Serious question here, folks. I'm writing a piece, and I'm in a corner on a scene. In it, I have a captive handcuffed to a radiator, and it's on. My experience with that is as the applier of, not the receiver, and the radiator in question was non-operational. If you have experience with that, how much heat transfers through the cuffs, and what did it feel like? Was there any damage?
For clarity, it's one of those old-fashioned ones you see in older buildings. Thanks!

I can't answer your questions but would like to read the finished piece!

I think the radiator should be cold when the captive is first handcuffed and slowly heat up...

I am quite familiar with that type of radiator, though admit I've never been handcuffed to one. Depending on how high the boiler is set, how large the building is, and if the radiator's valve is open, they can be excruciatingly hot to touch, to very hot (but unlikely to burn) to mildly warm when in operation.

Most radiators of this type that have their valve open and are being used to heat the room, will be mildly hot most of the time, and excruciatingly hot when the boiler cycles on to up the heat in the building.

Assuming the cuffs are made of steel, steel conducts heat very well. Not as well as copper, but over time I'd say the build up would be fairly intense.

I'm hoping all this makes perfect sense, it does to *me* but I don't know if I am explaining it well.

Not only the heat transfer through the cuffs but being cuffed to it means she'll be in physical contact with it. Yes, she could be burned.

In the scene, she is forced to remain in a sitting position, attempting to not touch the radiator with her back (clothed). The radiator is on when she's cuffed to it, and she's forced to remain in this position until her captor returns. What I was hoping for was someone who can give me a realistic time frame for the heat transfer to occur, as well as the sensation. While I know what 'hot' feels like, I'd like to see real-life descriptions of what the sensation is in that situation.

You can take it for granted, I'm not trolling for wank-material here, I can do much better on my own, thankyewverymuch. And this is for a written piece of fantasy, not anything I'm looking to do to anybody. I just want to make it come off the page as believable. Thanks again.

And kalikshama, you will. I intend to post it here (Creative Writings) first, when I can get the damn thing finished.

I personally doubt there would be major long term heat transfer over any duration of time. You must remember that as the air moves around it, and between the chains and the cuffs, the temperatures will drop significantly. They would experience warmth but I doubt true burning, but I'd be far more worried about accidentally touching that radiator with your hands which would be extremely difficult to avoid forever. Any lapse in concentration could cause "HOLY GOD F#!%ING HELL!"

idk- our radiator (we're in an old barn...) doesn't get very hot.

I've touched it. Several times (I'm like a moth to the flame with that thing...). Only once did I even say ouch, and really it didn't even burn me (no mark, I only said ouch out of surprise). Currently my man has a shirt draped directly on it and its been there for three days, as a result of him having to prove me wrong about it going up in flames . But I think you're story sounds hot so I'm hoping someone comes along with a better response than that.

ETA- I have long been in the food industry, my tolerance for burns/heat is skewed. I have caught red hot baking sheets out of the oven bare handed without dropping them, so actually take my advice with a grain of salt I guess.

Could you connect her to it with a short length of chain? Enough to not worry about heat transfer, but enough to keep her in the predicament bondage?

When in doubt! Do an experiment! If you have handcuffs, put one on your wrist and rest the other on the stove hot plate.
I once unwittingly left myself a booby trap in that way... I was stirring around some food in a frypan and got distracted, leaving the spoon or what ever I was using in the pan with the hand part hanging out over the lip. I came back and went to grab the hand part of the spoon and resume stirring.... Only to have it sear my fingers................

How about padded cuffs? And a chain.

I lived in a really old dorm while I was in college and the rooms had radiator heat. We either sweltered or froze, there was never a happy medium, lol. They got pretty hot, but my guess is, the very worst case would be first degree burns?

Hmmm, some possible answers already. Aries, in order to conduct the experiment properly, I'd need a radiator to do it as I wrote it up. Hot plate isn't close enough, and to be honest, I'm not all that keen on trying myself. Hlen, windchymes, it would be nice, but the whole scene revolves around a fast, poorly-planned abduction, and the antagonists I've written aren't ones to think ahead like that. Their incompetence in this area is one of the salient points later on in the story. To lay it out more without cutting and pasting, the heroine was the subject of a botched kidnapping, and while her captors have planned ahead enough for handcuffs, they weren't thinking much past that.

