If it was a hijack, its difficult to believe it was a successful one. Now that more information is being made available, it pointing towards some sort of sabotage but unless it was suicide, hijacking a plane is a means to an end unless it all went terribly wrong.

I'm of two minds on this.

Rational, believe-everything-he's-told-Michael says: "They hijacked the plane and just haven't made their demands known (that we know of. They may have contacted Malaysian officials or the airline) yet."

Tin-foil-hat-wearing-Michael says: "The pilot (or maybe even the entire crew) was "in on it" and are telling everyone they're stranded until the one(s) targeted for death on the flight have been disposed of."

Either way, I don't believe the plane was blown out of the sky and I don't believe it was an accidental downing.

Television news channels are good enough for me. I don't believe everything I read because most of it has been passed around with bits added and conspiracies made. So long as that information comes from a good source and is clearly backed up by the industry involved, I take on board whats being said.

It would be wonderful if all these passengers turned out to be alive and well. I just hope their relatives and friends will find out one way or the other soon.

Malaysian authorities claim that their conclusion is hijack. Whatever evidence they have at the moment show that someone was definitely piloting that plane after it lost contact and piloting it for quite a while, also piloting it in a weird pattern that is not normal protocol of pilots who face emergency situations. The mystery is still so huge as they scanned all the passengers and none of them have ever obtained a license to fly a plane. So maybe pilots were under duress.

It's so interesting why hijack the plane? For what? No ransom demands. No terrorist bragging about their feat. It's just the weirdest thing ever.

I still say that the 2 passengers with the stolen passports have a huge role in whatever happened. This is seriously weird.

I just heard a radio report that the Malaysian government believes the plane flew into central Asia and landed. Possibly along the Chinese border.
Same story on slate
http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/03/15/flight_370_disappearance_missing_airliner_apparently_flew_to_central_asia.html
Can this get more bizarre?

The fact that the planes comms and other systems were turned off point to some inside knowledge or at least someone on board who wanted to confuse things, they (BBC) now stating that satellite's picked up data from the flight for a good few hours after it was believed lost which has widened the search area as far south as the Indian ocean and as far north as the Kazakhstan border and now the pilots homes have been raided. Imo I think the Malaysian government know more than they are letting on, has some hall markings of an hijack but why the veil of secrecy?

I suppose for those with loved ones onboard the hijack scenario would be a crumb of hope because if it genuinely went down then hopes for any survivors are long gone.

Once more, both of them were identified, one is known to be seeking asylum in the country where the rest of his family fled to from Iran.

Neither of them have any connections to terrorist groups.

I just hope the air industry can learn from this and start improving the technology in planes in terms of tracking them. There has to be a way to embed something in there where satellite can easily track regardless what happened.

So. Now they are saying that it is possible that one of the pilots intentionally grounded the plane. He had a flight simulator in his home??

The rumor is that the airplane was seen above the Maldives. If so, perchance its destination was Mogadishu in Somalia?

I'm along with most of what you're thinking, and it this point it's very obvious that at least one of the crew was in on it.

One of the things that sticks out for me is that no one has taken credit for it..which is the goal for terrorism. So, in my mind that means either someone wanted the plane or it was a hostage situation that went wrong...and in either case, they don't want to tip their hand for future use of the plane or for a future attempt.

One of the things that gets repeated in the travel industry: "Do you remember when a hijacking just meant a free trip to Cuba?"

No.

It is clear that this was planned meticulously. It had a destination, therefore, and it must have safely made that destination.

It appears to be a grand theft. I seem to recall that the airplane was valued at $35 million. A new airplane of that type costs at least $260 million.

If its destination was Somalia, then by now its appearance has been altered and it will no longer be identifiable. It also will have moved on, so at this moment it might be anywhere in the world.

So. If they "stole" the plane, and the purpose was to re-sell it , that theory does not bode well for the passengers.

And. Who would the buyers of the plane possibly be?'

The best that can be hoped for is that they will be held for a couple of years in the desert of Somalia.

That might be anyone.

I do note that the USA appears to be most experienced in stealing large airliners. (Four of them in September 2001.)

Okay. I know NOTHING about this kind of high end theft. So. Humor me if these questions are stupid.
How the heck would anyone: A. Manage to land it and dispose of or re-locate 200+ passengers. B. strip the call numbers, etc and re-paint. C. Sell it, and have the buyers take it wherever, with the entire world watching? Wouldn't there be easier ways to make a chunk of cash??

Landing it is simple. The question is where it touched down first. If in Somalia at Mogadishu airport, or first somewhere on a strip in the desert?

The passengers can be handed over to a Somalia warlord to be held or worse.

B. strip the call numbers, etc and re-paint.

Repaint is easy and presumably done within a day.
The identity issue is mainly that of changing the - extensive - maintenance books. I do not know what it takes, but it is doable.

It was a theft to order.

The entire world was watching 911/2001 and most people bought it.

Maybe some people were simply bored and did it for fun.

The question is who got paid and how much.

So. If this scenario is what might have happened, how might they get caught? What are the odds that this plane will stay missing, and the mystery never solved?
