Same here. Although, I've been toying with holding a holiday soap making class. (how to make gifty items) Just because I love that look that people get the first time they see it turn into soap.

Blonderfluff does it the brave way. I just use melt-n-pour, but dang, you can make the prettiest stuff with it. Here are some 'gemstone' hearts I made:



I'll have to give this a try one day. I used some soap my girlfriend made. Nice stuff. Had my skin softer than a roasted pear.

Status: offline 		Thank you, hlen! Like Oside and Blonder, it used to be a business and lost all its fun because of it. Now I just do it to have gifts handy, and make whatever I'm in the mood for.

I really am impressed with folks willing to work with cold and hot-process soap. It's not a bullet-proof process, and I'm pretty sure I'd find a way to screw it up.

Blonder, if you want to CMail the pictures to me, I can size them for you to post.

Lavender 40/42. Best EVER. people don't realize how un- flowery REAL lavender smells. It's much more herbally, spicy.

Another favorite .....lemongrass.

One of the by products of mixing the acid and the base (lye and oils) is GLYCERIN. This is the magical ingredient. And it's moisturizing , lathery and wonderful.
So. Soap companies make soap. Remove the glycerin(yup. The best part) they replace it with chemical sudsing agents.
Then, they put the glycerin in their lotion, because your skin is so itchy and dry from using their crap bath bar, that you need to buy their moisturizers. They double Their money.

Most of what you buy in the grocery stores are called SynDet bars. They're half soap (with the glycerin removed) and the other half is synthetic detergents. It's why they're labeled as "Bath Bar" rather than soap. This is Dove's White Bar:

Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Tallowate or Sodium Palmitate, Lauric Acid, Sodium Isethionate, Water, Sodium Stearate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoate or Sodium Palm Kernelate, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Titanium Dioxide

Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate is a detergent
Stearic Acid is a natural hardening agent
Sodium Tallowate is soap made with beef or deer fat - Sodium Palmitate is soap made from Palm Oil
Lauric Acid is the fat from coconut or palm oil
Sodium Stearate - soap made from stearic acid
Cocamidopropyl Betaine - detergent
Sodium Cocoate - soap made from coconut oil - Sodium Palm Kernelate - soap made from Palm Kernel Oil
Sodium Chloride - salt to make the "soap" hard
Tetrasodium EDTA & Tetrasodium Etidronate are preservatives
Titanium Dioxide is what makes it white

You'll notice there is no glycerin which is actually what makes a soap better for your skin. Glycerin is used in the manufacture of cosmetics and explosives, so it's worth more than the soap. They press the glycerin out to be sold separately. (It also makes the soap softer which they also don't want)



Most body washes and liquid hand soap is just straight detergent.

The other thing we always laughed at was Dove with 1/4 moisturizing cream. Creams and lotions are a suspension of water and oil. Soap is made with...wait for it.....water and oil.

Status: offline 		Both of my oil suppliers were local to SoCal. Natural Oils International and Cibaria.

I bought my sodium hydroxide, citric acid, baking soda etc from the local chemical supply company.

My favorite EO supplier is no longer in business, which was EOU.

The Herbarie

Liberty Natural

Essential Wholesale

New Direction Aromatics

Oh and I found best quality and price on Olive Oil was Costco on their 5 litre bottles.

New Direction is one of my favorites as well.
And I get my Dead Sea salts directly from Israel. Lucky me has a brother that travels extensively and made me a contact there. She sends in a 5gallon poly bag with some sea water still in it. Liquid gold!!!

If you want to go the melt and pour route, http://www.sficcorp.com/images/d45a1f01be204e484e27f34ee0fa1d37.pdf, SFIC is a great company to buy various high quality bases. I haven't ordered for a while, but there used to be quite a high minimum to make an order since they are wholesalers.
