DesFIP -> RE: What can we do to [train] new posters? (12/18/2013 10:46:04 AM)

I'm not fond of the search feature here either. But if I can't find something, then I'll say that I did try to search for it and could someone else do so if they are better at navigating it.

What that does is say that I didn't expect to be spoon fed, I just hit a snag.

The other thing, re the ebay varying cultures, is that what some of you see as unacceptable snark is viewed by others of us as how to talk to friends. There is no one accepted culture here. Rudeness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Myself, I stick to the mod's view which I've seen expressed as saying "that's a stupid idea" is not a personal attack, but saying "you're stupid" is. And which brings me to the point that too many newbies think anyone disagreeing with them are issuing ad hominem attacks. And that's just not so.

I have to say that I actually don't think you're a particularly abrasive poster nor do I think you come across badly in text. While you can be brusque (often necessarily so), I see you as one of the more level headed and calm posters on here. You certainly focus a lot more on issues when you disagree, then you do people. And I've very rarely seen you join the "pile on".

No, LadyPact very rarely joins in with the 'pile ons'. I remember when I first came to these forums and was in a very fragile state of mind (behind the jokes and the blarney, of course). She stood out as one of the very few kind, polite and patient ones. Which, actually, made me think, "Ah - this is what a femdom can be".

iaminigo -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/18/2013 11:29:31 AM)

As a newbie to CollarChat, but not to forums or CM in general, I have to say that the problem with attracting newbies here has everything to do with the "veterans." I saw a suggestion to remove post counts - I think that's a great idea. Some of the people who have been here for a long time have found what they liked and now enforce compliance through snarkiness and nastiness. They feel like longevity means some sort of status. I disagree. If you want new blood you have to be willing to accept change - not keep referring people to search and ancient discussions that worked for someone else.

Forums should be fun, lively, and interesting - not a rigorously guarded process that must satisfy the people who have been here for years.

The old guard here seems terrified of change, or repeating things they've already heard. That will absolutely stifle new people. You have to pick - status for veterans or a welcoming atmosphere for newbies. The current situation has lead to one extreme, and you're asking those same people how to address the problem...

~general reply to the title of the thread~

Don't use thumbtacks, tape, or glue when hanging
Don't roll your poster as it puts unneeded stress on the paper
When transporting a new poster it is recommended to put them in a blueprint folder or other sort of flat carrying medium such as an art portfolio
If you really want to get life out of your new posters, frame them immediately. This will not only allow you to transport them safely, but will also allow you to re-decorate any room without doing any damage to the paper.

PeonForHer -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/18/2013 11:36:24 AM)

Right, that was quite funny. Well, I liked it anyway. But be warned, TL: you have a beard. The phrases 'people in glass houses' and 'throwing stones' spring to mind. ;-)

PeonForHer -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/18/2013 11:38:06 AM)

Actually - if you like throats, why do you cover yours with a beard?

- Sorry, back to the thread topic.

enforce compliance

Wait, what? How can words typed on an internet forum force you to do anything? Unless you care more about phony status than you say you do.

I piss off longtime posters on a regular basis. And you know what? Too bad for them.

wnyThroatLover -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/18/2013 11:46:57 AM)

I'm not entirely sure what my face-rodent has to do with posters...

Personally I want to keep my Clockwork Orange and Fight Club theater posters in pristine condition and I figured I would share some advice for anyone who wanted it!

By the way...I like other people's throats...it's not any fun for me to play with my own...and really, I can't bend over that far...

momndaughter -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/18/2013 11:50:44 AM)

I'm by no means new, but I very rarely post... Simply because there are those who enjoy flaming, arguing, contradicting and belittling almost anything that's not their opinion.
Since I very rarely post, I'm labelled as new and inexperienced.
Since I don't enjoy fuelling the flame of somebody's ego, I usually keep quiet or just walk away SMH.. Thus "starving them of the oxygen of publicity", to quote the Iron Lady.
The genuinely new folks speak up, get insulted, walk away and don't come back.

That, I believe, is the problem... The solution is less simple. The flamers and insulters are "old hands", solidly entrenched, and get off on showing off how clever they are,in running off the impudent upstarts.
Time, and attrition, may be the answers... Eventually, new people won't come here any more, and the old hands can roar and posture at each other.. They won't even notice that somebody locked them in.

