AthenaSurrenders -> RE: what does everybody do!? for a living/job?.. (1/8/2014 10:58:08 AM)

I'm currently just working for the family business part time and home the rest of the time with my toddler.

Previously I advocated for victims of domestic abuse and their children in high-risk situations. I also taught a theatre class for teenagers. When we moved to take over the business, I had to leave both jobs. I miss the theatre class very much, but I am so glad to be out of domestic violence which was soul-destroying on a good day.

Before that I was a police dispatcher. I've tried a few different things, haven't yet decided what I want to be when I grow up.

Hmmm... Mrs. Mystery... Do I get the cool boobs that can shoot things? One could shoot lotion and the other bullets!

I think massage makes me a switch though- on the one hand I am doing everything I can to please/fix/and give pleasure to my clients(non sexual dammit ><) - but on the other hand, they are kinda my bitches while they are on my table, taking whatever pain I see necessary to give them for their own good.

It's why I love doing deep tissues- I start on the back so I can use my elbow/fists and get all the painfully good bits out of the way and beat them up so when I move on to the legs and arms where I mostly use gentle or firm but very feel good pressure the endorphins from the pain mix with the tingles from the pleasure and the relief and release that the pain has stopped all combining into relaxation and all around limp noodleness.

Head schlepper at a corporate art gallery. I do all of the physical work and manage the art inventory.
Freelance photography business on the side.
I also do freelance work for art galleries...I go in and reorganize them (most artsy people are extremely unorganized) so that their work flow is much more productive and profitable.

So you decided to devote your focus on family, business and material things. You could tell me that you feel sorry for anyone who didn't experience that type of success. But I wouldn't feel insulted by it. But if you feel insulted by someone who makes a general comment, well, that's your business.

Missokyst -> RE: what does everybody do!? for a living/job?.. (1/8/2014 12:06:25 PM)

I am the mother of 4 adult children, all of which are law-abiding and self sustaining. I am the daughter of a parent who currently has 6% kidney function and is starting to show more signs of ill health. Though I am the youngest of my siblings I am also the one who is not at odds with any of the others.
In my life I have been, an artist, singer, belly dancer, customer service clerk, gas pump jockey, car washer, clerk, cashier, counselor, student with 5 degrees (all unused), and currently a computer tech.
Still looking for what I am supposed to do in life.

hi!
just for fun, i am curious about what everyone does for a living? do you stay home, work outside of the home, etc?

i'm in the field of finance--and investment advisor, actually. ... a very non-submissive type of role, i must say...i work all day every day with mostly men and have to be fairly tough to hang with them and compete for business against them..i'm sure they would all die/not believe it for 2 seconds that i am truly submissive in my heart/soul.

anyone else care to share?

myotherself -> RE: what does everybody do!? for a living/job?.. (1/8/2014 12:06:38 PM)

I'm a teacher of children with special needs.

I've never had children, and never felt the urge to have them. But I love my little charges and I get the joy of spending time with them during the day, and getting to do my own thing in the evening and on holidays.

I don't need any random pixels on a screen to feel sorry for me - I have the best of all worlds! [:D]

DesFIP -> RE: what does everybody do!? for a living/job?.. (1/8/2014 12:07:49 PM)

At home mother, one formerly extremely fragile mentally. I've had several of the top professionals in the field tell me I'm the best child advocate they've ever met.

But it's been an exceedingly difficult and stressful life.

Right now, I have wound up serving as design and organization for The Man's home improvement business. And general go fer. I'm not much good with cement though.

And we're in the process of developing a product to be sold this spring. It has some general population applications but I see it more as an accessibility item.

peppermint -> RE: what does everybody do!? for a living/job?.. (1/8/2014 12:08:13 PM)

I quit my job 8 years ago to travel with Gary in his motor home.

Most of my adult life I was a military spouse who took whatever jobs were available in the little towns where he was stationed while going to college as time permitted. I have been a grill cook, cocktail waitress, barrista, secretary, public affairs, film processing, and made plywood.

But its not a "general statement" it is a directed one, with to a specific group of women as intended.

It is pointed to women who, for whatever reason, have not born children.

If you cannot understand why it is insulting, and very probably hurtful, you might want to talk to women who have had ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, born infertile, or any one of many health reasons.

A dear friend of mine had that same statement said to her, by a family member, who knew she had three miscarriages before it was determined she could not carry to term, had a husband divorce her for that reason, and has basically been in therapy since.

The statement is cold and heartless as many will tell you.

MisterP61, you are absolutely 100% right! I feel sorry for any woman who didn't experience Motherhood.

As a cancer survivor who cannot have children, I always find that attitude insulting.

Ditto

Actually, you have no idea what people are or have gone through in wanting a child.

I wanted children my entire life and tragically, was unable to on my own nor can I afford to adopt.

So saying you feel sorry for women who never experienced this, if they really did want to, is somewhat insulting.

If you want to feel sorry for something, you can feel sorry for me having received a cancer diagnosis and being out of work, with my last unemployment check last week and our wonderful Congress not approving an extension.

I usually try to avoid these mind field debates[8|]...Your profile reads like you are single so how can you be a stay at home single mom of 5 kids? Heck, I have only 2 and could not afford to even be just part-time!!

I'm stuck on California's welfare system due to racism. But this thread isn't about me and how I support my beautiful 5 children. This is about what people do for a living. Thank you.

I was going to ask a question, however, after reviewing the possible ways of asking said question, I felt there was no way to ask without getting a gold letter, so I chose to refrain from asking the question.

shiftyw -> RE: what does everybody do!? for a living/job?.. (1/8/2014 1:16:58 PM)

I am the assistant manager to my parents in their small restaurant/mail order business. I also bake, waitress, cook, hostess, cashier, bus, count inventory, process and take mail orders/wholesale clients- I also do almost all their photo and video work which is what my degree is in so thats the most exciting part of all that (hooray for my useless BFA!). But I'm basically their "Girl Friday".

And then I also do admin/receptionist stuff on the side/in the slower seasons/the last three years I left NH and my family to pursue other interests, I worked for a non profit as a admin assistant, I also worked for a green cleaning company, and had my own freelance video editing thing going for a while too. But major life shattering events happened and we moved back here.
