way the world works.
U S spying cannot be looked at in isolation.

I agree, however, I think that the governments can put the tapes of conversations and video surveillance to use to ease budget problems.

I mean, how many hours of phone sex has the NSA gathered by now? Either use it as blackmail or set up a web site where you can pay to hear Putin talking dirty to his mistress?

This has been brought up countless times. I believe in this thread. Regurgitated trite drivel gets old.

Name one nation, which was not assisting the NSA directly that has teams similar to TAO or SCS which were operating in other nations/embassies without permission. Keep in mind we have tens of thousands of leaked documents about spying from all over the world Cable Gate or FAS eat them up. Hundreds of others can also be found on publicintelligence or 5-6 other sites accessible by anyone with an internet connection,.

Name one nation capturing billions of calls of civilians in a nation it currently has or has had agreements like UKUSA set up with?

This is a serious question. Out of all of the NSA/SCS programs we have learned of since 6/4/2013: X Keyscore, EgotisticalGiraffe, BullRun, Genie, Ocean, ACIDFOX which one do you know the most about?
