Oh no! Peon that's not how it should work according to elements on the Right. Here's the deal:

According to the Right, you give them nominal equality under the law, and in return, they forget everything that has happened, every injustice, every exclusion, every outrage, every indignity. They will forgive those who oppressed them everything and then we can all live happily ever after. They will forgive all the murders, lynchings rapes imprisonments, tortures, kidnappings etc just as they will forgive and forget that the Right will have opposed their emancipation every inch of the way. The slate is magically wiped clean.

And of course no one has to surrender a cents worth of the gains accrued under the old system of privilege. There's absolutely no need for any social programs or legislation to remedy the lingering effects of previous injustices - we are all going to be treated strictly on our merits from now on. Any problems or difficulties will be their fault of course, because basically they are ungrateful and lazy and want everything on a platter. [/sarcasm]

Apparently this is all going to happen on its own, magically you might say, or so these recently converted non-racist elements on the Right would have it.

Anyone able to truly forgive their oppressors and seek genuine peace and reconciliation is acting very much against the norm of the human race (vindictive little snots that we usually are) and therefore is a radical. We need more radicals like him. May whatever god there may be grant him peace.

But oh, I forgot, he wasn't perfect. He actually said a few nasty things about whites once or twice. That cancels out all the good he did. I hope he burns in Hell.

(Although I shouldn't have to point it out, history has demonstrated to me that I must . . . yes folks, that second paragraph is sarcasm.)

The logic in that quote is faulty. If one can learn to hate but must be taught to love, logic dictates that hate comes more naturally.

Furthermore, I reject that and your pathetically veiled attempt at calling me hateful. You don't have the first clue about me or how I live so try selling that shit to someone who owns a farm.

I call a spade a spade. I call out white racists, also. Mandela was a black supremist. While that fits in in the Pablum-puking world, that turd won't flush in my bowl.

Look at what South Africa transformed into under his leadership (and try to look through a non-jaundiced eye). It went from Apartheid to "screw whitey like he's screwed us for years". That's not "balancing the scales"; that's starting a pendulum to motion.

The question most often asked about Mr. Mandela was how, after whites had systematically humiliated his people, tortured and murdered many of his friends, and cast him into prison for 27 years, he could be so evidently free of spite.

The government he formed when he finally won the chance was an improbable fusion of races and beliefs, including many of his former oppressors. When he became president, he invited one of his white wardens to the inauguration. Mr. Mandela overcame a personal mistrust bordering on loathing to share both power and a Nobel Peace Prize with the white president who preceded him, F. W. de Klerk.

And as president, from 1994 to 1999, he devoted much energy to moderating the bitterness of his black electorate and to reassuring whites with fears of vengeance.

The explanation for his absence of rancor, at least in part, is that Mr. Mandela was that rarity among revolutionaries and moral dissidents: a capable statesman, comfortable with compromise and impatient with the doctrinaire.

When the question was put to Mr. Mandela in an interview for this obituary in 2007 — after such barbarous torment, how do you keep hatred in check? — his answer was almost dismissive: Hating clouds the mind. It gets in the way of strategy. Leaders cannot afford to hate.

I don't think it's about that, Yachtie, whether we're talking of the Left or of the Right. It's about what we could reasonably expect a viciously subjugated people to be like, once freed. Likewise the politicians who lead them. A weak, evil man in Mandela's position *could*, post-revolution, have used the whites as scapegoats for every social ill that cropped up (and there would have been, and was in SA, lots of them). Mugabe did this; Mandela didn't.

South Africa could look horrifically worse today had lesser men than Mandela been at the forefront. God knows we have plenty of examples in history of the hideous bloodbaths that have followed revolutions. To be honest, I was amazed as year after year went by after 1994 without any stories of mass atrocities hitting the headlines. I kept waiting for it to happen - but it never did happen.
