Jlf, some of the people I admire most have chosen their family members without respect to blood relation. I have (had) 'adopted' sisters, moms, dads, and brothers. It fills the space for me left by blood relatives dying or my not wanting to connect with them in the first place.

Carry on. You're doing it right and that 'nice subbie' is a confused, misguided person who probably struggles with her toxic, unpleasant blood relatives then pats herself on the back about it because they are 'family'.

The definition of 'family' is unique to each person. Love your peeps, wherever they came from.

But, I am sure you can see that your living arrangements and the associated back story are unusual?

Assuming that you do, then it's not unreasonable for someone to be put off by it all.
