I'm honestly curious about what you guys think. I found this article recently,

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-decline-and-fall-of-the-american-empire/

And while it didn't have any cited sources for their research, it was a compelling argument and case that was made about the future of the "American Empire". I was just curious to know what you guys think. And I know, a lot of people say America isn't an empire as that isn't the definition. But considering how far reaching the influence of the USA has been, especially when it comes to affairs in the Middle east, NSA spying, etc. It's hard not to say that there are imperial qualities of your country.

I've said the same thing but I keep getting told that I'm being needlessly pessimistic.

I didnt have my exact flavor.  It has started, but it can be reversed by some very draconian prescriptions.

If not, we are 10-15 years out maybe, from full out second world.  And I am not optimistic about the first worlders on the horizon, they don't look good to me.

Tkman117 -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 8:56:36 AM)

You mean all first world countries?

mnottertail -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 9:00:15 AM)

No, the rising stars from second to first, China, Russia, and the like, but even among the first worlders we have been king of the mountain by many feet, so to go to say (in our minds) on an actual equal footing with the Brits.......uff da, but like them, when we sink, that is the greatest level we can expect to rise to.

(and I mean that without rancor, or disparagement of my English cousins.)   They are a few yards from American and Indian and Chinese and so on colonies.

The US is definitely on the decline. I won't attempt to estimate when it will bottom out because there are so many factors involved. But, other countries are losing respect for us. Our congress is dysfunctional. Moral values are ebbing. The treasury is pretty much bankrupt. Our constitutional rights are frequently under attack. Education in the US is on the decline compared to many other countries.

Opinions will vary in regard to what it takes for a country to be considered "great", but as I see it, it seems that we are definitely declining in most areas.

It's hard to say if/when the American "empire" will fall. There might be some imperial qualities about America's foreign policy and methods of dealing with the world, although that has changed over the course of our history.

I suppose if Americans really wanted to have an empire and keep it, we could do so. But it also seems evident that a lot of Americans simply don't want an "empire," as it tends to leave a bad taste in people's mouths - and the price to be able to keep it and maintain it is getting too high.

We could still be a great nation, still powerful enough to hold our own - that could probably last for a lot longer than our "empire," however one wishes to define it. We don't really need an empire anyway. Overall, it's been more trouble than it's worth.

America will likely go through some political adjustments over the next few decades, some of which might be quite painful - although it doesn't necessarily mean "the end." It may just mean the end of this era, but the beginning of a new era which may be much better and something we can't even imagine today.

I always take any kind of predictions with a grain of salt, especially if it involves predicting when the U.S. might collapse. We don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, let alone 25-50 years from now.

EdBowie -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 9:42:00 AM)

I think the looming implosion of China, will drag down the US and several other economies.

mnottertail -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 9:45:04 AM)

If China actually implodes, Ed (and I don't think that is in the realm really) we go down bigger and flatter, they will dump treasury securities trying to swim out of it, and we will go wading in the East River with cement overshoes, and get in over our head.

Tkman117 -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 9:51:16 AM)

The question was posed more as America on it's own. For now China is pretty powerful, so we could say they're pretty much out of the equation for the time being.

EdBowie -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 10:38:51 AM)

Your question was asked and answered. You didn't stipulate as to the cause.

So why claim that you are interested in what people think, when you clearly aren't?

woah, easy there. You have a fair and valid point, and after I typed out the post I realized there were flaws in what I said, no need to get nasty about it.

kdsub -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 11:45:11 AM)

It all comes down to resources... we have plenty and will have into the next century...nothing else matters.

Butch

mnottertail -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 11:51:03 AM)

Russia has resources, they survive, as will we, but we are talking about how grand our survival will be.

jlf1961 -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 12:01:40 PM)

None of the selections fit my scheme of the downfall of humanity, I feel that world society will collapse under the weight of a pandemic some uber rich dumb fuck brings back from some "adventure" vacation he takes.

The Pandemic will kill 50% of the population, and the diseases that show up from lots of dead bodies lieing around will kill another 20 %. The final 10% will die from technology withdrawal.

Tkman117 -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 12:50:04 PM)

Wasn't really talking about humanity as a whole, but either way you're probably right lol.

FellowSlave -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 2:48:39 PM)

The question assumes wrong paradigm. The US does not stand as a separate unit for some time. The long-term plan is to replace the US empire with global structure where the current top elites ( families) hold key positions. Controlled US economic destruction (not collapse, happening right now) could actually be beneficial or even important to the plan.

mnottertail -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 2:50:53 PM)

What amendment is that, and where is that at in the senate?  When do we expect ratification by the states?

VeryMercurial -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 5:36:20 PM)

It will take at least 10 years.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: Will the American Empire collapse? (1/15/2014 6:40:56 PM)

Wrong polling questions.

We can print money. Few others can.

Will we be simply a reference in history at some point? Of course.

As long as we stay in other people's shit, as long as we write checks to "make" other people love us, we're going to decline.

Best thing we could so right this minute would be; get the fuck out of everyone else's shit.

Ain't no other way.

I heard today that the NSA "only spies on our enemies".

Uh huh...like Angela Merkel's phone conversations.

Yep....the Prez of Germany is well known for putting us in harms way.

Only thing I can figure is...she must have been fucking someone on the DL in the Gaza Strip.
