I blame not just black people being spring-loaded to the point of pissed-off, but poor grammar broadly, government schools generally, and Eubonics specifically, for the confusion. When you do not trouble yourself properly to pronounce word endings...

Read some ads on here. It's amazing how many cannot adequately differentiate between nouns, adjectives, and verbs (i.e. domination, dominant, and dominate).

I really hope nobody gets offended by the 'Trooping of the Colour'..............I'm pretty sure the Brigade of Guards might, in turn, get offended by THEM and that could become a very painful discussion !!

That could be entertaining.

My brain interpreted this as “No Coloreds Allowed” > racist.

I am familiar with the term "colors" for gang / biker colors, but have never seen “No Colors Allowed” and was not familiar with this concept, despite having dated bikers and seen the movies Colors, Warriors, etc.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Well, I am fucking offended! (2/10/2014 10:43:28 PM)

When I was younger (13, 14, 15-ish), I belonged to a fraternal organization that had a "Coat of Arms".

We wore this on Jackets (mostly denim jackets), T-shirts and sweaters. Any item of clothing that bore this insignia was commonly referred to as "colors".

If we had to go through a neighborhood whose denizens were members of a different fraternal organization, we knew that "flying our colors" was a bad move if we didn't want any trouble. Frequently, when we discussed these things amongst ourselves, we would say "no colors, guys".

I guess no American has ever heard Old Glory referred to as "the colors"? Perhaps they've also never heard of the small element of people who carry Old Glory referred to as the "color guard"?

I didn't know we had so many ostriches around here.

And God forbid one is in a crowd and is speaking of "Jiggers" in reference to certain measures of alcohol & a black person overhears, but due to background noise, misinterprets, then we've got a riot on hand.

Well thank you black people experts. I'll keep your thoughts in mind while shopping for my very large pool home. We need a lot of space for the oncoming riot n all. :)

I've seen signs on biker bars which say "No Club Colors Allowed," which makes the meaning a bit more clear than just "No Colors Allowed." However, this is the first time I've ever heard the word "colors" in this context interpreted as racist.

I think it just goes to show how much we need to gauge and measure our word choice so as to not potentially give the wrong impression. On the other hand, these kinds of overreactions can be just as harmful.

Hey,
We're not experts, we just more or less go by personal experiences and/or reading stuff in the media.  We don't claim to be experts in any kind of culture or race. But looking at this topic, the name of it and the beginning post, it's kind of amusing & other cultures on the topic would be just as amusing. So don't take offense despite the name of this topic.
When's the pool party, btw?

Come to Somerset in southern England. Everyone here now has a large pool home.

FR,

This guy can get offended, if he wants. I find it humorous that he got offended over misunderstanding the sign. I'm also glad that he didn't do something really stupid and get himself into a lot of hot water.

What is really, truly worse, is that some people seem to think that they have a right to not be offended.

Do street gangs still wear Colors ? I thought that went out in the 70's with The Warriors movie. It would make them an easy target for the police to spot. I know they might wear a certain color shirt, hat or bandana, I did not realize they wear vest with their insignia's on it. Maybe outside the U.S. ?

They still wear them here. In fact I had 3 walk into the store this past weekend. They looked very cool all dressed up in black although I admit it kinda killed the effect when they left and got into a buick that looked like something my grandma might have drove. I am still not sure how the one fit in there. He was one big dude.

I am trying to understand what point you are making here. I looked at the post you replied to and that didn't help because it was in reply to your post that said "...". Maybe you can help out and explain what you are trying to say.

but poor grammar broadly,

That's really awkward sentence construction.

Eubonics

Eubonics? Is that the speech favoured by the ex-boxer Chris Eubank? Or do you mean "ebonics"?

Also, you shouldn't have capitalised it.

mnottertail -> RE: Well, I am fucking offended! (2/13/2014 1:59:20 PM)

No, wasnt Eubonics the host of the old Newlywed game?   Bob Eubonics I think it was; broadly.

In English we capitalize names (even of different languages). So, capitalizing "Ebonics" is absolutely correct, if we consider Ebonics to be a language. I know I consider it to be its own language.

vincentML -> RE: Well, I am fucking offended! (2/13/2014 2:01:36 PM)

No . . had something to do with the Jamaican Eubonics sledding team I think.

mnottertail -> RE: Well, I am fucking offended! (2/13/2014 2:02:44 PM)

It is not a language in any case, at most it is English vernacular.  You don't speak ebonics in Mexico, or Latvia.
