Earlier this week, a server at a restaurant in Bridgewater, NJ looked at a check to see that the family she had just served completely stiffed her on the tip. And the awful thing was the reason the diner wrote on the check: "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life."

Server Dayna Morales sent the check to Have a Gay Day, which posted the offensive check on their Facebook page. Morales, who works at Gallop Asian Bistro, also revealed that when she got to their table, "NEVER in a million years did I think this would happen. Not only was it a family with two kids, but as I introduce myself and tell them my name is Dayna—the mom proceeds to look at me and say 'oh I thought you were gonna say your name is Dan. You sure surprised us!'"

Morales, who has served in the U.S. Marine Corps, never told the customers that she was gay. She told Have a Gay Day, "I am THOROUGHLY offended mad pissed off and hurt that THIS is what her kids will grow up learning and that I served in the Marines to keep ignorant people like them free. Sorry lady but I don't agree with YOUR lifestyle and the way you're raising your kids but you didn't see me throwing that in your face and giving you shitty service. Keep your damn mouth shut and pray we never cross paths again."

She shared her shock with WABC 7, explaining, "It wasn't he said, she said. They actually wrote it, proof they said it."

This diner is a terrible, terrible person.

Morales said on Facebook, "Thanks everyone for your support—it took very fiber of my being not to spit in their food and say something. (Not gonna lie if kids weren't there it would of been a totally different story)."

Two things I found interesting about that article.
One, that they based their opinion about her lifestyle based on her hair/appearance.
Two, they didn't object to being served by her, they objected to tipping.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 2:07:46 AM)

Well obviously if they just withhold a few dollars from her, she'll see the error of her ways and turn straight and/or adopt a more 'feminine' haircut.

sloguy02246 -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 9:32:17 AM)

Bill Maher included this incident during his "New Rules" segment at the end of Friday's Real Time show on HBO.
Basically he mocked the people who do these types of things as cheap bastards who use their "religious beliefs" as a basis for stiffing wait staff.

LadyPact -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 9:48:42 AM)

How exceptionally disappointing that, in this day and age, somebody would do such a thing. Didn't even have the balls to say it themselves. Just wrote it on the check.

njlauren -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 9:50:23 AM)

So much for "Christian" compassion, about love the sin and hate the sinner, etc..religious people complain that they are targeted for abuse, are called intolerant and mean and such, but where is the outrage for them at this stupid, stupid family? Evangelicals claim to be spreading the love of God, yet they are routinely like this, judgmental, mean, etc.

It is funny, years ago there was a case where some of the morality police were able to pressure a hotel into canceling a leather event called "Beat Me in St. Louis", from a Howard Johnson's hotel there (the event had the whole hotel booked, so no 'vanillas' would be put out). I got involved (turns out the corporate parent of Howard Johnson's hotels literally is in my back yard), and the hotel chain as a result issued rules to their hotels telling them not to ever do what the hotel in St. Louis did, that their basic credo was as long as the groups activities were legal and were willing to be accommodating when concerns about mixing with others in the hotel were concerned i.e being discrete where needed, everyone was welcome.I spoke to someone at the headquarters (literally made an appointment to talk to them) and the woman laughed, said they got feedback from employees at the hotel, who said the leather people were fun to work with, were good tippers and were just great people. Meanwhile, not long before, some evangelical conference was there,and the employees said that they never worked with a nastier group of people, complained about everything, and often refused to tip, claiming that a good job done is reward enough and other BS......

When I see things like this, it just makes me so incredibly angry. I could, and have (not here), write pages worth of ranting.
I just don't understand the logic in their thinking, or lack thereof.

UllrsIshtar -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 6:36:54 PM)

There is something not right about this story. Dayna (the server) posted on Facebook in response to people supporting here: "Dayna xxxx: Thanks everyone for your support - it took very fiber of my being not to spit in their food and say something. (Not gonna lie if kids weren't there it would of been a totally different story)" which doesn't make any sense at all.

Why would she want to spit in people's food (presumably at a point in time where she had the change to spit in the food... i.e. BEFORE they ate and got the check) in response to a comment on the check she couldn't possible have seen yet while actually serving them food?

Not saying that the diners aren't homophobic idiots, but that doesn't change the fact that there is more to this story than Dayna is stating.

xxblushesxx -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 6:47:16 PM)

Yep. The spit in the food comment is grounds for firing (imo)  I understand the restaurant owner standing behind her, but not after that. As a patron, it would keep me from ever eating in that restaurant.

