I am having company this weekend, and my roommate was gracious enough to let them use the spare room in the house. While I was making the bed for said company... my roommate walked in and asked me why I was putting the top sheet on the way I was...

It seems silly, but it literally blew my mind. I never thought about it the way he does. It made me wonder if other people do it the same way...

(I'll answer later... I was just wondering if anyone else has an opinion before I stick mine out there.)

If I had a slave or a sub, or even a domme, I would order her to put the top sheet on the bed. [8D]

Pattern up and covering the head end / pillow.

I don't use a top sheet as I use a duvet, and it would bug the crap out of me once in bed.

however, if I were to do so then it would be pattern down. it makes perfect sense because you fold it back over the rest of the bedding and the pattern then shows. what is the point of it otherwise?

FR

The perfect solution is to use two top sheets: the bottom one with the pattern down, the top one with the pattern up.

use a plain white or coloured sheet

I only have plain white sheets. One or two, though, have some white embroidery on them.

Much like underwear...you are going to rip it off and it is going to end up on the floor so why bother to start?

my mother raised that the topmsheet be placed pattern side down, pulled up to the top of the mattress. The blanket should then be placed (pattern side up) pull up 3 inches less than the sheet, which was then folded over the blanket to reveal the pattern.

So, what about single color sheets? As with clothing, sheets have seams and hems. Bottom sheet seams down. Top sheet seams up.

Also to confuse the matter, one must deal with the hems. The wide hem....usually about 3 inches wide....goes to the head of the bed.

But...this also came from the woman who ironed my father's hankies as well as the pillowcases. I don't iron unless it is a really special occasion.

Darkest side up. Same with fitted.

This is correct.

Yup.

Save yourself the hassle, get solid color sheets.

Besides, 98% of pattern sheets are floral, or some kid based stuff, so why bother?

Thanks for all of your answers! I have to admit that for my entire life.. I've put the sheet on pattern side up. I would pull the sheet very taught and fold it down once over the blanket and then again over itself to show the pattern. (My Mom..Mrs. Proper.. Wait until I tell her she's been doing it wrong all these years! [:D])

When my roommate told me it was pattern side down and folded once.. I was like no way... (Even though it makes perfect sense!)

Jlf...I have found some non floral...non cartoon...very nice sheets. I'm a pattern kind of girl.

Ydd- I was thinking of you just a day or so ago. I'm glad you showed back up! I've missed you!

Tmik- I used to feel the same way, but now I can't sleep without a top sheet.

I go with the side that is softer which usually ends up with the pattern down.

His reason for pattern side down is that is softer. I never thought of it on those terms.

I can honestly say I've never put any thought into that, in my entire life, until now.[&o]

I think I have mostly plain sheets, though... One has a pattern I seem to remember. Since it's not on the bed now, I have no idea what that pattern is, but I'm leaning towards flowers of some kind.

That's all I got Allie.

Delilya -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 7:30:26 AM)

I don't use sheets. I prefer to have a light blanket. Problem solved in my house.

igor2003 -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 7:44:48 AM)

I've had waterbeds, almost exclusively, since the mid '70s. Waterbed sheets come with the top sheet sewn to the bottom sheet across the foot, and the pattern side of the top sheet is always down. I had noticed it, but never really given it much thought until your question, and after considering it, what the others have said seems right...it's so that when the top sheet is turned down the pattern will show.

theshytype -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 7:54:34 AM)

My mother-in-law asked me the same question when she saw me make a bed. I put the pattern-side down as well for when it's folded down, you see the "good" side. I think it really depends on how one likes the bed to look when made. My own mother puts the pattern side up because she covers the pillows and everything. I just like the look of a turned-down bed. It's more inviting to me.
