I loved the UK when I was there a few weeks ago. I loved your taxicabs especially - we have nothing like that here; your drivers are so professional and the cabs are so roomy! I also loved Hyde Park (beautiful). And all the sights I saw in London: Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Kensington Palace, the Thames river, Harrod's, and the Victoria and Albert museum (what a huge place)! I thought the people were very friendly, and really enjoyed it.

I do agree with Caitlyn on the other thread re: the hotel rooms, though. My room was the size of a closet, and there was not much I could do about it; fortunately I was rarely in my room. But I'd go back to London in an instant - I loved it! - Susan

Thankyou Gypsy.
Im always pleased to find others who are vertically challenged.
Most of what i say is tongue in cheek and meant to be laughed at but alas not many share my sense of humour.

popeye1250 -> RE: Minority but what the Hell lol (7/9/2006 4:03:41 PM)

Susan, yup! I wonder why the hotel rooms are so small?
In Ireland a few years back I had to switch hotels because I had to walk sideways between the tv and the bed!
That was an older hotel in Cork though. So, I stayed in a brandnew hotel only opened for a week before I got there in Anderson Quay.
Plenty of room in that one!
And most of the B&B's I stayed in were very roomy.

A buddy of mine in IE speaks of a desire for the entire  Ireland to be its own country. He went into a spiel about potatos, England treating IE like slaves, refusing them autonomy. He mentioned to plight of the IRA. He says England took the best areas for itself- leaving the less desirable parts to be independent.

He speaks of ill treatment in the UK. Names called...told to go home...slurs. [shop keepers]

He says a transportation ticket is cheaper if you work it a certain way.... I guess the keep the Irish at home.

Why isnt the whole of Ireland autonomous?

IMO- they can govern themselves.

I am asking cause I do not know.

-regards

missturbation -> RE: Minority but what the Hell lol (7/9/2006 4:21:32 PM)

According to a friend of mine who is Irish at the end of world war one the IRA began to kill British soldiers. The only way they would stop this was by Winston Churchill giving Southern Ireland its independence which he did. Northern Ireland at the time didnt want to govern itself and so we kept it. You will find that anyone who is in support of the IRA is probably not the most reliable of sources or someone to trust.
We do not treat the irish like slaves lol and as for cruelty well lets just say the IRA is responsible for a lot of terrorist activity on England.

meatcleaver -> RE: Minority but what the Hell lol (7/9/2006 4:32:42 PM)

This thread has got to stop being a love-in. I'm a Brit that chooses to live abroad. I've lived abroad for about a third of my life.

Things wrong with Britain.

It's democratic system is crap. Governments get in by default and not through the popular vote. They do what they want as though they are tinpot dictorships and claim a mandate when they are always minority governments in reality.

Britain's second chamber is appointed. Democracy, what democracy?

The class system still exists despite the claims of politicians and the middleclasses that it doesn't. (one of the reasons I don't live there.)

Brits don't like success unless it's their own.

Middleclass Britain complains about poor people sucking off the system while doing everything they can to avoid paying tax and so robbing the state of more money than any benefit fraud.

The tax system is a benefit system for the affluent.

Britain has a neglected and run down and crumbling infrastructure. Brits complain that other western European countries have such a better infrastructure than theirs but refuse to pay tax to have a infrastructure as good as other western European countries.

Britain have less unemployment than other European countries but that is because they are happy for companies to pay lousy wages and treat their employees as dispposable. Then the same companies complain they can't get the efficiency out of British workers that they can get out of employees in other western European countries who have far superior working conditions.

Britain only belongs to the people at times of war, at all other times the country belongs to the wealthy.

Britain's hotels are outlandishly expensive. You pay per person and not per room. I've paid 50 pounds for a funtional room, in France I pay half that, in Holland I pay 2/3s of that.

