This question has gone as expected. No one can know the answer until Obama stakes out his own position.

I think it will be the exact same kind of response a Republican president would get from the Democrats.

You're insane.

Bush had big support for Afghanistan and decent support for IRAQ. Contrast that with Clinton in Yugoslavia. Not a single Republican supported him.

I imagine the republicans' response will be varied and be all over the place; from the older folks that remember the cold war, screaming for "russkie blood" to the younger ones that just want to be left alone to earn a living and live life.

I don't really think it will matter what they do. You will find a few with the most extreme positions and try to claim everyone on the right feels the same way. Then you will start a thread whining about how terrible those cons are.

Patience, Cloudboy. The Republicans have to get home from work, before they can decide if your bait is worth playing with...

It has been suggested already that you have no interest in finding any sort of real answer, but are awaiting the opportunity to find the kook, and declare him/her the spokeshole for all of us. I suspect that will be exactly the outcome of any discussion, especially after the cheerleaders stick their heads in.

Ukraine isn't Russia's backyard. It's their side porch, their connection to the sea, and they've fought bloody wars over it in the past.

Maybe we should let Canada take the lead on this one?

It'll be handled in the following manner:

If President Obama...
A ) ...chooses Option A, Republican/Tea Party will choose Option B.

B ) ...chooses Option B, Republican/Tea Party will choose Option A.

C ) ...chooses a combination of Options A & B, believing this will make most Americans happy, Republican/Tea Party will choose Option C.

Bottom line here is that the Republican/Tea Party will take which ever option scores them the most political points, their principles, values, and ideology be damn!

Small typo there, joether.

I'm not sure why U.S. politicians of either party would find the need to take a position on Ukraine. It's their country, let the people there run it as they see fit. There's absolutely nothing that America actually needs to do here.

Just a side note, I've read recently that it's no longer considered acceptable to say "the" Ukraine anymore.

Here's a Ukrainian's position on current events there:

Thank you for asking, KK. Everything is good here now (we live in the eastern part of Ukraine) and actually it was more or less quiet all these days in our city. Most dramatic events and actions took the place in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine a few days ago, where about 80 people has died from the government forces and snipers in the strikes, but now looks like everything is over, at least now our criminal president Yanukovich is fled to unknown direction, his residence is open for everyone, and now we have to elect a new president in next 2-3 months.

Most of people are happy now, because that president was a really stupid dumbass, with two criminal records and prison sentences in his past. He also had a very corrupted government, included the police, justice, etc. and lived like a king, while the status of Ukraine were decreased almost to to default levels.

Here's a couple links with lot of interesting photos and English comments from a Russian blogger who was right there in those days:

Well 1st, the rightist will go (temporarily) from fondling putin`s balls and fluffing him

to declaring him satan, threatening our kids, our freedom and the baby jeebus himself...(that is shrub, when he looked into putin`s eyes ) then back to putin-pleasuring....

Eventually, they will do what they always do.....

Ask "what Reagan would do".... peppered intermittently with Ronnie-brown nosing, imagining that whatever Reagan would have done would be awesome.....fer-sure.....

So as the rightists masturbate each other`s fantasies.... and opiate with dreams of st. ronnie....the reality is the west is gaining and the ruskies are losing.......

They are set to have new elections....The ruskie`s puppet(and therefore, a republican hero) viktor yanukovych is on the lame w/ an arrest warrant on him.

I visited the Occupy Wall Street camp in BAL and followed OWS on the news and I could not help but think about it looking at the Ukrainian pictures. In comparison, OWS was seemingly fighting for nothing at all and uninterested in actually changing the USA. I know the stakes were different, but OWS impact has been like a foot print on the beach -- washed away by the shore.

About the Ukraine. Read the January 6 TIME opinion article by Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (former Defense Minister of Germany) along with Gary Kasparov.
"The primary reason for Putin's self-aggrandizing behavior is the ASTONISHING LEADERSHIP VACUUM in the world." Guttenberg can see that America is in retreat. Thats the main cause for the leadership he is talking about.

Translation: Obama is an incompetant foreign policy joke. Guttenberg, who is going to become a major player in the EU, Just about said that.

Over the years I have known the opposing parties to stand together but never have I seen them pat the other on the back for a job well done. I wouldn’t expect it and I don’t see where you should either.

I would think that if they agreed with Obama’s actions they would support him in Congress if needed but would never praise him. And if they disagree with him they will say so… after all it is their job.

It is wrong to see foreign policy as Democrat or Republican. Also, Obama is not the main figure shaping the policies. Forces above Obama, the puppeteers call the shots. Key Republican and Democrat leaders always vote the same when a major foreign policy action is taken. Some insignificant members of the Congress may whine, and stupid mainstream presstitute talking heads amplify it.
Ukraine is an interesting test because what happens there it is not an American problem, it is in most part globalist-corporate concern. It may show the true colors of the Obama regime.

Yes, Obama is incompetent. He inherited two (2) successful war campaigns in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN that installed stable governments, civil peace, and economic prosperity and then he just pissed it all down the drain --- such that we've been unable to stop IRAN's Nuclear power plans, the carnage in Syria, or Putin from flexing his muscles in the Ukraine.

BTW: I like your position. Just blame Obama up front for the whole crisis in the Ukraine -- that way you don't have to wait to condemn his reaction to it. Pure Genius. A real checkmate move indeed.

(Emphasis mine)

How did you arrive at that conclusion? Guttenberg is a discredited has been.

Sandra beat me to it. Guttenberg had to resign and quit politics, he has only recently come back into public office. Would the public vote for a known cheat ?

Ironic to see a Republican bigging up Germanic royalty though.....
