You don't think the cop could have handled the situation differently, like say shooting out the tires on the car instead of shooting the 19 year old? The kid acted stupidly, for sure, but I'm not convinced it was an offense punishable by death.

Shooting out tires are the stuff of movies. Both the truck and the cop cars were in a high speed chase. When do you propose shooting out tires? Cop sticks his gun out the window while driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed chasing this kid through the college? Did you see how many other vehicles were around during the chase? What happens if the bullet ricocheted off the tire and hit someone in the head instead of puncturing the tire? Or let's say he did manage to shoot out the tire and the truck loses control and slams into another car? Hopefully the innocent people in the other car lived. But that's a pretty big damned truck, not one of those little Smartcars.

The only thing that could have worked to deflate tires safely was stop sticks. Which from the looks of things no one had time to set up. And frankly if this kid was willing to hit cop cars repeatedly, I don't think swerving to hit the officer deploying the spike strip is entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Sadly the kid made a shitty choice and he paid the price for it. But he made the choices that led to the outcome. You think him pulling over and being arrested for stealing his dad's truck would have resulted in the same outcome? Should he have died? No, no one should. But he didn't leave the officers with many choices. Relying on Hollywood movie magic to prevent a bunch of innocent people from being slaughtered by the out of control man in the middle of a tantrum because Daddy wouldn't buy him smokes isn't good either.

Back when my dad was a cop one of the officers tried that, bullet bounced and by an amazing stroke of bad luck struck the kid in the head.
This is one reason cops don't do this.
Just think if they had tried shooting out the tires this thread could be "dad calls cops to teach son a lesson thy shoot innocent bystander".

The kid wanted smokes. He got smoked. Darwin. [8D]

Get grip people. This is AMERICA. Americans LOVE their fucking guns...the cops even more. So it is an ever increasing culture...yes culture, shoot first and ask questions later.

The killing is NEVER going to stop with America's rampant love-their-guns culture.

Maybe we should blame this on Americans rampant love of cars.
Had the kid not tried to run over the cop he wouldn't have been shot.

  •  (CBS/AP) AMES, Iowa -  A 19-year-old man was fatally shot by police on the campus of Iowa State University after his father called authorities to report that the teen had stolen his truck, reports CBS affiliate KCCI.
Tyler Comstock, 19, of Boone, was shot dead by Officer Adam McPherson, an 8-year-veteran of the department, at the end of an at-times high-speed pursuit through the city's streets that ended on the college campus, reports the station.

The officer who shot the teen in Ames, Iowa Monday was cleared Thursday of wrongdoing, and the investigation was closed, reports the DeMoines Register.
A state's attorney says the police officer who fatally shot the apparently unarmed man "acted reasonably under very difficult circumstances and....use of deadly force was justified,"  reported KCCI.

Tyler Comstock's father, James Comstock, told the Des Moines Register he refused to buy his son a package of cigarettes, which angered him and started the incident. James Comstock had called police to report the stolen vehicle.

Comstock told the newspaper he's outraged police shot his son. Other family members told the newspaper police should have backed off the pursuit because they knew who they were chasing.

Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes, who said the officer's actions were justified, in his report states, "In watching the videos I can't help but express my concern that it was only by sheer luck that no one else was seriously injured or killed by Mr. Comstock."
Holmes said "Comstock's actions did not allow any amount of time for the officers to devise or employ other 'means' to mitigate or defuse the situation ahead of the shooting..."
Authorities said video from police car cameras clearly shows Comstock's disregard for citizens as the chase continued.
Videos from inside McPherson's car and another officer's car, played during a Thursday news conference, show Comstock backing up and hitting a police officer's car, a trailer flying off the truck, and the truck speeding down Ames streets, racing past motorists and pedestrians, and eventually the conclusion of the chase on the ISU campus. Gunshots can be heard in both videos.
Authorities said there was no directive from dispatch to call off the pursuit. Officers did reduce speed when they reached campus but continued to follow Comstock.
McPherson remains on paid administrative leave. Authorities said there is no timeline yet on when he will return to duty.
State investigators said Wednesday that autopsy results show Comstock died from a gunshot wound to the head and chest.
Police said he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time after the shooting.
Family members told KCCI on Wednesday that Comstock shouldn't have died. They said Comstock had anger problems and would have returned the truck if officers had stopped pursuing him.
They said the officer will have to live with his decision to shoot.
"He has to live with that for the rest of his life of guilt of killing another person's family member, which we truly loved," Blake Jensen, Comstock's cousin, told the station.

