Status: offline 		Hyacinths are everywhere at the moment, their scent is so strong. One of my clients had some hyacinths arranged in a vase, delivered to her recently by a family member. Have never seen florists use hyacinths before in a spring bouquet.

Status: offline 		I know it's a little early here, but I'm excited to see what starts blooming. The prior owner had a major green thumb.
Only thing that I know exists under the snow are roses in the front and asparagus in the back.
I tend to be a rose bush killer and I know nothing about asparagus other than I love to eat it.
I'm hoping there's something I can work with.

Status: offline 		I need to drive some stakes into the roses this year to fertilize them...the roses bloomed 2 times last year and so far no buds.

Now, if I can get my brother to till up the burn pile I worked on today, I will plant some asparagus for my mom. She loves them too.

Status: offline 		I'm proud of myself. I've got some tulips growing!! I managed to not kill them! YAY ME!!! Some iris that I brought down from my Mom's is just goin' to town, and the as yet unidentified bushy thing is budding - it will be interesting to see what it looks like!

Already here when I moved in were crocuses, daffodils, iris, and lilies, but no tulips. The tops of the first four emerged weeks ago, and I have been poking impatiently at the mulch on top of the tulips, and muttering "cheap bulbs from Walmart" but yesterday finally see that the tips have emerged.

I bought a very sickly looking Bleeding Heart at a season's end sale last year. They assured me it would over-winter, and I'm curious to see if it does. Bleeding Hearts are one of my favorite spring plants.

Status: offline 		I love Bleeding Hearts, also. I had planted one at a prior house and it grew like crazy.
Now that we have the space, I plan on planting one or two butterfly bushes along the tree line.
I definitely do best with perennials, okay with bulbs, and awful with annuals (flowers and veggies).

I've read that coarse salt works at keeping weeds down in an asparagus bed as asparagus tolerates the salt. Anyone try this before?

I intend to put in some lilacs and hydrangeas, though. I don't have time for a flower garden this year, but this place needs to be prettied up a bit.

Status: offline 		almost all my stuff is in containers, except my daylilies and Angel Trumpet (and a few bulbs of another variety of iris that I think I waited too long to plant). I think that last cold snap killed the Trumpet. I don't think ANYTHING kills daylilies.

Status: offline 		I have to wait and see if the cold killed my daylillies. I need someone to thin out the irises after they bloom (and lift a heavy limb over the fence). Curse having degenerative joint disease in my back and bulging discs (and my brother having a crushed spine from the army).

Status: offline 		has anyone used loads of coffee grounds - ideally from cafe's since drinking that much coffee by yourself probably isn't healthy! - as an addition to your garden soil? i've heard it's supposed to be very good for the soil and plants.

Status: offline 		^^^Yes! Plants that like acidic soil do very well with it. Coffee grounds are a major component of my neighbor's 'community' compost bin. Several of the surrounding neighbors contribute to it, and it's been producing some wonderful soil. The bin worms think it's delicious, too!