MasterCaneman -> RE: What can we do to retain new posters? (12/18/2013 12:09:45 PM)

I've been following this thread for a bit now and here's my two cents. Regarding the trite "Welcome to the discussion side of the board" is what I feel a nice way to remind a new poster that this isn't just another place to stick their personal ad. I was guilty of this my first post because I skimmed the TOS when I landed here, just like many of the ones who came after me. I got slammed by a few of the older posters, but you know what? I learned from it.

Oh yeah, I got cocky and pig-piled on some hapless or clueless ones, got a couple gold letters, and learned some more. Now, I do try to be a bit more accommodating to newbies because I did the same dumb things. Unfortunately, any solution I could come up with would involve some coding and would probably piss off a lot of people because it'd make certain things a requirement to read before making a post, so that's out. One would be to require a mandatory read-through with both a quiz and a captcha at the end to prove understanding of the rules. It won't happen, so there's that.

I like the 'mentor' idea, but again, the site would have to have a ready and willing supply of volunteers to handhold a new poster through the first few steps, another impossibility. There will always be those who feel that the rules don't apply to them, and they will continue to drop weird and wild initial messages here, and the mentors would have their hands full dealing with them. There will always be the rent-day's due findommes posting teasers here, followed by the no-more-findomme guys, and the dudes who are OD-ing on femdom porn thinking this is an avenue to fulfill their fantasies.

I think the only way for new posters to remain is for the rest of us to think a little bit longer before pressing the "OK" button on a post. I know there's a number of times I wished I'd previewed what I wrote better, but what's done is done. No coding, mentors, or other changes needed. Yeah, I would love to savage some of the idiots who come on here thinking it's another means of achieving their off-beat goals, but as of late, I've taken to not replying at all or being very circumspect in what I write. Not out of fear of another gold letter, but because what I write here becomes a part of the history of this site, and I don't want an old posting of mine dragged out to point out what an idiot I was.

Conversely, new posters should be aware that the denizens of this particular spot on the web aren't the nicest of people at times. We are either practicing or have practiced, a form of social interaction that involves pain, violence, and other nasty things to other people, all in the name of hedonistic pleasures. They have to expect a certain level of nastiness as it's part of the scene as I see it. I don't want to see this board become "CoddleMe". Compared to some boards I'm on or have been on, this place is pretty tame.

wnyTL was being amusing, FD. At least, I thought him so. Stop being bad-tempered and intolerant. Leave that to the Americans - they do it much better than us. ;-)

Expecting people to read the ToS and CoC before making their first post is kinda silly. Do you read the software license agreements on the apps you install?

People want to see what kind of responses they get, and how they like it before deciding whether they want to bother reading all that stuff.

LOLwut? This has got to be the most ridiculous argument I've ever seen.

You're saying that people who are too lazy to read the TOS and Guidelines and then get spanked when they violate them are victims who are being bullied by the people who did spend the 10-20 minutes required to read the information provided? Logic, do you even? SMDH.

If the baby puts the hand in the pretty blue flame on the stove, is not knowing a reason that the baby should not be burned?

And here the rest of the crew is 18 + as was signed along with everything else.  No blue flame exceptions for you.

Why is that?
So if you bought something you'd never used before, you don't bother reading the instructions?
Eeeeek. How naive! An accident waiting to happen.
Oh, wait... you know everything. Got all the answers. Right? [sm=ofcourse.gif]

Ummmm.... Yes!
It's a requirement.

And for those that don't, and end up getting something they didn't bargain for - tough shit IMHO.

So if you bought a parachute, you'd just jump out the plane without checking it thoroughly and completely first??
Jeeez. How irresponsible.

Perhaps, halfway down 10,000ft of freefall when you discover there's no ripcord, you'd think twice about what you've said.

True, but ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse for breaking the law. I'll be honest in saying that I haven't bothered reading the ORS (Oregon Revised Statute). But just because I haven't bothered to read it does not mean that the various police agencies Id potentially face if I break a rule is going to buy my "gee, Officer...I didn't know that <fill in the blank> was illegal" defense as I try to talk my way out of a possible ticket.

They post the TOS here for a reason. If you are not inclined to read it before you post, you should still be held to the same standard as those who do bother reading it. Ignorance, laziness, or "it just doesn't apply to me because I'm super special" isn't an excuse.