"He had no right to kill him or shoot him. If he would have just listened to the dispatcher we would still have him (alive). I know he was just going his job, but if he would have just listened this wouldn't even have happened," said LaShawn Jensen, another one of Comstock's cousins.
Gary Shepley, Tyler Comstock's step-grandfather, questioned why police didn't back away from the truck as suggested by an officer during the chase. Comstock's family says the teenager was not armed.
Police said the truck Comstock was driving was reported stolen from Spring-Green Lawn Care in Boone, where his dad worked. Spring-Green workers said the father and son argued over money for a pack of cigarettes before Comstock took off in the truck.
Comstock has been living at a homeless shelter. People at the shelter told KCCI that Comstock was working with his dad on the day of the chase and shooting.
"I seen him the night before. The night before he was calm," said Gerald Elliott, manager of the All for Jesus Homeless Shelter. "We'd all seen him, you know, just before he left we had all seen him and knowing he was just going to work with his dad. You know you don't expect something like that."
The case remains under investigation by Ames police, ISU police and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Picture this: the kid runs down a string of people, and the police apologise for not stopping him because they knew his name.

As others have noted, a vehicle like that is a deadly weapon, and he was doing the equivalent of firing wildly in all directions. And shooting out the tyres is another thing only works in movies, like shooting a gun out of someone's hand: LEOs will have seen cars carry on for miles with all tyres gone, when the driver is crazy enough.

Age matters because children aren't fully formed adults. They're morons, and there are scientifically proven reasons why they're assholes. They don't have the same neurophysiology as adults and are not on the same playing field. Age also matters because it's sad when someone's time on earth is cut short.

SeekingTrinity -> RE: Dad Calls Cops on Son to Teach Him a Lesson, Cops Shoot Son Dead (11/10/2013 10:42:03 AM)

Funny, but I knew at an even younger age than he was that stealing a vehicle, leading police on a high speed chase, ramming into police cars, putting countless innocent people at risk of injury/death, and not stopping when ordered by police officers is wrong.

Right there in Bama's article (my bold) is the whole problem with how this story is being viewed and reported, and reacted to by the chattering class. The little shithead WAS armed, and was using his weapon.

DaNewAgeViking -> RE: Dad Calls Cops on Son to Teach Him a Lesson, Cops Shoot Son Dead (11/10/2013 12:09:43 PM)

Watched the videos: by my count, there were at least three incidents of vehicular assault on police cars, at least two of malicious property damage (in the park) and at least one narrow escape by a civilian (also in the park), and the guy clearly wasn't done yet. To a minimum of seven felonies, including the original charge of stealing the truck (he didn't have permission to take it, so it was stolen), one must add 'stupidity with felony priors'. Both father and son sound like wack jobs, so something like this was probably inevitable. At least he's off the street for good, so the world is just a bit safer. Sad, but there it is.

19 year olds are moron, so they should be allowed to kill with impunity?  And those who claim that shooting the tires off of a truck will instantly immobilize it are what... geniuses?

James Comstock refused to buy a pack of cigarettes for his 19-year-old son, Tyler, and now he’s planning his son’s funeral.

“He took off with my truck. I call the police, and they kill him,” James Comstock told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday. “It was over a damn pack of cigarettes. I wouldn’t buy him none.

“And I lose my son for that.”

Comstock said he’s outraged police shot and killed his son Monday morning on Iowa State University’s campus.

Police began pursuing Tyler Comstock of Boone after his father reported the truck stolen. The truck belonged to a lawn care company.

Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson pursued Comstock into the heart of ISU’s campus. During the chase, Comstock rammed McPherson’s car. The truck eventually stopped, but Comstock revved the engine and refused orders to turn it off.

McPherson fired six shots into the truck. Comstock died from two gunshot wounds, according to the Iowa state medical examiner’s office.

This is just PHUCKED up...like the kid in the streetcar in toronto, this is cops with itchy fingers, when they think someone might have a gun..
and a dumb kid, who died, because he wouldnt stop..
THe cops were told by dispatch twice to back off, that they knew the situation/suspect and father.

    The kid stole a car.

    It was reported stolen.

    Police responded appropriately.

The kid didn't relinquish the car when the police demanded he do so.

    He's now dead.

    That's what happens.

And in what country do the police just sit there and wait until the  person driving the vehicle as a weapon decides they are done?

No, it was a leading question, an irrelevant one, and a cretinous one to boot.

In no country I can think of would it be policy just to let someone drive a car around smashing up things, and perhaps even people. But this kind of event - of a tearaway youth taking a car and spinning around madly in it - happens as a daily event here in the UK. However, the culprit rarely ends up shot and killed. So, my turn to ask a gormless question: why do you think that is?

Does the "tearaway youth" also ram police cars, nearly hit civilians, and threaten further use of the vehicle as a weapon once pinned down?

Happens all the time here to, but those stories don't make the papers or the internet. So you folks across the pond never hear about it. Then when something unusual happens you try to claim that is the way it always is over here. Why do you think that is?
