Considering the below quote from your OP, I'm very dubious about the statement above'

quote:

are the majority of Pro-Dommes "mad" - ?

I haven't heard of a mental health professional in years who would call a person with depression or bipolar disorder, "mad", or "crazy" or "insane.

Yes but in all fairness to the op, he admitted that he isn't actually working in the field. It could be that he used that word one to many times and they won't have anything to do with him.

Wonderful, now we don't just get "Why are female subs so fat?" but we get "Why are pro dommes so crazy?"

Therefore, IF there is an unusually high occurrence of BPD among the pro-Dommes, then that is because you are unusually attracted to women with BPD, and self select toward women with this disorder.

Since it's estimated that one in four people will suffer mental illness at some point, it is fair to assume that some dommes will be among them. But why should this be because they are prodommes? Is it simply because they are, you know, human beings?

I don't have the faintest idea about the correlation between ProDommes/Dominant Ladies & mental health.

Speaking for myself, I'm a complete teapot hahahahahahahaha, where's my meds nurse?

MistressCosette -> RE: Dominant women and mental illness... (11/9/2013 10:08:42 AM)

This "mental health professional" has NO CLUE about statistical analysis, correlations, test studies, or anything of a controlled analytic nature. He has met "in double figures" (that's 10 or more...lol) a number of pro-dommes and drawn conclusions that are totally erroneous. His grasp of psychology and modern statistics is not even poor at its best point. He should be ASHAMED if he works in the mental health profession or anything related to it. We need to keep people like him away from mentally ill people. They wouldn't accept him anyway.
Having said all that, I believe that pro-Dommes are either just as sane or just as crazy as the rest of us. THAT'S a safe observation. Not like that crackpot thing he wrote, which is utter drivel.

http://www.primewire.ag/watch-2717865-The-Marketing-of-Madness-Are-We-All-Insane

The documentary, The Marketing of Madness, explains a lot! Anyone concerned or interested in mental health will enjoy it. Anyone profiting from drugging people will hate it.

Just 2 weeks ago, I heard a radio ad for "Shift-worker Disorder" and yes, there's a drug for it! LOL Maybe that is what the OP is seeing? LOL

It has been said that journalism deals with facts but fiction deals with truth. So, while I prefer the documentary, here's some "fiction" if that's more to your taste.

As a medically qualified professional I'm sure you're aware of the fact that people who are drawn to people with BPD, and who partner up with them, or manage to maintain long term relationships with them, are so drawn to them and manage to put up with them because they have their own very distinctive pathology enabling them to be attracted to, and able to put up with BPDers.

You should talk to a qualified professional about why you're so irrationally drawn to BPders, and fix some of your low self-esteem/codependency issues.
My guess is that it would solve the statistical bias in your sample group.

Yes, I am drawn to men with Narcissistic PD and self-select for them. Therapy helped me make better choices.

njlauren -> RE: Dominant women and mental illness... (11/17/2013 8:25:24 PM)

I question the statement and quite honestly, if you specialty is anywhere around mental health issues, you would know not to make such a broad statement. First of all, as Marc pointed out, a number of pro dommes are not lifestyle, they do it to make money, whether hooker with whips of young women who can make money role playing the domina. From personal experience back in the day, and from friendship with more than a few pro dommes who were lifestyle, there are generally a lot more of the ones roleplaying through it then doing it because it is who they are. Right there, assuming your statements are correct, it would be hard to correlate mental illness with being a pro domme, since many are not really dominant.

More importantly, based on my own experience, I doubt that among pro dommes that a larger percentage of them are diagnosable as truly mentally ill. People get treated for depression all the time, or anxiety, who are not mentally ill, there is a difference between low level depression and bi polar, for example, or someone who is neurotic from someone who could be considered clinically mentally ill. Is someone on prozac or paxil mentally ill? More than likely, no. Is someone with a drinking problem or addiction mentally ill? No. Do pro dommes suffer from the above? Yep.

Over the years I got to know a lot of dommes, the 15 years I worked with pro dommes, and to be honest I saw very few or knew of very few that I would consider to be unbalanced or whacked out that way. There were some by reputation or from what I saw of them I might say I thought they were.....on the other hand, that also is only my evidence, I am not a trained professional, but having learned how complex mental health issues are, I doubt a professional could make a claim like "most pro dommes are mentally ill" without running one hell of a study. It could be the dommes the OP saw were in fact mentally ill or had issues, but they still represent a small fraction of all the ones out there, maybe the OP is attracted to dommes who are weird....

