I do hope everyone knows that the term "good" is relative to what society deems as good.

For example, the stealing of women was once considered good by many cultures, the challenge was then to protect your women in your clan or tribe.

Of course that is not the case today.

Honor killings are considered good by some sects in the world of Islam, while it is generally considered evil in other cultures.

Thus there is no universal definition of "good."

Nor do I think that it is the right of any group or society to impose the definition of what is and is not good on any other society. I personally do not agree with honor killings, but I understand the concept behind it.

Thus the question is only relevant to the society one belongs to.

The good and bad of these activities have been defined differently in history and by culture. Consequently, they are relative values by the evidence of history.

The shape of the Earth has been "defined differently in history and by culture." Consequently, it is relative by evidence of history?

New research as reported HERE seems to show babies as young as three months know the difference between good and bad and given a choice will choose good. Otherwise humans are born good.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that this would be true. I would think if Darwin and natural selection were to be true then bad would be the safest choice rather than good. Otherwise as in nature and natural selection the fittest is the survivor… not the one who would share and make a moral selection.

I do not see morality being a survival technique in nature…so why is it instilled in humans from birth.

Why do you think…if the research is valid…this would be?

Welcome to the forums CD, just so you know we talk rationally here about real life things. I respect your religion, but spouting the same christian crap like your fellow anti-intelligence allies isn't going to bring people to your side or convince them that you're right. If any of my statements are unfounded and false, please let me know so I may label you properly in the future, thank you.

Apples and oranges. You are comparing something that is measurable to something that is a debatable value, the concrete with the abstract.

Well silly me. And here I thought studies finding a sense of fairness in infants and a capacity for empathy wired into our brains were reporting something measurable.

This is so much neo christian bullshit.

First, read your bible, a child is born innocent until the age of accountability.

Secondly, good is not a question of sin, it never has been. To commit a sin you have to make the choice to commit the sin.

Consider this, the bible went from ancient Hebrew to Aramaic to Greek to Latin to English and every other language on the planet.

For example, Thou shalt not kill has been mistranslated, the original was "thou shalt not commit murder"

And getting back to the "original sin" concept, you do understand that the new testament makes it clear that Christ died for everyone's sins, and wiped clean the original sin, for those who came before his birth and those who came after his death.

And your statement "accept christ as your personal savior" is pretty presumptuous.

You have basically said that those patriarchs and prophets who came before christ are not going to heaven, neither are all the people who died before Christianity spread beyond Europe, not to mention the good people who are modern Jews and Muslims.

You do understand that Jesus Christ was a Jew, right? The holy mother was never baptized, so I guess the woman who gave birth to Jesus is going to hell as well.

Now, you want to re think your stand, or should I continue to kick chairs out from under you while you have the rope around your neck?

If you read the Bible you would know that we are born with original sin and that is why we need Jesus Christ. My evidence is the Bible.

And if you attempted or succeeded at burning someone to death for the words they utter today regardless of how foul you find them, you would be imprisoned and quite possibly executed yourself.

Getting back to what is moral: you imply that burning someone to death because of the words they say would be the right thing to do.

I guess you're assuming that your God is thin skinned and would be offended by a man asking questions.... doing that seek and ye shall find thing.

can't ya just taste the irony?

I never said that burning someone is the right thing to do. I didn't imply it either. I just said they would have done this to you back in the day. Don't put words in my mouth.

My friend I am trying to keep religion out of this thread... not because I don't believe ...not because i don't have my own opinions on why these experiments produce the results they do...but... Because good...evil... morality... can stand on their own with no other explanation needed.

I wish if you want to say God is the reason for the results then please start another thread. I see you are new, at least by the number of posts listed, but when religion is mentioned in a thread like this the original points get lost in a religious anti-religious existence of God argument.

There is nothing wrong with those arguments... they just need their own thread... I hope you understand.

Butch

First you show me where I have not spoken truth. I have read the bible probably 90 times since I was 13, I am 53 now.

Secondly, only the neo christian denominations preach this "Saved" bullshit.

Third, if you insist on the orginal sin concept, you might want to pull the proper scriptures out of your ass to prove your point.

Fourth, the early church was not Christian at all, it was based in Judaism. Christians were, wait for it, non Jews converted to the teachings of Christ. The Jews that had accepted the teachings of Christ were still considered Jews. Hard concept for some neo christian bullshiters to understand, but hey.

Fifth, the idea of a "Christian" church did not even come into existence until long after Christ had been crucified.

Sixth, most of what "Christians" believe are not based in the teachings of Christ, but in the writings of Paul. And if you actually do an in depth study of Paul's writings you will see where he is clearly in contradiction with Jesus.

Seventh, Jesus died for the sins of man, now you want to tell me just where HE said that you had to be "saved" "baptized" and accept him as a personal savior to qualify for that gift?

Or better yet, you show me in scripture where he said "Everyone who never had a chance to hear my teachings is out of luck and going to hell."

Hell, even the Prophet Muhammad taught that the "People of the book" would go to heaven even if they did not convert to Islam. For the record Allah, aka God, aka Yahweh, aka Jehovah, aka Iam is the same guy we pray to, the difference is that Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet. You see, we are all sons and daughters of Abraham, thru Noah.

If you dont believe me, read your bible, preferably the King James version, or if you can get a direct translation, the Aramaic or Greek versions.

I am sorry, but the God of my understanding may be vengeful at times, is not so stuck in dogma as to eliminate people from heaven just because they never had a chance to hear the teachings of Jesus, or exclude his chosen people, or the sons and daughters of Abraham.

Now, let me explain a little fact.

As we know, Isaac the son of Abraham fathered the nation of Israel.

But let us not forget Ishmael, whom God also promised Abraham that he too would be blessed, and from him shall arise 12 princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.” Genesis 17

So, if you insist that only those "saved" and "baptized in the name of Jesus" and of course "born again" are the only ones that will be allowed into heaven, then God must be planning to ignore those he blessed and gonna leave them swinging in the wind.

Mind telling me what scripture explains that? You know, that god is going to ignore all those who descended from Isaac and Ishmael and withdrawal his blessing?

As for Back in the day you would have been burned for those foul words you have uttered.

You have to prove your case of heresy. Now just which conditions are you going to use, those of the Spanish Inquisition or perhaps those of the Protestant churches that were used to execute Catholics?

First you have to prove that I have said anything that was not in scripture.

Failing that, you would have to prove I am speaking against set dogma, and that depends on which criteria you want to use. If you follow the Inquisition, you sir, are screwed. I have not said anything contrary to Catholic Dogma.

Now if you are using the protestant criteria, then you are going to have to use the fact that I am Catholic and venerate the saints, because that is all you got.

Now can we get back to the discussion, that being is a child born good?

The Neo Christian crap has nothing to do with the question.
