Since August, I've been on rehab. In nine months, I might have a hundred miles on my bike. A lot of time on my hands. Just the thing to bring on a blue period. And that would be a real problem. So. What to do?

Fortunately, there is TV. I've never owned one, so quite a bit of 'TV Culture' is a complete mystery to me. (Yay!) Thus, old is new, and archived online. Sort of. With 'limited commercial intermissions'. Sort of.

One series I found particularly fun is Doctor Who. If you haven't yet had the pleasure, this post is for you.

Doctor Who: A glance at Every Story 1963-2013 in 13 minutes

Obviously, the series creators did not visualize their story line 50 years out. The early series is very different in style, substance, special effects, etcetera, etcetera. The original budget was 2500 pounds an episode. In current bucks, that is about $75,000. Chump change. Here is that story, told much later, with the personalities portrayed by, obviously, different people.

An Adventure in Space and Time (1/2)

I found it interesting. But if you don't care to hear about how to put together a TV show, 50 years ago, skip it. If you are interested, it is also worth the time to look into the creation of the Theme Music and credits.

Cutting to the chase, here are the Watchseries dot It pages with links.

Early series.

Late series.

Extra credit.

If you do it the way they figure you are supposed to, there is quite often quite a bit of tedious and pointless mucking about. They don't have the shit in one sock. What I wound up doing is, Open link in new tab / Highlight the title / Right click / Google search / Videos / Search tools / Any duration / Long. Saves a bunch of screwing around, up, and over. Instead of being taken for a ride to some obtuse 'company store' website that may or may not actually have the episode, you just get handed the friggin film. Alternately, look to Greendude33

A couple things to know going in, The first episode was rejected. Slow start. So they did it again, better. So there are two first episodes. That might seem odd, so heads up. Also, in '69, BBC somehow became temporarily so stupid as to throw away the product to preserve the shelf space it was occupying. As if the BBC were in the Shelf Space business. As result, a half dozen or so episodes are missing. Too bad, so sad, now you know. It is also unfortunately true that some episodes, particularly the late ones, have a spoiler tacked onto the end. This is one of those things that I just don't get. The thought seems to be, people will actually want to come back to see the show again, IF THEY PISS ALL OVER IT. That thought seems to EXCLUDE the notion the people watching the show enjoy it. Stuff like this makes me wonder, seriously, if I wasn't dropped off on the wrong planet. If I am not an Alien, from a very different World, the people who hope to create interest by pissing on the next chapter of a story certainly are. I warned you. Be ready to click off when the show ends.

Oh, and, skip the 1996 movie. It is American made. And clearly, no one involved was a fan, except for Doctor McCoy. And they killed him off quick. A couple of times. Replaced him with Paul McGann for the rest of the movie. He might well have succeeded as The Doctor, if not for his part in the movie. It isn't just bad cinema, with an excess of WTF? It's original. Which is about the worst thing you can be, if you are supposed to be part of a bigger story. Instead of relaunching the series, Mr. McGann created a large amount of 'spin-off' media. I don't know if it's good.

I encourage any with a taste for sci-fi who've yet to notice the series to give The Doctor a call, and see if he doesn't make things a bit better, after all.

I must be one of the few that loved the American-made film with Paul McGann. Not least because Jurgen Prochnow played the villainous Master in it - and you cannot go wrong with Jurgen Prochnow as your villain.

It also contains my favourite Doctor Who line ever. Lying semi-conscious in a hospital theatre bed, medics attempting to put needles into his chest, he says, "Whatever you're doing, stop. I'm not human." (In case you haven't got that far yet, FF, the Doctor has two hearts.)

I probably should take cover before I type this...

I've never watched a Doctor Who episode. Ever. Don't know the premise. I had to google dalek just now. From what I gather, it possibly involves time travel with a phone booth and some people are insanely crazy about the show.
There's aliens?

The Dr rocks.

From watching it as a kid to then watching it with my kids. I'll definitely give Tom Baker a vote and I also liked the more recent David Tennant.

There also a spin off series here in the UK called Torchwood that's worth a look.

I only started watching it because some of it is filmed around where I grew up, I liked Barrowman as the Dr's companion Jack Harkness but wasn't sure if they could pull off a whole series around him, boy was I wrong. The children of earth series was compelling viewing.

An excellent bloke. An old friend met him, by chance, in a pub in London's West End. They got ratarsed together and had arm-wrestling competitions.

I've heard a few tales of Tom's gregarious side, an excellent party guest for sure

I'd love to spend an evening with Tom. I loved him as the Dr. and everything I've seen of him since (interviews and shows) just tell me that the man is simply a blast to be around :)

There's aliens?

There, I'm sorry, ARE a couple aliens (on screen at any given moment). Some of them are pretty darned imaginative. But, it seems to me, the hook the show hangs on is the basic problem a capable and independent minded, very long lived alien with a stolen space/time machine always on the way to somewhere else would most naturally have. What's he gonna do for friends?

Very true. Aliens are perfect backup friends.
I just ran out of a series I was catching up on Netflix, maybe I'll try a few episodes and see.

shy... my favorite episode of the 10th Doctor (David Tennant - YUM) is Blink. If you watch that one, and are not both terrified by stone angels AND hopelessly intrigued, I shall eat one of the dust kitties that perpetually reproduce under my sofa. On camera, for you.

ETA SYL!! *tacklegropes*

is Blink not the BEST/SCARIEST DT episode????

Thank you for that.
I do better catching an interesting episode mid-way.
My attention gets lost quickly.

Plus, the guarantee sounds interesting.

Win/win for me
