Oh good, throw in the edit while I'm responding to the first part of your post LMAO [8D]

As to the edited part, yes, it would be a great idea to catch them in the first place. The would be victim holds him at gun point until the police arrive.

What's interesting to me is; as always, it's the people who didn't grow up in America (for the most part) that so strongly wish to influence our way of a life.

News flash: In a free society, the people don't need a reason to make something legal; the government needs a good reason to make something illegal.

Non-Americans have the same right to voice their opinions as you do.. Do you seriously think any non-Americans can actually influence "your" way of life? I simply see this as us non-Americans not understanding the whole gun culture and some feeling so strongly about that issue (& likely various other issues) that they choose to not live in the US..

News flash: there are plenty of Americans that want the gun thing changed & those are the people that can actually do it.. [;)]

guns in the home dropped more than 40 percent."

You are going to have to explain to me how adding one more gun to the several million already there is going to magically stop his creep re-offending........

. One more gun won't stop the creep from reoffending unless of course his would be victim chose to arm herself with that particular gun. If that's the case then it's not magic, it's bullets that will penetrate his skull and blow his brains out. [8D] The creep will never reoffend ever again.

I'm glad that we now agree that arming the population on its own isn't going to change anything. Your suggestion has already been tried and proved to be a total failure.

The control group was the several million Californians who own licensed, legitimate weapons who were totally unable to prevent this creep raping women. There's no reason whatsoever to assume that increasing the size of the control group will alter the outcome and every reason not to.

I get the impression that you have in mind living in some kind of armed camp where all citizens go about their business armed to the teeth all the time. You may call that a solution, I would call it a living hell.

You make good points so tell us how you would handle this one...Say some developmentally disabled judge decides this guy should live three doors down from you, or perhaps your mom (and the judges hands are not tied on releasing the guy btw - it's his call, as is the location). Typical police response time is over 15 minutes. What changes might you want to make in the household?

Here's the problem, though...

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/us/rate-of-gun-ownership-is-down-survey-shows.html?_r=0

"4-Decade Decline"

[image]http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/03/20/us/20guns-webgraphic/20guns-webgraphic-articleInline.gif[/image]

http://www.gallup.com/poll/150353/self-reported-gun-ownership-highest-1993.aspx

"Highest Since 1993"

[image]http://content.gallup.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupSpaces/Production/Cms/POLL/sgcossbzcei5hhmpeq0ryq.gif[/image]

Both can't be correct.

[image]http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/files/2012/07/gun-ownership-declining1.png[/image]

Conflicting surveys means, what? One or both surveys may not have had honest respondents. Makes it difficult to really analyze the data presented, doesn't it?

You are of course correct, the only thing worse than having an animal like this running free would be for some evil armed citizen to deal with him in an unsympathetic manner.

So much for the rule of law.

I have fun with thread titles, dude. Get over it.

I live in the broader community where this is happening. I've been seeing this guy's mustache on the news every few years since I was a kid.

Not according to the custody record in the cite of the op.

As far as treatment goes. there is a hell of a lot of it available in LA County. Where they are putting this guy is about as far from any of it as you can get. It's an unincorporated community of about 12,000 people.

About fifteen miles from palmdale/lancaster (population @250,000)

It's 20 miles from the nearest police station. It's a town with 1. 1 stoplight

I go through there at least once a week and I have never seen a stop light. As far as I know the fucking town only has a half dozen stop signs.

FR

Given the current rules in California, children's toys in the yard are almost as good as a sign that says "no readily accessible guns on the premises."

This would seem to imply that all of those with children are against owning guns[8|]

I had one of those, "never mind the dog" signs, but it was kind of a joke. Nobody in their right mind was going to never mind the dog that was snarling at them from behind it.

There was this fellow who used to burglarize the junk yards that had the "snarling mutt" posted for the protection of their car parts. It seems that the introduction of a bitch in heat inhibits the "snarling mutts" effectiveness.

One of the ten lagrest economies in the world.
Access to world class sports.
Access to world calss entertainment.
High paying jobs.

depends on how the survey questions were worded.. the survey I used states..

