I couldn't listen to the Ad because it has been removed by the user :(
But I agree with kdsub that quite a lot of songs are written for a specific language - usually for certain words that go together or rhyme with other parts of the lyrics or just for the way the syllables string together in a tuneful way.

I have often listened to songs written for one language and performed by someone else, or even the original performer, in a different language.
IMHO, the 'other' alternative language version is often just nothing more than pure crap compared to the original.
I can imagine a multi-cultural/multi-lingual version of any song, unless specifically written that way, being completely mullered by whoever sings it.

Multiculturalism is not an issue (at least not for me). I have "grandparents" from Italy, Germany, and Ireland.

I'm very much aware of how different those three nationalties can be... but they are all white christian (if it is south germany catholics) and european... it's not that they needed more efforts to integrate in the pre cold war usa than learning the language.

Interesting point. That's what I took away from the optics of the Coke ad. Not just Western Europeans. Not all white Christians. So, it is not as simple as "My grandparents learned English." America's traditions and core values are rooted in White Anglo Saxon Protestantism. Teddy Roosevelt, mentioned by a previous poster, was a fierce advocate of Anglo-Saxon superiority. But the world is changing and white anglo-saxons are already a minority. Or maybe more correctly they were always a minority but they held the major power. I think that is changing and threatening. What do you think?

I'm sorry the ad was removed. Unable to find it elsewhere yet. However, I was not seeking a musical critique. This is P&R after-all.

I just had a watch of it.

Sorry, I don't agree.
It was dreadful. Asolutely horrible.... made my teeth grate.
And the different languages just ruined what little credibility it might have had.
Nice tune, granted. Shit noise. Or is that wailing what they called singing??

Supposed to represent multiculturalism? Nope. Just ruined it.
The foreign languages just ruined it completely.
Absolutely mullered it.

As for it being a half-decent Ad for the shitterbowel, no, it wasn't.

You didn't say "different" languages. You said "foreign" languages. The United States has no official language and there is probably no language in the world that isn't spoken by an American somewhere. So I ask again, what foreign languages.

It wasn't presented as a musical masterpiece, nor as a Top 40 hit, and to look at it that way seems very narrow minded. To me, it's beauty lies in the fact that it presents America as a wonderful mixture of nationalities and cultures. I think it was very well done.

To answer also the original post, I think coca cola did the ad to sell not to set new immigration policies, the ad should not be taken so seriously if they wanted to make some other customers feel welcome it doesn't take away anything to WASPs. For what I understand painting products with stars and stripes sells in the usa as much as a naked woman here, they fambled mixing that kind of message with a "global pice and love" one.
Now to answer this message... yes I think times are changing and like many changes it is threatening, but I don't think it is a problem of loosing some kind of racial egemony, the problem is after the cold war there it is no more so easy to differentiate between friends or foes.

eta: I've never tried to comunicate on the Champs Elysees in English but asking information to a person under 30 might give better luck to get them in any not english speaking country.

The idea that America is threatened by 'other cultures and languages' in the face of how modern English dominated technological and consumer culture is obliterating languages, peoples and cultures world wide is absurd. We are the Evil Empire, not the victims. Wall Street and Madison Avenue have done far more damage than our military. And are equally dangerous to us as well.

I didn't look at it in a 'musical masterpiece' light.
And as far as I'm concerned, the USA is American in the same way that the UK is 'British'.
I don't consider it as a "wonderful mixture of nationalities and cultures" either.
It's the same bullshit they try to convince us that we are also "wonderfully multicultural".

Now, if all these immigrants and 'wonderful cultures' learned to integrate into the society and country they have chosen to join - that would be fine by me (and probably several million others as well).
What tends to happen, both in the US and over here, is the immigrants want a little piece of the country and crap they left behind and try to get the "natives" to accept their crap and traditions to the point that they are physically changing the fundamental way that we live and make our/your country the very thing that attracted them to it in the first place.
What I'm trying to say is, the Pakistanis/Indians/Iranians et all are inflicting upon us the very attributes that drove them from their own country to seek life elsewhere.
Surely that attitude is self-destructive???
Try doing that in their native homelands - you'd be jailed, shot, or just conveniently 'disappeared'.

Sorry, I don't agree with "multiculuralism" at all.
It will slowly but surely choke and destroy the very thing that makes the USA the land of dreams and opportunity and the UK the 'quaint and quintessentially stiff-upper-lip British'.
Our government have very recently declared that immigrants be able to pass a test in British history, English language, and the British way of life before they will be allowed to stay here.
They have also decreed that all the paperwork only be printed in English, not fifty zillion other languages.
I agree with all the new moves and laws.... about fucking time too!!

If you allow the immigrants to convert what makes a country 'great' and desirable to live in, including their languages and traditions, you might as well dig your own grave.
I'm not saying they can't use their own language and follow their own traditions and religions within their own house or small community; but to allow it to integrate into the very fabric of a country's society and way of life I think is fundamentally wrong and should be vehemently rebuffed and rejected.

So, in that sense, no, it was a crap song. Nothing to do with the musical taste (or lack of).
It should have been sung in American to show that America is great (yeah, right) and a great place to be living in.

There is no "American" language. A lot of the country, myself included, speaks English, which originated in England, not the USA.

I liked the ad myself. It wasn't anything flashy or terribly funny, but it was nice. However, one of my cousins suggested that perhaps Coca Cola did the song in various languages to have people focus on that when they wanted to have something to squawk about and not the same-sex couple that was in the commercial. Could be the case, might not be, who knows. I don't really care either way.

Actually, you (generic) don't speak or spell in English.
Yes, the language and constitution originated in England, but since the time it was "borrowed" over 2 millenia ago, it has been so severely bastardised that it is no longer English nor the British constitution - it has evolved into what is now, very much American.
Very very few Americans speak or spell in English any more.

What do you call the rear storage compartment of a car or the front engine cover?
What name do you use for the valve that releases the water into your sink?
Do you use the English names or the American ones?
For the vast majority of those living in the USA, they use the American names, not the English ones.

"millennia"? Hardly. "centuries", maybe?

I must have missed your link showing that those that were on Twitter were Conservatives and/or Tea Party supporters.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/coca-cola-super-bowl-ad-angers-conservatives-article-1.1600849

Thanks for the link, Ken.

Glenn Beck actually said the commercial can divide us. His comments were along the lines of if you like the commercial, you'll be cast as for immigration and for progress. If you didn't like the commercial, you'll be cast as racist. It's like if there was a leader that was black who held beliefs that you don't agree with (even when held by a white person), you're cast as a racist.

I don't know if Glenn was correct or not with his comment about multiculturalism and the leaders in the EU. I'm sure nothing bad could happen when people don't assimilate and actually "melt into" the "melting pot."

This is the same shit that causes all the "cultural" problems in our society. You know, divided we fall? There shouldn't be rules that apply because of your skin color, racial heritage, etc. Can you imagine if schools had to teach every class in several different languages?

Understand that I took the commercial (and still do) as "diversity makes us better" (a la, the melting pot, and "variety is the spice of life").

She has a nice voice. I'm not big on opera, and her voice is certainly suited for that. I didn't care for her rendition. That's all.