She is fully-dressed, and cuffed to the radiator only because their intended hiding place was co-opted, and they had to think fast. I'm trying to impart a sense of fear, desperation, and to describe the sensations of what handcuffs fastened to a working radiator feels like to the reader. While one of the kidnappers is trying to keep his mom out of his bedroom (not minors, just two guys who failed to launch), she's in there trying to keep from getting burned as the cuffs are growing warmer. I just need some descriptive language that is based on if anyone really experienced something like that. Granted, it's a minor point in the whole story, but I'm trying to make it sound as 'real' as possible.

I once took care of an older woman who received full thickness burns from falling on a radiator and slowly roasting, because she was too weak to move. The surgeon had to remove flesh to the bone.

I am firmly biased towards 'fuck that' in terms of chaining people to them.

Never been handcuffed to one but I grew up with such radiators and we would sit near them or on them as a kid to warm up. Once it turns on and gets hot it will burn your ass! Or anything else touching it. So yeah, those handcuffs are gonna get so hot that they will probably leave a burn.

Well from the experience I have with them if you are talking the standard radiator for homes (not business ones that are a bit bigger and produces a lot more heat) she will feel quite a bit of pain within about 5-10 minutes (with a handcuff with no chains), however the real trouble while maybe a small burn on her wrists (shouldn't be too bad unless you are talking a set of cuffs with no chains) is her back. If she is forced to stay closer then 6 inches away for more then about 25 minutes she will have the equivalent to a sunburn across her back. Much longer then that might begin to deepen the burn and can begin to cause scarring. Depending on what your scene is (I wouldn't mind reading it as well once you finish) I would suggest some type of buffer along her back if you plan on using any type of a flogger or whip after her being tied up. Also I would suggest a handcuff set with at least a 3-5 chain length. This will allow enough heat transfer to cause pain but not enough to cause scarring. I would also limit the time to 30 minutes (or 20 if no buffer along her back). This is just my suggestion and I hope it helps. If you have any more questions for me let me know.

That was precisely what I was looking for. She's fully clothed (business attire with light leather jacket, nothing kinky). The scene is set in winter, in an older house. The cuffs are knockoff S&W police models bought at a pawn shop. No discipline/torture in this one because the abduction has taken place within the previous hour or so, and the only reason they're in one of the kidnapper's bedrooms is because their intended hideout has been 'taken over' by another friend holding an impromptu party. Thank you, you just gave me a time and details that sound workable. This story is more of a damsel in distress piece with a twist rather than the usual tripe I produce.

Well I can imagine trying to move whatever body parts I could away from the radiant heat but there is obviously the hand that will be close to it no matter what so, I'm guessing a rather unhappy hand... Although I seem to remember from when we had a portable radiator type heater (probably wouldn't reach as high temps as a on the wall one, I duno). When you laid flat on the ground next to it, you somehow dodged a lot of the heat.
This was an electric portable radiator mind you. But I'd still say the hand cuffs should probably be quite hot.

The path available will limit heat transfer up the chain. I would put the emphasis of temperature on the radiator. That is where it is coming from.

I'm gonna thank WCossey for giving me something that at least sounds workable, for a writing, anyway. But I am going to take into account the heat on her back (she's wearing office attire on a late fall day), as when I stalled, she's leaning forward away from the heat and her wrists are starting to hurt. Now I gotta finish that scene because the poor girl's been waiting a couple days now for me to get this information.

I understand this is a writing but incase it is used in a real scene I wanted to add this information from my experience. For the sadist/dom/master trying this keep a soft rag and a bottle of lemon juice. If the person is kept too close and get burned but the skin is not broke use the lemon juice to remove the pain and heal the burn faster. For after care it will help a lot with any type of fire or heat play as long as no open wounds.