As far as people bashing Christians, the customers never claimed to be Christians, so, we can't assume they consider themselves as such. (even if they do, they are not)

sloguy02246 -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/17/2013 7:14:07 PM)

According to Maher, what folks like these never seem to understand is that by not tipping a waiter because of his sexual orientation, it doesn't mean the waiter will now want to start putting his penis in a vagina.
However, he may well now want to put his penis in their pasta primavera. [sm=modxiiswatching.gif]

Bill Maher BLASTS selfish Christian hypocrites who don't tip waiters

On Friday night, Bill Maher delivered a great New Rule blasting conservatives who call themselves Christians, and yet show themselves to be little more than selfish assholes, notably when it comes to tipping the wait staff.

And finally, New Rule: It's OK if you don't want to feed the hungry, or heal the sick, or house the homeless. Just don't say you're doing it for their own good. Don't say you'd like to help people, but your hands are tied because if you did, it would cause a culture of dependency, or go against the Bible, or worst of all, rob them of their freedom... to be sick and hungry.

Just admit you're selfish, and based on how little your beliefs mirror the actual teachings of Jesus, you might as well claim to worship Despicable Me.

[Other examples]

I don't know what the snake-handlers have against the food-handlers, or when restaurant receipts became the new bully pulpit, but there was another story recently, this one from Kansas, where instead of a tip, a Christian family left their server, who they knew was gay, this note:

Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience top you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours.

[image]http://s3.amazonaws.com/dk-production/images/56994/large/MaherTipping-god.jpg[/image]

Note they repeat the phrase "not share", to really drive home that they've absorbed the message of Jesus.

Given that the US is overwhelmingly Chrisitian and /or from Christian roots, it doesn't take a leap of faith to assume they probably were Christian, plus IME when people use terms like "lifestyle" to describe gays, they are Christian. As far as saying that "even if they consider themselves Christian, they aren't") that is a cop out claim, trying to deflect from the fact that Christianity has been one of the biggest sources of homophobia, especially in the US, it is likely that the GOP will block attempts to pass ENDA in the house, and it doesn't take a genius to know why, it is because the GOP as a whole caters to the Christian right, specifically the evangelical and orthodox Catholic types. More importantly, I live not far from Bridgewater, and according to a local paper who looked into it, the family that didn't leave the tip are members of an evangelical Christian church that unfortunately soil the landscape even around here (general response to gays getting married "Yeah, so?"...from the men, it is mostly "okay, they can share the suffering" from the women "that's nice, the gay guys must put on a beautiful wedding").

xxblushesxx -> RE: -=No tip for waitress, cause she's gay=- (11/18/2013 1:36:46 AM)

Huh? Christ taught love above all things. That's why I say they are not Christian. If they were, they would not be judgmental assholes. They can call themselves whatever they like, but I contend they are no more true Christians than my cat is a pineapple. (my cat is not a pineapple, btw) But since they didn't play the Christian card, (surprisingly) we can't do it for them.

Have you read St. Paul's letters? To be fair, it's arguable that he was no kind of Christian, either. My late wife used to call the Church "the Pauline Heresy."

I am not a follower of Paul. (aka Saul)

But really my point was that the cheap people who ripped this waitress off (imo) and added (literally) insult to injury never brought Christianity into it, so we can't assume that's what the issue is. (and even if it was, it's a small minded hateful, skewed version of what being a follower of Christ is supposed to mean.)

If it would bother their conscience to tip a server if they disapprove of their lifestyle, why wouldn't it bother their conscience to eat there at all? Why wouldn't they just get up and leave right away? How could they "in good conscience" allow themselves to be served by someone whose lifestyle they disapprove of?

It seems rather hypocritical and dishonest to continue to accept service from this individual and restaurant when they had no intention of tipping.

Christianity as my religion. Those ppl's actions were NOT Christian at all.
That lady needs some Jesus in her life!
Poor kids, growin up...seeing that hate.

Yes they were assholes. They are obviously bigoted toward gays. They look at the actions of one and apply it to the whole group. And we all know that is wrong. To turn around and try to paint all christians as hateful because of this is just as wrong. Now there were all kinds of things you could have said about the couple who actually did this, but instead you felt to use this to further your hatred towards christians. How are you any better than they are?

I wondered about that also. I have a teacher with really short hair who dresses mainly in mens suits. If I had never talked to her, I would assume she was gay. But I have talked to her and met her husband so I know she isn't. My guess is had she been their waitress they would have pulled the same shit. As to them objecting, they were probably tickled pink. They saw it as a ready made excuse to stiff the waitress and save a few bucks. Just a shame there isn't a website out there to post their pics. That way other servers could watch for them.
