ROFL... and the fun never ends.

SO when you do the upgrade to Win 8.1, it apparently wants to INSIST that you give it a microsoft live mail account (so they can steal all your data). The really funny thing is I finally, in frustration, gave it:

[email protected]
password: fuckyou

At which point i got a message saying, "Someone has tried to log into this account too many times and it has been suspended"... then the installer moved me right along.

LOL....no doubt :)

(Hence my previous post :) )

Heh... let's just be thankful that I don't have multiple network adapters. On the bright side, the UEFI bios means I get the joy of potentially bricking my $500 laptop just because I want a real OS installed.

Ubuntu has a uefi compatible version. Was not a problem to convert a win8 desktop to it.

It's supposed to be fixed in Kubuntu 13.10. By extension I would assume Ubuntu 13.10 too.

I'd wait a month just to make sure that any problems are solved. You can search for your particular model on the Ubuntu/Kubuntu forums.

The obvious question, of course, is why the FTC allowed Microsoft to decide what is and is not an allowable operating system. Am I the only person who sees a potential problem with that?

They didn't. The FTC is not involved in any way. The problem is the secure bootloader built into UEFI which Microsoft requires, for any computer certified for Win8, to have a Microsoft private key. However secure boot can be disabled, except AIUI on ARM based systems.

oh fuck! Don't get me started! My laptop died last month and I had to buy a new one. Well like you, I was forced into Win8. It was all they offered. And I absolutely HATE HATE HATE it!!!! I can't even stress enough how much I hate it. It's horrible. It's beyond horrible.

I'm still trying to get all the crap worked out of it so it will work the way I want.

It also keeps fucking up my internet connection. I never once had a problem with connections until I Win 8. Every 20 mins or so it disconnects me and I have to run diagnostics to get it to reconnect. Even then, it doesn't always work. It keeps telling me I don't have a default gateway but yet the next time I run diagnostics, it works. And yeah, I've reset the modem and router and everything in between. I'm so friggin tired of dealing with it.

Master feels I should return the computer but as I told him, it's not the computer. It's windows 8. I plan on getting my hands on windows 7 again and reinstalling it on this computer.

To anyone thinking of installing windows 8, DON'T!!!! FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T!!!!

ETA: HA! Just as I finished this, my connection went down yet AGAIN! I think Microsoft is following me.

OK, don't quote me on this because I'm dragging an answer back out of google that wasn't the one I was looking for. But I swear I read some consistent series of problems with network connectivity and certain laptops with win8. The implication there is that it's a bad driver for a certain wireless chipset. Yeah, win7 with it's different drivers would almost certainly solve the problem AND give microsoft less direct access to your entire life.

Have you pondered unix though? Honestly, the only thing that keeps me in windows is photoshop. And I may yet give up completely and just run a copy of windows in VM just for the handful of apps I need that are windows only. But if you're just doing basic office stuff & web browsing and the like there there's unix answers out there which are secure, free, reliable, and some which are specifically designed to be comfortable for the windows user.

Yeah, I tried the drivers thing. Didn't work. Tried all kinds of settings from all the suggestions I've found online too didn't work. Just tried a few more settings a few minutes ago and hoping it fixed the problem. We'll see how long I stay connected.

Unfortunately, my college classes rely on Windows since I take them online. Plus I work with SharePoint for my job and so windows is a requirement. I never minded windows until xp. But even that wasn't as bad as this is.

Microsoft is a front organization for the borg.

Humanity has a chance, then. One would expect that the Borg would come up with a more competent organization than M$ (as obnoxious as they are, they are about as efficient and intelligent as any conference room full of stuffed suits engaging in groupthink), but all the better for us.

Now Apple, if the Borg were to choose them as a front organization... people would be camping out to be assimilated on release night.

Windows 8.1 doesn't "fix" Windows 8....it adds the start button (kind of), which is a "shell" (an overlay) and a few other things.

The lack of a start button was definitely one of the things that needed fixing.

Hmm... from what I read, windows 8.1 update makes the startmenu button move you back over to the metro screen. Where does it take you?
I prefer the Start Menu 8 button from IObit, which is a shell that looks closer to the windows 7 start.

Yeah, I like the IObit one too. I put that on my computer a few days ago. It looks and feels like the old one.

I understand that GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a decent replacement for Photoshop. Bonus: They won't keep an easily compromised database of your passwords. Adobe Leak

Have you tried Classic Shell? I've been using that on my Win 7 computer for years now. It renders the Start Menu XP-like. They do one for Win 8, apparently, though I've no idea how well that works.

No one "forced" you in to Windows 8....Win 7 professional (and all underlings) are still available.

Vista is also still available.

Yeah I could buy Windows 7 again for this new computer but ya know, that costs money. Unfortunately when I bought my new laptop they only offered windows 8. Said they no longer offer new laptops with anything other than Windows 8.

GIMP is an adequate paint program at the hobbyist level... maybe even enthusiast level. My needs are professional. Color management, in particular, is where all other tools have failed me in the past... totally.

Oh, and I installed the windows 8.1 update on Carol's laptop. So now every time it tries to print it thinks the print job failed yet it prints just fine. Holy crap it's hard to believe they sell this stuff. And I still haven't rooted out all the privacy issues yet.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I got a laptop today after being without anything but a phone for over a month. I was ready to throw the computer after less than a half hour. The start button non-existent, and it only took me a half hour to figure out how to even get to the control panel. It took me longer to figure out how to open the 2 programs I had installed. I still havent found ANY kind of notepad, until I get my Office installed tomorrow, I finally pasted a copy of what I had sent to someone in an email to myself, because my dumb ass couldnt figure out where to put it otherwise to keep the record.

I finally figured out how to not go to the sides and have internet explorer etc open when I didn't even want to open the damn thing at that time.

Dell sucks ass!

Plus I needed a new laptop that very night that mine died so that I could get my school assignments done.

XP is still by far the best of the Windows OS. So, naturally, they've stopped doing security updates for it.

FR~

I've seen Win8 and won't touch it with a barge pole!
It's hideous. There's no other words for it.

When I need to switch from XP Pro I'll go with Win7 Ultimate - never ever Win8.
If I ever get a laptop for myself, it'll also get splatted with Win7 right off the bat - I won't even boot Win8.

LW: you have mail :)
