My high school years were in the late 70s. My poor small town french Catholic mother was horrified by my choice of pants. To say they were tight is a total understatement. I had to lay on my bed, insert a wire hanger in the zipper pull and yaaaank. The top was tight but was covered by an open lumberjack shirt. But then, I fit into size 28 to 30 inch waisted jeans.

At least no skirts were involved, you couldn't pay me enough to wear that or a dress. High top cotton Nike with the tongue sticking out and the jeans tucked in were also "de rigueur". Ahhh, to know it all at 17.

I admit I'm one of those people who runs around in the winter in shorts and tshirts. Why? Because I am going through The Change and I'm constantly sweating to the point of looking like I just stepped out of the shower. Anything heavier and I feel like I'm going to overheat. If I could get away with sandals without getting frostbite, I definitely would!

You get a pass on that one. My woman is going through that, and for someone who usually sleeps under a down comforter in August, to see her going out in a thin sweater on a 20 degree day was a shocker. It's those durn kids I'm talking about. Where I live, we sometimes see extreme winter weather, and it doesn't take but twenty minutes outside to start doing damage. For the frostbite concerns, Crocs & wool-blend socks. She swears by 'em when she's feeling the heat.

I forgot about that. We would put on new jeans, fill the tub up with hot water and sit in it until the pants were molded to us. Letting them dry on us to make sure they fit tight enough. And yes, if you could zip them standing up, they were too loose.

What gets me now is these little dumbasses run around in the winter wearing shorts and friggin' sandals. Even when I was young, dumb and underdressed, at the very least I had long pants, shoes, and socks. (okay, steel-toed logging boots for when I hit the mosh pit, but still). The other day, it was fourteen degrees and the boss's son was on the ATV plowing the sidewalk in cargo shorts, sneakers, and a parka. Didn't phase the idiot a bit.

The guy next door to me was out during the last snowstorm in shorts and flip flops, too. You could also smell the booze on him even when he was in the middle of the street.

And then when the finally fit "right", pulling the zipper tab with that farkin metal hanger would leave deeeeeep grooves in your fingers. O that was painful, but you damned well knew they looked good on you!