Ya know...the guy could have been more subtle...he's an idiot....shit happens.

It really doesn't change much the fact that women are crazy.

He nailed that one...Dommes, or not.

The only personal product left in the United Sates allowed to have lead in it is....liptsick.

You're all soft, smell fucking awesome.......look killer in heels but.....you eat lead every day....shit that the feds removed from paint in the late 60's because kids were licking window sills...

I'd like 4 myself....I just know that 1 is enough work for most.

directiveerror -> RE: Dominant women and mental illness... (11/17/2013 9:30:24 PM)

i think people need to remember that the word "crazy" has a very broad list of definitions
crazy
a : full of cracks or flaws : unsound <they were very crazy, wretched cabins — Charles Dickens>
b : crooked, askew
2a : mad, insane <yelling like a crazy man>
b (1) : impractical <a crazy plan> (2) : erratic <crazy drivers>
c : being out of the ordinary : unusual <a taste for crazy hats>
3a : distracted with desire or excitement <a thrill-crazy mob>
b : absurdly fond : infatuated <he's crazy about the girl>
c : passionately preoccupied : obsessed <crazy about boats>

i've been called crazy who knows how many times of course whenever someone is asked to specify they just say the same lines "all women are crazy" i wonder how many of these people have made a clear list of what they define as sane/crazy behaviors and analytically measured any correlation between gender... or if they all just parrot back whatever nonsense they hear.... all i know is that if i meet any of those criteria it is most likely to be c: being out of the ordinary... while all men i have encountered lack control of their emotions, are infatuated, obsessed, impractical, mad, and since they are the minority gender 'unusual'..... the point being, that everyone will always assume crazy is whatever they are not capable of understanding. if you want to find less crazy, try finding more understanding.

or just try this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5E4W1G2S4I

Bipolar people often have hyper sexuality. One could also posit that many with mental health issues have a hard time holding down a regular job so some view Pro-Domming as a means to easy, albeit sporadic income. The same could, in theory, apply to strippers, porn stars etc. But I think with the OP its just random chance.

disretion7 -> RE: Dominant women and mental illness... (11/18/2013 6:41:24 PM)

I've met quite a few pro-Dommes, including one who is a credentialed psychiatrist, and (while I'm admittedly no trained mental health type) saw nothing the indicated obvious mental illness. Perhaps it's worth noting that some were pro-Dommes with older clients while being lifestyle-only Dommes or even submissives to others they, personally, found attractive.

stiv2009 -> RE: Dominant women and mental illness... (11/19/2013 9:56:32 AM)

Maybe the poster has a point - but it needs to be generalized. Might not the incidence of some degree of mental health issues be more prominent among all BDSM folk - not just dominant women? We are, after all, people who get a kick from either inflicting or receiving pain and humiliation. This is a bit different from getting a kick from motorsport, hunting and fishing, playing bridge, cooking for large parties and any other passionate activity that people might have. If you are into the eroticization of pain and humiliation - its not unreasonable to think that there might have been unusual kinds of (real - not erotic) pain and humiliation in your own life, or in the lives of those close to you. Otherwise why do it?

The novelist Michel Houellebecq wrote (in the novel Platform) "“Our genitals exist as a source of permanent, accessible pleasure. The god who created all our unhappinesses, who made us short-lived, vain and cruel, has also provided this form of meagre compensation”

It appears that the opposite may be true -- that, in fact, BDSM practitioners report lower psychological distress than the vanilla population. I personally think this is because the average income level of a kinkster is higher than that of the average vanilla, and money removes a lot of stressors. But I don't really know.

Here are some slides that might whet your appetite. From the population in the study, researchers found that BDSMers have lower distress, and that the most distressed BDSM group is sub women.

YourMasterGod -> RE: Dominant women and mental illness... (11/19/2013 3:01:21 PM)

Well, I agree. Take 100 of them and take 100 vanilla women, follow a scientific method as advised by a well experienced statistician or a research psychologist/psychiatrist. Have the sample pool diagnosed by a certified/experienced psychiatrist. The results will bear out the suspicions conclusively. Any volunteers?! :-)
