Looks like there is going to be a need to amend the constitution at some point in the near future.

I guess that's one way to look at it. I find the British/European model of the monarchy/elected monarchy at the top shoving shit down the hill and handling every little detail of peoples' lives, from cradle-to-grave to be odious.

This is where the Americans appear to get the wrong end of the stick.
We aren't governed by the Monarchy at all.
And our parliament doesn't govern every little detail from cradle to grave either.

But what we do have is universal laws.
That means that the laws are country-wide and are applicable from border-to-border.
We don't get some jumped-up tinpot local govenor making up their own laws.
It means that wherever we go, anywhere in the country, the same laws apply everywhere.
If gay marriage is approved - it's country-wide approval with no exceptions (at least not based on locality).
If a law gets repealed or changed - it's universal and country-wide.
We never have to worry about which bit of the country we are in as to what laws apply where or how.

There's a big advantage in laws being universal - no confusion.
And no, we aren't micromanaged as you seem to think we are.

You cry tolerance and speel your venom like a cobra. Are you even from the USA? You actively offend a lot of things and say your bitterness with gusto. Don't mistake kindness and tolerance as weakness. And for the record just because someone doesn't condone gay marriages doesn't mean they hate gays. That is pure ignorance.

And I will put you on hide when I get ready too, I have a better idea. YOU GO HIDE.

If there is any issue that will bring this country to another civil war, it is this one.
We have the courts making ridiculous rulings NOT based on point of law,( i.e. the Supreme Court ruling on Doma) which was merely an opinion.
The constitution provides no protection to homosexuals and lesbians marrying, quite the opposite, the constitution gives the right to make those laws to the states and the fed circumventing the right led to the last civil war and will lead to this one.
I believe that congress has the power to strike down the SC ruling and is in the process of doing just that.
We will see blood in the streets before this is settled to be sure.

You would kill someone over people seeking the right to marry the person they love? If the right is truly that depraved then yes, there will be blood as there is simply no way to live with people that far beyond reason.

And that's your opinion and that's fine.

I like living in a place where people who want to smoke weed can go live on the other side of the country and I don't have to be around it (If only it weren't a state to which I wanted to retire for the longest time).

I like living in a place where some states allow abortion and some don't. People that want abortions can go live in that state and I don't have to live around murderers.

I think the idea of choice is what freedom is all about. The more choice, the more freedom.

How you Europeans handle your affairs is your business and good on ya but I want no fucking part of it. It's why I didn't wind up living in Cwmbran.

Using the hide feature is the first step in moderation. When comments start to violate guidelines we use moderated posting, the next step in moderation, where the staff has to check each of your posts before they are visible. There is a mandatory delay in this so that your posts are not usually seen until after 24 hours. Too many times on moderation and then you are banned for a period of time. Most members exert self control and the hide feature is a tool that is there to help you exert self control.

Now I suggest everyone get back to the topic and stop hijacking it with comments about each other. Ignoring an in topic warning is a mandatory 3 day moderation.

If anyone has any questions you may contact me or Chi. Do not reply to this post.

Thanks,
Gamma

I doubt it will come to that.

Still, the Civil War/marriage equality parallel is intriguing. Majorities do tend to get nasty when their privileged position is threatened.

Actually, I think that it does. Article 5:

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, also as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

The ERA never passed because it could not get the majority.

That's a super majority. A very different thing and we are no where near that on this issue.

...and an other one bites the dust. Federal judge just struck down Wisconsin's ban on same-sex marriages. Friday, June 6, 2014 marks the 27th state to succumb to reasonable thinking despite its Governor...

"Republican Gov. Scott Walker, a potential 2016 Republican candidate for president, has a long history of opposing gay marriage and Wisconsin's 2009 domestic registry law. But in recent months he's avoided talking directly about the state's ban, which he supported, saying it's an issue that needs to be decided by the courts and state voters who can amend the constitution."

Ah . . . no. It's entirely within the constitutional system.

As is the right of appeal.

FR~

What I find strange/weird is that a state is able to make and pass laws that override/modify/repeal/ignore a federal law.
Then, when certain people don't like it, it gets kicked into another courtroom.
After that, it's a case of kicking the can up and down the road ad-infinitum.
One minute it's legal, next minute it ain't.
Then it's legal in one state but not another.

[sm=wtf.gif] What kind of fucked-up stupid legal shit is that?? [sm=passthelube.gif]

I can understand a shooting match between the legal-eagles and the churches.
But c'mon you guys.... get yer friggin' act together!! [sm=gaah.gif]

Californians are all too familiar with this from the state-approved medical pot being subject to threat by the federal laws. Now, Colorado is dealing with a pot/cash problem from banks because of federal laws. You have a point.

But, what do you suggest? Should states no longer have differing laws? Should all of America be under one, unified set of laws?

Many Floridians, since the courts tossed around, then chose, a President instead of deferring to an electorate, called this use of the judiciary, The Bush Coup.

In my youth, people traveled out of state to get legal abortions. Now, it's gay marriages and recreational pot use. I does appear that the "system" has replaced "function."

OP - Hopefully, the tipping point has been reached and other states will catch up in evolution. While I don't like the whole tradition of marriage for anyone, I despise discrimination.

ETA - clarity
