To be honest, I would think any business depends on the clients and what they are willing to spend. Look, similar to OsideGirl, I work in a business that could be considered a specialized service (strictly vanilla, though the problems of the clients are often not so vanilla), often I do very little but still get a retainer, the thing is, if things go wrong, I'm very busy, I have to be prepared to interrupt my vacation or drop anything (forget birthdays, family time, etc.) and jump into action. I don't price my time in "Well, I'm not busy today and this looks like a quiet month, I drop my price" but in "How much is it worth to them to have me available when they really need me?" The last few weeks, hardly anything, a few press releases I could have done in my sleep, so yeah, definitely being overpaid, however if push comes to shove, 18 hour days, jumping on planes are expected and delivered. Would I charge less, some clients would wonder if they should employ me, also then I would have to chase work instead of selecting who I work for. While it sounds great and cosy, when the proverbial crap hits the fan, it's everything but and they don't care about how I cope with different time zones or lack of sleep, and why should they. It was my idea and I'm aware I'm only as good as the last job, so I'm quite keen to minimize bad PR for my clients, I'm pretty sure that if I would make a pig's ear out of things, my income would drop dramatically. Let's say if a client causes more than the fair share of disasters, his or her rate goes up, if they don't like it, they're free to find somebody else. Like domming it is not something you just start with, you have the know how, you have the connections and you build up a reputation (which is a damned fragile thing), and you worked in a related field for years (ever wondered why so many dommes are ex nurses or have a medical background). It's pretty much the same for most dommes, they have their market figured out and set their price accordingly, if they'd really be struggling, they'd do something else, a lot of them have a 2nd job so they don't have to compromise to pay the rent. Domming is really not that different from any other feelance job, where you charge what the market pays, going for the lower end of the market is often false economy.