"Except for the U.S. Census, the GSS is the most frequently analyzed source of information in the social sciences...It is the only survey that has tracked the opinions of Americans over an extended period of time. The GSS is also a major teaching tool. We know of over 14,000 research uses such as articles in academic journals, books, and Ph.D. dissertations based on the GSS and about 250,000 students annually who use it in their classes.” "

and too, we have seen knee-jerk reactions with people running out and buying a gun in reaction to heavily reported mass shootings and news reports of the govt making certain guns more difficult to buy.. The best way to create a buying frenzy is to tell people they cant have something anymore.. [8|]

Is this too simple for you non-Americans to comprehend: Had the Minutemen not had guns there never would have been an America in the first place.

News Flash: The only Americans wanting the gun thing changed are those who want to fundamentally transform America from a Democratic Republic (wherein the government is subordinate to the people) to a Communist/Marxist Dictatorship (wherein the people are subordinate to one person).

As for the 40% decline in American households reporting any guns in the home...

(from the link you provided)
Reasons for the Decline
Key factors contributing to the continuing decline in household and personal gun ownership in America include the following:

1) The aging of the current-gun owning population—primarily white males—and a lack of interest in guns by youth.
2) The end of military conscription.
3) The decreasing popularity of hunting.
4) Land-use issues that limit hunting and other shooting activities.
5) Environmental and zoning issues that force shooting ranges to close and limit new range construction.
6) The increase in single-parent homes headed by women.

I would add one more reason: Ever-increasing fear of the government confiscating guns...especially under Obama.

I am talking about the America today & gun ownership of today, not hundreds of years in the past..

News Flash: contrary to what most believe, the US has become a Police State (with its forfeiture laws, its illegal check stops, its invasive reporting of the population, with its spying on its people) than a democracy.. again, that is the America of today...

thompsonx -> RE: One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/27/2013 10:38:10 AM)

Had the Minutemen not had guns there never would have been an America in the first place.

Had castro not had any guns there would never have been an end to the dictatorship of batista.
Had the bolshiviks not had any guns there would never have been an end to the dictatorship of the tsar.
So does this mean that the minute men and the bolshiviks were brothers in arms?

I, as a female, am the best person to decide if I want or don't want a gun where I live or any where near me..

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So are those women who want to own one.
You can find a study to prove anything, I once saw one that "proved" that the U S was still owned by the King of England.

I never said I was speaking for anyone other than myself.. I expect other women to be adult enough to make their own decisions, either way..

The stats and study I quoted was from the U.S. Department of Justice.. I expect them to be pretty accurate...

And yet totally misleading do to lack of context

BamaD -> RE: One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/27/2013 10:53:27 AM)

Citation please??

And considering we haven't had a 'king' for more than 6 decades, I think you might find that a tad difficult to substatiate.

It was provided in a thread months ago, it was absurd, and I am not going to derail the thread by argueing about it.

BamaD -> RE: One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/27/2013 10:54:32 AM)

And you would only have that opinion if you lived in a country that is prolific with guns.
You wouldn't even be thinking along those lines if you lived elsewhere.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So being an American makes me wrong?

BamaD -> RE: One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/27/2013 10:55:52 AM)

Having lived in both countries, I know where I feel much safer and not likely to die prematurely.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And you believe that American cops want guns taken away from civilians.

Lucylastic -> RE: One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/27/2013 10:56:34 AM)

nope being wrong is what makes someone wrong

women who were murdered were more likely, not less likely, to have purchased a handgun in the three years prior to their deaths

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because women who are being threatened are far more likely to get a firearm so this stat is totally misleading.

assuming that they were being threatened prior to purchasing (& you have no stats or link providing any proof of that), having a gun didn't save them.. and I wonder how many of them were killed with their own guns.. [8|]

Wonder away, FBI stats show you are wrong.

Actually, I think that stat is rather poignant.

You get threatened (probably by some asshat with a gun)....
So you buy a gun for yourself....
And you have now increased your chances of being killed because of it.

And they say guns are the answer???
Oh the irony!!

I guess it's lost on the likes of Bama.

Absurd lap in logic assuming that those women with reason to fear being killed were only killed because they got a gun. THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
