The biggest nut cases in the USA find their home in the Republican Party. The ignorant (Obama is a Muslim), bigoted (anti-gay or racist) and strident "hate the federal government" types. Gun nuts (paranoid) and religious fundamentalists (threatened by secular beliefs) round out the intolerant extremists.

The question is, when will the republicans stop accommodating bigotry and extremism?

****** Now, Nugent is a bit player, a bomb-thrower not worthy of much attention in his own right, but the fact that he and so many like him feel at home within the Republican Party and aligned with conservative causes is.

By no means are all, or even most, Republicans this extreme, nor do they condone this level of extremism. But far too many extremists seem to seek — and find — a home within the Republican ranks. There exists a foul odor of accommodation. ****

**** But there are two important differences here. First, the Democratic Party is not suffering a diversity crisis; the Republican Party is.

Second, the impression beginning to take hold is that the Republican Party is a home for the hateful, not necessarily because the party invites them, but because it doesn’t forcefully enough reject them.

How does this sit with minority members in the party’s ranks and those it hopes to attract? How can they be expected to find a home among such hostility? And why aren’t more party leaders willing to take a stand and stamp out the bigotry? *****

Back that truck up. The left has no extremists, no nut cases? Really?

Since when is any lack of diversity a crisis? Diversity for the sake of itself is hardly laudable.

As the nation becomes more diverse, an undeniable fact, the Republican party's lack of diversity dooms it to an increasingly marginalized position. This is bad for the nation and will lead to problems.

Okay, so the tree huggers who spike trees on land owned by lumber companies so that it is dangerous to try and cut them down are not extremists?

Of course the liberal naturalist that burn down housing developments under construction are not extremists?

Then there are those liberals who break into labs, destroy research and steal lab animals, some of which are infected with various diseases that are being studied.

You are right, none of the above liberals are extremists.

I agree that there are definitely Liberal extremists, just as there are right wing extremists. But you have to admit, by comparison these days, the right wing seems to really take the cake. You got conservatives calling to over throw the government, threatening the president's life, harassing and killing minorities (and getting away with it). All for what? Because they feel persecuted? Because they think that because liberals want to give equal rights to everyone are stepping on their rights? That liberals trying to regulate banks and other industry are over stepping and causing economic problems, when in reality without these regulations would result in horrible abuse to both the people, economy and environment?

Liberal extremists are much fewer than you'd think, and they have generally noble ambitions, but they, like right wing extremists, take action in a very misguided way. They don't see the larger picture, they only see the popular opinion of that side. Which like the right, can have disastrous effects.

The right wing has this image in their heads that they're the victims, all the while they fight to keep tools designed to kill people, while they struggle to maintain "traditional marriage", while they argue against women rights, and while they try to deny basic scientific principles and knowledge. It's totally ass hat backwards.

So while there are liberal extremists, you got to ask, who is worse? And who is going to cause the most damage? Because keep in mind, there are many conservative politicians that have said some pretty crazy things, much of which are pretty extreme.

The types you are naming sound apolitical to me. Who like that has an actual seat inside the Democratic party or by a candidate's side?

Damn, even the Occupy Wall Street crowd pretty much vanished without a trace. It showed little desire to enter into the Establishment and make policy.

Anti-gay and anti-immigration positions are real movements on the right -- as is a color blindness that fails to see the influence of racism on minorities.

----

Also, you are missing the point. The Democratic party is not actively accommodating and creating a home for extremists.

Actually I would venture to say that the liberal extremists are just as active, but their techniques rarely make national news. Who cares if some logger with a chainsaw hits a metal spike in a tree in Washington state if they live in Florida. Arson is considered a local crime, as is break ins at non-government labs.

My problem is that I cannot get enough moderates interested in forming a terrorist group with the goal of having all the world governments work together to reverse tectonic movement and recreate the super continent of Pangaea, or failing that, forcing a intelligence requirement for elected officials.

Lol, dude I'm not advocating for one side over the other. Cloud boy made the major point that should be addressed. Which is that there is no party that advocates extremism the way the right wing republicans/tea party does. I mean, you hardly see that with the liberal parties around the world, more often than not they outright condemn such actions as they're not liberal in nature. They don't represent what it means to be liberals. I could likely say the same with moderate conservatives, which has enough grey area that I at times may be inclined to agree with moderate conservative policies, but not the extreme ones. I completely disagree with extremism of any kind, it's sickening and juvenile. If you want to solves problems in this world, do it the right way within the law. Not by attacking people or laying booby traps.

You do understand that the statement I put in bold goes against every aspect of the training I got in the army, and I suspect the Marines as well. You would have to get the Air Force personnel off the golf course or out of the NCO and O clubs to ask them. As for the navy, they just like to blow shit up. Their ships either have guns, planes or sink on command and launch cruise missiles. As for the SEALS, they are pretty much trained to raise hell and blow shit up.

I never really thought that I would actually see someone maintain the "violence never solves anything" outside of a classroom.

From Lt. Col. Jean V. Dubois (Ret.):

"I'm sure the city fathers of Carthage would be glad to know that. . . .

Anyone who clings to the historically untrue and thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never settles anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history that has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms."

Who would someone like Nugent align himself with if not the Republicans? If he's going to pick a side, it can't be the Democrats and that doesn't leave a lot of options.

What surprises me is how the Republicans acquiesce to their resident wingnuts. It's not like the Pat Robertson types have other parties to pick either.
