ORIGINAL: igor2003 It wasn't presented as a musical masterpiece, nor as a Top 40 hit, and to look at it that way seems very narrow minded. To me, it's beauty lies in the fact that it presents America as a wonderful mixture of nationalities and cultures. I think it was very well done. I didn't look at it in a 'musical masterpiece' light. And as far as I'm concerned, the USA is American in the same way that the UK is 'British'. I don't consider it as a "wonderful mixture of nationalities and cultures" either. It's the same bullshit they try to convince us that we are also "wonderfully multicultural". Now, if all these immigrants and 'wonderful cultures' learned to integrate into the society and country they have chosen to join - that would be fine by me (and probably several million others as well). What tends to happen, both in the US and over here, is the immigrants want a little piece of the country and crap they left behind and try to get the "natives" to accept their crap and traditions to the point that they are physically changing the fundamental way that we live and make our/your country the very thing that attracted them to it in the first place. What I'm trying to say is, the Pakistanis/Indians/Iranians et all are inflicting upon us the very attributes that drove them from their own country to seek life elsewhere. Surely that attitude is self-destructive??? Try doing that in their native homelands - you'd be jailed, shot, or just conveniently 'disappeared'. Sorry, I don't agree with "multiculuralism" at all. It will slowly but surely choke and destroy the very thing that makes the USA the land of dreams and opportunity and the UK the 'quaint and quintessentially stiff-upper-lip British'. Our government have very recently declared that immigrants be able to pass a test in British history, English language, and the British way of life before they will be allowed to stay here. They have also decreed that all the paperwork only be printed in English, not fifty zillion other languages. I agree with all the new moves and laws.... about fucking time too!! If you allow the immigrants to convert what makes a country 'great' and desirable to live in, including their languages and traditions, you might as well dig your own grave. I'm not saying they can't use their own language and follow their own traditions and religions within their own house or small community; but to allow it to integrate into the very fabric of a country's society and way of life I think is fundamentally wrong and should be vehemently rebuffed and rejected. So, in that sense, no, it was a crap song. Nothing to do with the musical taste (or lack of). It should have been sung in American to show that America is great (yeah, right) and a great place to be living in.
