Is anyone still in contact with SimplyMichael? If so, what are the chances of him being persuaded to return?

From what he's told Me, none.

That last part I knew. [;)]

There's been an awful lot on this thread to say that new people don't stay because they get treated so harshly on the forums.

But, the Introduction forums prove that false. It's a forum where everyone is required to be nice, so they are. How many of those posters made one post, where they were welcomed (nicely) to the forums.....and they've never made another post?

Some people complain that we coddle new posters too much and some people complain that regulars are too mean. Staff does enforce a welcoming and constructive attitude in the Introduce Yourself forum.

We don't want to chase new posters away but we don't want to coddle them either. Please share your thoughts.

What's the motive for the retention? Quality or quantity (or something else) because my ideas would be different depending on that answer.

Ditto, but time might change his mind. And the even weaker quality of the discussions on Fet...

VideoAdminGamma -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/19/2013 2:12:46 PM)

Quality.

Better topics with substance will come mostly from people asking questions. New members ask a lot more questions, which then allows current members to share their knowledge. This is an area I agree with RedMagic on, quality material will stand the test of time and drama topics will eventually burn out and often show some of the worst qualities of people.

A test program that I will be starting mid January will reveal more on this I hope.

Thanks for being a part of CollarMe,
Gamma

PeonForHer -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/19/2013 2:20:47 PM)

I look forward to that test program. My feeling is that those who turn up here and are . . . shall we call them 'undesirables' . . . won't last even in a forum where politeness and friendliness are obligatory. On the other hand, some others who are basically good people, albeit a little sensitive, might well be more likely to stick around.

What the hell. At the very least, it'll be a place where people can practise being well-mannered, to see what it feels like. [;)]

FR

The best way to detain new posters is to lock them up.

I never introduced myself. I just teleported in, and started to open your skulls and to inspect their contents.

It's funny. I've noticed a subtle, but definite difference in the posting in other Forums since this thread was started. Perhaps this discussion, no matter which end of the spectrum our opinions lie, has made us a little more "aware" that our words have weight.
Without scrolling through the whole thread to find out who mentioned this, is it possible we are thinking a little longer before hitting the "ok" button?

I noticed that too! its all good

One thing you could do is to just let in females for a while until things get a little more even.
Every new female in here complains about the "dozens and dozens of guys" that overflow their mailboxes.

Quality.

Then I would suggest a marketing strategy. Take some quality threads or questions and approach bloggers and the hosts or owners of quality websites and ask them
to include the featured thread or question along with a link to Collarme. Any thread that is featured on a website could reciprocate a quality article from that website
and drive traffic to both sites. Collarme members themselves could offer suggestions on which blogs and sites they'd like to see
partnership here and then some team members or diplomatic types could make the approach to the blogger/website owner. Sites like Literotica (I don't go there
so not sure of spelling) might be a site that could be considered or Steels site, the Frugal site. I'm not up on the trending stuff but maybe others know of
sites where there's perhaps some writing but no forum or chat format and would be happy to partner their memberships with a discussion type of forum.

Another marketing strategy would be to offer a 'guest' thread on specific topics. For example.. ask a kinky lawyer about how contracts work in the 'legal' world as a
way to get rid of some of the porn fantasy and get the down low on the truth behind certain topics. KAP might be a good source to find guest thread starters.

Also, some kind of 'newbies nest' might be helpful as well with a sticky thread were newbies could request for topics then the newbies nest mother/father bird
could pose those requests or questions in a way that will garner answers rather than bashing because a question might be considered wank fodder or something
along those lines. I have often thought that if an OP had only phrased a question differently, responses would have been much more helpful not just for OP
but for the lurkers as well. I'm thinking of a place where there are only questions asked.. then those are worded and put into General BDSM (or another forum)
by one of the many word-smiths we already have on the site. If a newbie didn't want to pose the question directly, they could also just go to the newbie nest parent
and email them as well and still get their questions put into the General BDSM forum without 'outing' themselves as the questioner.

Just a few things off the top of my head.

SimplyMichael -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/20/2013 4:12:46 AM)

A few of you know why I loved CM and oddly enough the same person is part of why I left. No, I am not back but I thought I would put my 2 cents in.

Most of us left because of the behavior of the moderators...

This site encourages fake profiles, encourages all the worst of commercial kink.

Fet sucks but ANYTHING is better than how this place is and will be run.

But I would SO love to be proven wrong as...fet sucks.

Bye.

You know things I don't know Michael but what I do know is, you were around on here for a long time and I enjoyed your posts. I still enjoy your posts on the other side.

New management of the forums so that should change.

The forum staff has no influence what so ever over the main/sister site.

Me, Chi, Rho and Omni will hopefully prove you wrong. If you have specifics you would like to share, so that they can be added to our list of things to address, please fell free to contact me.

Thanks,

That would work, but it would also involve making an effort.
Which is probably exactly the reason why the mods are unlikely to do anything of the sort, especially when it's easier to change one of the member titles, and then pretend that they've achieved something constructive...

I don't think it's fair to blame the mods for the stagnant nature of the site. They're volunteers - anything which takes a significant extra investment of time or money comes down to the site owners.

The mods do a thankless job and get a lot of criticism for it. I'm grateful for them - I sure as hell wouldn't want to do it.
