I think we, as humans, are smarter and will figure out a way to keep things from escalating to WWIII.

I know we are intelligent.
But smart?
I will contest that.

Intelligence is godgiven. Smart is something you learn, like streetsmart. Do you really think we are that smart?
I think mankind is degrading to his lust, just look around here.

Fair enough. I still lean towards the positive, rather than the negative, though. That might be the difference.

I am very positive towards my friends. For the rest I am a realist. That might be negative, but as a whole we are not positive in general.

Have you forgotten, the majority of "smarter" in the US have come up with TV shows like "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."

But I doubt if it will reach a nuclear exchange, long before that happens, some rich mother fucker will take a "primitive adventure" vacation, bring back a nice air born virus that makes Ebola seem like the common cold, and before you know it, 3/4 of the world's population is dead and rotting.

Or some biolab trying to develop treatments for weaponized plague or anthrax will lose containment and we all be fucked.

The final possibility is some wise ass will somehow convince all the world's governments to ban nicotine and once the smokers start going through nicotine withdrawal they will riot and everyone will wish for a Zombie apocalypse.

I challenge that the "majority of 'smarter' in the US" come up with TV shows, let alone most reality shows. Plus, that is the US TV market, and not necessarily indicative of the world. That there are few "new" shows coming out of Hollywood shows me that the "smart" out there aren't the "majority" (and "smart" even comes into question).

That could change if enough people watch Cosmos. What I've seen so far is uh, light years beyond the average reality TV show. New episode tonight!

The western bankers are vying for a very nice, very long, very profitable conventional war, typically...financing both sides. Iraq and Afghan. $1/2 trillion in profits already. Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi...big debt.

See, they can sit back in their palaces, sip their brandy and watch it all come to pass in their safe, arrogant piety, knowing full well that they won't do any of the fighting...or dying. Like Kant informs, how contemporary truth is and that history will continue to be...written in blood.

That's not optimism, DS. It's Pollyannaism to think our species has somehow evolved beyond great wars, or devolved to the point of allowing tyranny to triumph by default.

I just hope it is a good long time before the pieces line up for the next one.

I disagree, Rich. I do think we've "evolved" past defaulting to military action. There is quite a bit more negotiation and non-military action now than probably before (the ease of travel and communication certainly aids this). Plus, with the increased communication and the continued increased globalization, it's going to be less likely for one country (or a handful of countries) to take on the world without risking economic disaster in their own yard.

We defaulted our way right into Afghanistan, DS, and negotiated ourselves right into Iraq. We damn near got sucked into the Syrian civil war because our President went off-teleprompter.

There is a popular talking point theme among the dumbass leftist douchebag bunch, especially the tin-foil hat wing, that wars only happen so bankers can make money. Simplistic idiocy. War existed long before the bankers figured out how to turn a profit out of the deal.

As long as men want power, they will pursue it regardless of cost, and as long as there are people of courage and decency in the world, someone will have to stand against the first sort.

The idea that bankers cause wars seems to ignore the fact that war and violence predate bankers.

This in no way means that bankers do not cause wars.

As long as there is a profit motive involved in wars, there will be wars. Does that mean WWIII, no, mutually assured destruction would not be profitable, nice African skirmishes, that is where the $$$ is! A lot of sabre rattling by the people not in power(See John McCain and his parrot (Lindsey Graham) at every instance) but to go to war with a major power from either side would be pretty stupid. As to intelligent people having anything to do with Honey Boo-Boo, now that is a stretch, TV panders to the lowest common denominator, if that is intelligence, we are all in trouble.

When the jihadis finally manage to start III I hope there is someone to finance our side (even if they make a profit doing it).

Hold on a second. There's an entire wing of right-wingers who want the US to conquer the globe, and who are upset GW Bush stopped so soon.

I doubt that describes the entire Republican/Conservative base. And the populist right is very vocal about the roll of Wall St. as well. I see partisan glasses here.
