I totally agree with the ruling.

Kansas, Arizona Prevail in Voter Citizenship Suit

Federal officials must help Kansas and Arizona enforce laws requiring new voters to document their U.S. citizenship, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, in a decision that could encourage other Republican-led states to consider similar policies.

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren in Wichita, Kan., ordered the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to immediately modify a national voter registration form to add special instructions for Arizona and Kansas residents about their states' proof-of-citizenship requirements.

Both require new voters to provide a birth certificate, passport or other documentation to prove their U.S. citizenship to election officials. The federal registration form requires only that prospective voters sign a statement declaring they are citizens.

ABC news report

It is in full agreement with the constitution, and it will prevent illegal aliens from voting in elections.

Oh no, they are going to try to restrict voting to citizens, how dare they? (sarcasm font off)

It's redundant.

To get the sort of ID you need to register to vote in the first place you need to have shown proof of citizenship already. It's just adding an extra hoop to the process to make it less likely that less motivated citizens will register.

Actually, no you dont. Most states require a state or federally issued picture ID, drivers license, military ID card etc.

Since the law passed at the federal level on what you need for a drivers license is either a Birth Certificate or Documents proving you are legally allowed to be in the US, green card, student visa etc.

And you dont have to be a US citizen to be in the US military. This was what the GOP was screaming about a few years ago because a bill would "grant citizenship to US military veterans who served in the military without being US citizens."

With either of those two items, you can register to vote without proving citizenship.

Actually, no you dont. Most states require a state or federally issued picture ID, drivers license, military ID card etc.

And not one of those are obtainable without a certified birth certificate on file.

So resident aliens, who are here for school, work, etc, cannot get a driver's license? A non-citizen enlisted in the military cannot get an ID? Hell, when I enlisted they wanted a driver's license and social security card.

Here are the requirements to enlist.

You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
You must be at least 17 years old (17-year old applicants require parental consent).
You must (with very few exceptions) have a high school diploma.
You must pass a physical medical exam.

a resident alien will have his green card, and their passport. After that, to get a state driver's license, he just has to show his military ID.

Do you really think anyone registers to vote knowing they're on file at various places as being a non citizen? The states do actually verify that stuff.

Well according to the GOP, yes it happens all the time, which is why all these new voter requirement laws are being shoved through.

When I registered to vote the last time, I had left my license at home, so the lady kindly took my information, made the card, and when I vote I have to show my license.

Now, we have all heard the stories and accusations of voter fraud the last few elections, by the GOP aimed at the Democrats.

These accusations include but not limited to, dead people voting democrat, illegal aliens (Hispanics in particular) voting democrat etc.

So clearly what I am saying must be true.

There needs to be a font to designate baiting.

Proof of lawful presence/residence is what is needed by an immigrant to get a DL. So, legal aliens can get DL's.

You know, this is just me but if this wasn't another brazen attempt by Republicans to turn legal voters who are in demographics that trend Democratic away from the polls, I just might agree with it.

The day Republicans make it easier to prove citizenship and vote, at least for anyone who isn't a tried-and-true red demographic, instead of raise barriers to voting will be the day I recant my position.

windchymes -> RE: This is going to get me crucified, but (3/20/2014 10:01:51 AM)

It sounds like the same deal when you're using health insurance. Those cards, as well as voter registration cards, don't have photos so they can easily be "borrowed" or stolen and used fraudulently. Most, if not all, medical establishments now require a photo ID that they keep right in your electronic record/chart.

kdsub -> RE: This is going to get me crucified, but (3/20/2014 10:03:14 AM)

Before this was a popular Republican ploy to limit democratic voters... I was for voters ID's. I see nothing wrong with ID's especially for new voters. So I will have to take the heat right along with you.

FR

at some point you'll need a national ID like us living in totalitarian and repressive socialist countries, if not for voting to contain identity theft.

First, any barriers cut both ways. Second, you state that you might just agree with it. What is it about it, on what ground, might you agree but for any stated Republican Brazeness?

You can count me as one who's on your side here, jlf. Regardless of what the GOP may be pushing, if there hadn't been cases where non-citizens had voted in elections elsewhere, I probably wouldn't support it. But there have been. Therefore, I think it's acceptable.

For those of you who are going to demand a link for some kind of proof of what I say, here you go...

www.nbc-2.com/category/242056/voter-fraud

If that doesn't work, just go to Google and type in "non-citizens voting in Ft. Meyers" and look for the link to a video from WBBH news in Ft. Meyers.

MercTech -> RE: This is going to get me crucified, but (3/20/2014 12:46:32 PM)

Interesting... I remember when I went down to register to vote the day after my 18th birthday. I had to provide proof of residence in the local jurisdiction as well as present a certified copy of my birth certificate as proof of U.S. Citizenship. Did that change at some point?

You should see what a person has to go through to get a passport if they don't have a certified birth certificate. Could you produce three persons to sign a legal affidavit that they were present at your birth?

Of course, what the investigation uncovered were that laws already on the books simply aren't being properly investigated and enforced by the duly-empowered authorities. Not to mention that a significant number of these "illegal voters" had been registered by their respective BMV's without their knowledge.

But please, don't let the failure of election boards to enforce laws they're supposed to be enforcing in the first place when it comes to a few hundred people get in the way of erecting barriers that will keep thousands if not millions of legal voters from Democratic-leaning demographics from casting ballots. Because, I'd bet dollars to donuts it won't be white voters who are challenged at the polls in red states to show their papers.

Nitpick it all you want. I'm fine laying the blame wherever it belongs. The politics don't matter to me. It also doesn't matter if it's one, one hundred, or one million. A non-citizen vote is illegal. I'll support any improvement that prevents that from happening.
