So I'm scanning some headlines today, and of course, seeing that the dreaded Polar Vortex is coming to kill us all, and the cold is like nothing anyone has ever encountered before (as long as they are under 12 or so).

The story I pulled up was focusing on Minneapolis, and the barrel-bottom scraped quote that made me laugh out loud was when they found someone to say they had never heard of schools closing because of cold had moved to city a whole 6 years ago.

The media has a new buzz-term to play with, and they are running with it, but the fact that it gets damn cold in January, and some years it gets really damn cold in January isn't exactly breaking news.

No politics. No AGW debate. What's the most over the top news coverage of the cold weather you have seen?

FR:
It is very weird weather.
At this moment, it is still warmer in Maine where my (step)mom lives than it is here, and for part of the day, where I live (in MA) was warmer than the majority of the country, including Southern CA.
The high today in New Orleans was 41F.
It got up to 55 here.

I'm in SE Texas and it is getting down to 15F tonight. I just don't understand why we are so far south and still get the sting of this winter weather crap.

Don't know how over the top this story is but i was reading one about the guy who made a truck out of ice. I'm too lazy to look for the link.

According to the text I received from My daughter, it was colder for her in GA than it was here in AK.

The only thing I've noticed specifically about the "Polar Vortex" was a little thing on Yahell that says that this cold weather is caused by warmer temperatures in the arctic. I read it and was still scratching my head, afterward.

However, in general, have you noticed that any time it rains heavier than a heavy drizzle, the last couple of years, it's a "super storm"?

The township I live in right now was flooded so badly in '72 that Tricky Dicky came for a visit. The house in which I reside was filled with water up to the second floor.

Does anybody remember "Irene", late August, a couple of years back? My uncle lives in Bergen County at the conflux of two rivers. He lives, literally, 75-100 feet from the river bank. His basement was wiped out and all the floors on the first floor had to be replaced. The media went nuts. "Irene is the first 'Super Storm' to hit our area in ..."

What they neglected to mention was that a dam, 3 miles up river in NY state broke that weekend, during the storm which was what really caused the flooding. I still don't think the shit was coincidence but, the fact that it was ignored does raise the hackles.

The media was much more concerned with a return to the glory days of "yellow journalism" with an alarmist bent.

I think it continues, today. All we have to do is notice it.

~FR~

I moved down to Virginia a couple of years ago because I got sick of snow. I met a friend here (Naval Reservist) and he just shipped of to Bahrain tp relieve some troops for the holidays.

Text message I sent him tonight: You picked the right time to leave the country because it is cold as balls here!

Next time I talk to a recruiter I am going to be DAMNED FIRM about the "some place with palm trees" message. No, I'm, going to go one better. "I want a view of the beach where there are island girls drinking out of coconut shells."

Because it's cold as balls out there. I moved four hundred fucking miles South and my pipes still froze! Someone call Bob McDonnel and ask him why the state hasn't paid the fucking heating bill!

The all time recorded low for Atlanta Georgia is -9 F, measured in 1899

It's a freezing bastard of a weather system, and I'm glad I'm not in it, but yellow journalism is exactly the right term.

Right that makes sense. Go somewhere everything is bloody poisonous but they'll take my gun away if I go there.

I did mention that even the beavers are poisonous there, right?

I am afraid to even ask what you consider hedgehogs Down Under. Our version are called porcupines and they are far larger than hedgehogs.

So are ours and they are called Echidnas and don't drive over one. The spines are that hard and tough, they rip tires to shreds, They are funny big critters though. Very shy and harmless as long as you don't try and stroke 'em I guess.

saraah asked me a question and I have to admit I didn't know the answer.
If the boss tells workers to stay home because of the weather conditions, do they still get paid ? Sorry if I sound dumb but it's not something that happens here very often (as you can imagine)

It is 7 degrees here, with windchill of -9. I am in Cobb Co, just outside Atlanta. They cancelled school today for students, which I am thankful for, because folks just do not have enough sense to dress kids properly here, even if they do have the proper clothes, which most do not.

I have to go in so I can get deliveries, I am just hoping my dang truck starts when I go out there in a bit. I walked out with the dog earlier and it hurt to breathe the air!

Ugh

It's in the low 60s in my part of Spain. I am soooo glad we don't experience the same cold that you guys get.
