I seen to have noticed that a lot of Pro-Dommes I've met have got some kind of mental health problem,, -(and I define Pro-Domme has someone who derives a substantial part of their income from providing commercial sessions.. ) - Ranging from a history of "depressive episodes" - and currently on long term medication ... to Bi-Polar disorder... Has anyone else noticed the same thing ... i.e - are the majority of Pro-Dommes "mad" - ? I've also met one or two who are quite deluded - and that's putting it kindly :-)

No I can't honestly say I've noticed this, but then again, I'm neither a client nor a mental health professional. I'm curious how you are coming to this conclusion though. Are they telling you their diagnosis? Or is this your own conclusion? As for 'deluded' I imagine most of them are acting a role in order to attract clients; if they call themselves goddesses and their clients lowly worms, it doesn't mean they actually believe it to be true.

Just how many pro-Dommes have you met to come to this conclusion? Are you a mental health professional who knows what signs and symptoms to look for to make a diagnosis? Have these women volunteered information to you about their mental health? What did you use as a control? Inquiring minds want to know!!

Since it's estimated that one in four people will suffer mental illness at some point, it is fair to assume that some dommes will be among them. But why should this be because they are prodommes? Is it simply because they are, you know, human beings?

1.As it happens I am medically qualified - with professional qualifications in the mental health field .. - though admittedly it's not my main area of practice at the moment ... - so I'm able to make a judgement regarding someone's mental state.. 2. I can think of a couple of high profile dommes - who have written public memoirs - in which they frankly disclose a mental health issue... 3. I session with Pro-Dommes .. I guess over the years the number I've met has been in double figures ... - "some" of those have disclosed various "health issues" to me ... 4. I've met "a number" of life-style dominant women ... - I think I can recognise the difference between a "fetish role play" - and someone who quite frankly has some borderline personality disorder .. ( not to mention "problem drinking" - but that's another issue .. ) 5. My guess is, there is probably a large incidence of undiagnosed Bi-Polar in the "Pro-Domme" population .. That's what I think - I'm asking what YOU think ... :-)

To the OP, I think your question would probably be good research as there are all sorts of people on this forum the opinions here will probably not satisfy. However I tend to notice more mental illness in many sub/slaves. So the complete opposite. I presume dominants have their issues but I am more concerned with individuals who submit to another when they have been abused or are emotionally triggered by real life situations and try to work through those feelings in fantasy and possibly with someone who could be dangerous. Not healthy. I assume that if you're finding many Pro-Dommes with mental health issues it is probably due to some need to be in control of something. When we don't have control over ourselves we tend to look to something or someone we can control.

I have met a shit load of people in this lifestyle and I haven't noticed that at all. There are a those with issues who id as dominant but I also know those on the other side of the kneel that have the same problems so I am not seeing the connection you are making. Maybe it has something to do with the kind of people you attract.

You use the word mad, and supposing you have an "ability" to make that diagnosis, I wouldnt quit your day job. Im certainly not saying all dominants are cray cray, I would probably put it at the same level as submissives switches, slaves and anyone else in the kinky world. Its only recently that BDSM was regarded as not being a mental disease, and we certainly have "weird" desires as opposed to the "normals". Thank the gods

To come here and try and claim that means this "are the majority of Pro-Dommes "mad"" is just stupid.

If I dealt only with one specific subset of a population, I could say the same thing. I'm willing to bet that there is underdiagnosed mental illness in every segment of the human population. No one segment has the market cornered. You just notice it in the one population you deal with. How do you know you aren't subconsciously selecting for the very people you speak of. I too think your premise is far reaching and rather ridiculous.

Thank you, MissKittyD. OP, I'm not much of one to suggest that BDSM folk are "more" anything than the rest of the general population. We're not smarter, more sick, better educated, or anything that is 'greater' than the rest of society. And, if you're a professional, you know you're not really diagnosing somebody during the little bit of chit chat that you're having during your pro sessions. That's just making you sound like a hack and seeing the things that you want to see.

I'm not claiming to "diagnose anyone.".. the people I come across - are those who already have a diagnosis ... and are on medication... and have admitted as much to me - over various conversations.... Socially, I come across all sorts of groups of people in my life ... and meet a wide cross-section of folk in my day-to-day role ..( and more Pro-Dommes -than other Professional groups- seem to have mental health issuses. ) I'm simply reporting that as an observation...i.e - a lot of Pro-Dommes I've met are on medication for mental health issues.. I'm simply asking if anyone else has noticed the same thing ..

I would imagine there are a lot of undiagnosed illnesses among prodommes. And the exact same amount of undiagnosed illnesses among clients of the same. And among pro subs and life style subs. And lifestyle dominants. And vanillas. Everything from mood disorders to psoriasis actually will be undiagnosed because unless it totally prevents functioning, people do not enjoy going to doctors for things they can manage. I sincerely doubt however that you can successfully diagnose mood swings which may occur months apart when you see someone only two or three times a year for an hour each time. The fact that you are not treating them professionally, you are not observing them for weeks on end in a clinical setting, the fact that you do not have access to their friends, families and colleagues to give questionnaires to tells me you've fallen into a common medical trap. Believing that you are somehow above needing to do tests in order to give a proper diagnosis. You do know the AMA frowns heavily on treating people the way you're doing it? My oldest cycles every five minutes and it still took six weeks in a psych hospital to come out with an accurate diagnosis. Your belief that you can do this inside an hour when what you're mainly concerned with is the hardness of your dick leads me to diagnose you with delusions of grandeur, hubris in other words. And I'm also wondering if your wife knows about all these 'professional appointments'.

I find your somewhat sweeping generalisation to be quite "mad" in itself. I can honestly say that more Americans on this and other sites appear to be on some sort of mental health drugs. But would it be sane or even appropriate to make an assanine quantum leap and say that Americans are more mentally ill than....just about anyone else? No, it wouldn't. Because most sites are US based and frequented (probably) by more Americans than any other nationality. You could possibly surmise that amongst the small circle of people you come across but it certainly isn't a representative sample to base your hypothesis on. You frequent Pro Dommes so your sample would be skewed towards that. I see a lot more Americans on here than anyone else so if I tried to take a sample, that too would be skewed towards Americans and would likewise be very biased. Nope. Your sample base is heavilly weighted to your exposure and therefore inaccurate. And as Rosa said, why should we even be discussing the metal issues of Pro Dommes on here?

So, I do agree with this. But, I will also say that there are those that are in WIITWD because their behavior is tolerated (to a point).

I had anxiety issues when I was married. I wasn't a Domme then. At all. Except in my head. I'm now a Domme. (Lifestyle, fwiw). I have no anxiety issues and no mental health issues. Ergo, being a Domme cured my mental health issues. What say you to that?

What passes for "domina" in me-too land is very much at odds with what I'd consider to be what even remotely constitutes such. Strippers, teenage/twenty-something hustlers, and opportunistic whores with whips doing "the domme thing" seldom make the grade in my eyes. When you get past that morass and focus on the women who remain (and there tend to be few who do), I'm not so sure they are any more or less sane than the rest of us. My personal feelings are that true blue dominant females with the passion and wherewithal to be dominant in their lives are pretty rare birds.

It seems as if half the women I encounter in day to day life are some mental health drug, prozac, xanax etc. If my experience is anything, then it would follow that a good number of Dommes are on something too. The males may be on the same drugs but are not as open about it. And that wraps up my pretty much useless anecdotal evidence.
