I understand the difference between "England" and "United Kingdom" and know what both names refer to.  What I was asking is why everyone seems to say "United Kingdom" now, when in the past "Great Britain" was the more common term.  I heard someone say that "Great Britain" has certain imperialist connotations that people might like to avoid today, but my suspicion is that "U.K." has become popular because it sounds like a variation of "U.S."

Edited to add: That raises ANOTHER question for me.  Why does England participate in the World Cup as England?  Why isn't there a unified U.K. team?  We don't have national teams from Iowa, and China doesn't field a team from Hunan.

When we say England we refer to just England.
When we say United Kingdom or Great Britain we refer to England, northern Ireland, wales and Scotland. They are one and the same and both terms are used frequently over here.

Lol as far as i am aware it has nothing to do with the United as in America more to do with the fact we are attempting to show that the seperate parts (countries) are all united.
As for the football question England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all seperate countries that is why they all have their own football teams.

Well, they may call themselves separate countries, but in reality they're not--any more than our so-called "states" are really sovereign states.  Do England, Scotland, and Wales have separate seats at the U.N.?  Separate passports?  Separate intelligence agencies?  Nope.  I mean, I understand that there must be some kind of reason why England, Scotland, and Wales all have their own soccer teams, but it strikes us Yanks as strange.  Maybe it's just one of those bizarre British traditions.

I didn't ask about Ireland.  Does Scotland have its own passport?  England?  Wales?  No.  The Republic of Ireland is a separate country and has a separate seat at the U.N.  England, Scotland, and Wales do not.

Northern Ireland can have a duel passport to show they are off irish descent rather than British and they are part of the united kingdom.
Id love to see you go to Scotland, Wales or Ireland and tell them they are not seperate countries. Do you know (obviously not) how proud those people are of their seperate identities. You would be ripped apart. Please dont presume to tell me how my country runs.
