in the forums whenever his name comes up people have nothing but bad things to say about him? Why?

I've never seen his name come up, but why should he get any better treatment here than Christ does?

K.

Worth repeating.

Joel is a religious leader, the face of a movement, a Christian revolution. His ambition put him in that position. No man of such aspirations, and now, accomplishments, walks that path without knowing the risks. I'm sure he is psychologically insulated against "sticks and stones." And, if it creates a need for therapy, his business acumen has afforded him the best health care American dollars can buy.

And, remember, a LOT of Americans are atheists, agnostics and rationalists who don't appreciate tax breaks for those who profess to worship an imaginary friend in the sky.

So, yeah, Joel has detractors.

Actually there are not that many Atheists, Agnostics or sadly rationalists in the United States. If memory serves only 16% of the population identify as Atheists and Agnostics.

It is encouraging that even Evangelical Xtians resent people like Joel Osteen getting tax breaks because he waves the God Flag. If he claimed he was a motivational speaker he'd lose the tax breaks and the moral authority that he needs to run his scam. Frankly, without the "God will multiply your gifts to me" - he's not anywhere near as entertaining as the people behind "The Secret".

The only money Joel Osteen makes is from his books, which he pays taxes. Also, most people in the USA are Christians. Concrete evidence: Poll: Most Americans Say They're Christian

Lorraine,

Most people say they are Christians? ROFLMAO! Okay... let's go there.

Are they practicing Christians?

Are they afraid to deny it because if they do so they may be denying the Holy Spirit and Christ and then will go to hell? They aren't sure there is hell, but they have been told there is and most are afraid to go to hell. Very powerful tool I think.

I did a survey Lorraine. I went out onto the streets and into bars. You know, the places most Christians told me not to go to because... my Lord... save her, she could get raped again... she could be hurt, what would people think of this appearance of sin?

Most the people I had contact with had some sort of religious training and believed in god and heaven and hell... and sat drinking most every night. They wanted to know which church would be best for them... where they could go after a long Saturday night and hung over... but dressed and cleaned up... to be the good Christians they needed to be to satisfy their mama or get a ticket to heaven. I asked them... they said... they were a believer.

You are not the only one that might have some experience here and let me tell you.... persecution isn't something you go inviting as you have. This is real commentary from people experienced in life who have opinions and valid stands just as you might think you have. You are not saving anyone... you are not spreading the word and you are doing what the bible said not to do. You being a professing Christian ought to consider that. Let Joel Osteen defend himself. You cannot possibly know enough about the man to make a stand and claim by things you have been told, read or heard... what he is or isn't. From what I've readily seen, you would be wrong. You are debating the word... get your concordance out and look into that. Don't go by what anyone, including me says. Check it out babe.

If I would encourage you to do one thing, just one... it would be to stop following man and find your way on your own between you and your God... unless he cannot teach the individual and hasn't time to be omni present to teach you by His Holy Spirit.

Think about it...

Fast reply.

This is the kind of stuff that puts Me in the category of 'a person of faith,' rather than into organized religion.

He got the money and the mansion from selling books? Fine. Were there better uses for the money? Absolutely.

A person can not amass wealth and be a disciple of Christ while people...... Children, go hungry in the streets.

Granted, any person who believes in Christ is, by definition, a Christian. Spreading the word isn't the "best" that one can supposedly do. He might be a great speaker. He might be a great author. He might be the architect that builds wonderful buildings for people to congregate....... A ministry. A fellowship.

Yet, while he's doing this, he forgot a thing or two about what Christ taught about hording wealth or ignoring those who can not help themselves.

How many meals is the current exchange of a stained glass window going for these days, anyway?

Lorraine we are just having fun here, not trying to be mean to you. The good points of this is you exposed us to Pastor Joel Osteen, who I never heard of. Lots of us are checking the web-sites out on him. So you are spreading the good word that you believe in. With out the wise cracks here this thread would have died after 3 post, your word will get alot of mileage here. By the way is Pastor Joel a kinkster also, you must be one being on this web-site here ?

Mark 10:17-31

New Living Translation (NLT)

The Rich Man

17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. 19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’[a]”

20 “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”

21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. 25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”

26 The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.

27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”

28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.

29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News, 30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life. 31 But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.[c]”

Osteen is not the worst sort of charlatan. He has gotten rich spewing pablum that makes other people feel good but he does little real harm. Prosperity theology may be directly contrary to the entire NT but it makes it adherents feel hopeful. Compared to the real scum like Robertson and Hinn, Osteen just isn't worth getting worked up about.

I saw this topic and laughed, because my mom relatively recently told me after I pretty much had a heart to heart (never happens) with her that Joel Osteen had the answers in his show. Then when I didn't want to watch it, it was "if you don't watch it then don't talk to me about anything."
Ah ok, good to know. LOL!!! I'm very capable so it didn't really bother me but yea... I wish there was someone I could have given the "REALLY?" look in that moment.
So are some of his followers a bit deluded? Perhaps a smidgen. << UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :)
The thing that bothers me with these "faith healers" whether it be poverty, sickness, lack of companionship or whatever they think they can heal with "prayer" is that it leads to people actually neglecting their children and leaving it up to the Lord.
I'm an adult but for a young child (like the couple who killed their two children with prayer instead of medicine) it is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS THING.
God may exist and be everything any person in any given faith believes but the one thing we do know is he is not a magician and some people ARE victims of circumstance.
It wouldn't be my fault (because I didn't pray enough) if I was born in a war torn country or stricken with some terrible illness.

He is a good man with good messages and good stories and he makes people feel good…so what is not good about that?

I’ll bet those ranting against him have never really listened to what he has to say. If I were an atheist I would still enjoy the sermons…They always have a moral that those that believe in God as well as those that don’t can appreciate and respect.

Perhaps he saved them from becoming like you and Steel.

Why should you care what peace he brings to their minds... Why even comment when your lack of faith makes it impossible for you to understand? The only reason I can figure is you want to show contempt for people of faith in an attempt to be superior...well it isn't working.