Hmm I could be all night making a list.

missturbation -> RE: Minority but what the Hell lol (7/9/2006 4:40:22 PM)

This thread doesnt have to stop being anything, if you dont like it dont post in it.
I never said Britain was problem free lol.
It's democratic system is crap. Governments get in by default and not through the popular vote. They do what they want as though they are tinpot dictorships and claim a mandate when they are always minority governments in reality.
Name me a country thats governing body doesnt do exactly what it wants?

The class system still exists despite the claims of politicians and the middleclasses that it doesn't. (one of the reasons I don't live there.)
Same as above?

Brits don't like success unless it's their own.
Fact? Can you prove we all think that way?

Middleclass Britain complains about poor people sucking off the system while doing everything they can to avoid paying tax and so robbing the state of more money than any benefit fraud
Prove it.

You may choose to live abroad and thats all good but dont judge us all by the same standards.
Just out of interest where do you live now?

Ok History Lesson - hope you don't get to board - reference use of term United Kingdom - "is it coz it sounds like US......  pah.

King Henry VII of England "elected" King of the Kingdom of Ireland in 1541. King James First of Scotland became King James I of England in 1603. Therefore seperate countries but with the same King / Queen. 1606 A Flag combining Flags of England and Scotland Produced - the first Union Flag. "American War of Independence version" - it has no Cross of St Patrick on it. in 1606, 1667 & 1689 the seperate Parliaments of England and Scotland attemt but can not agree upon an Act of Union. 1707 Scotland is almost Bankrupt and England is setting up trade barriers. Act of the Union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland thereby creating the Kingdom of Great Britain (this is the bigest Island in the group of islands known as the British Isles - not coz they thought they were particularly special.) 1800 The Irish and British Parliaments produce the Act of Union 1800 merging the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain thereby creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. They stick another cross on the Union Flag to create the present day version. O I missed out the bit about massive religeous wars, butchery, murder, grand larcenary etc...............
With the seperation of Northern Ireland predominantly protestant at the time and Eire (Southern Ireland) it became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
So in short and to sum up....... the use of the term UK has nothing to do with its similarity to the term USA..............and anyway my country is called .............England.........and we can't take penalties..........

Well, they may call themselves separate countries, but in reality they're not--any more than our so-called "states" are really sovereign states.  Do England, Scotland, and Wales have separate seats at the U.N.?  Separate passports?  Separate intelligence agencies?  Nope.  I mean, I understand that there must be some kind of reason why England, Scotland, and Wales all have their own soccer teams, but it strikes us Yanks as strange.  Maybe it's just one of those bizarre British traditions.

As for the football question England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all seperate countries that is why they all have their own football teams.

Come on LAM! I know you know what a confederation is!

I've been to Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and know very well how proud everyone is of his or her identity.

Your use of the word "country" in this quote shows how confused you are.  When you say "Please don't presume to tell me how my country runs," which "country" are you referring to--England or the U.K.?  Your profile says you're from Bradford, which is in England.  So, by your logic, your country is England.  I'm not talking about England.  I'm talking about Scotland and Wales.  (Again, I didn't include Ireland in this; you keep shoving it in, and also pretending that there's no difference between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.)  Therefore, since I'm not talking about England, I'm not telling you how your country runs.

But in fact I really do think I understand how the U.K. runs better than you do.  Sorry if that bothers you.  The only thing I don't understand, and am resigned to believe I never will, is why England sends its own team to the World Cup.  If England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland could agree and play as a U.K. team, you know, they might actually win one time.

Id love to see you go to Scotland, Wales or Ireland and tell them they are not seperate countries. Do you know (obviously not) how proud those people are of their seperate identities. You would be ripped apart. Please dont presume to tell me how my country runs.

Dtesmoac -> RE: Minority but what the Hell lol (7/9/2006 5:26:02 PM)

it gets worse.................my Mum was welsh...........but in the UK since the seperate parliaments were set up for Scotland and Wales a lot more people are using term English who used to say British.......

Would love to argue on the history pre 1600 but I think our US friends would start to Yawn.

I have never said there is no difference between northern and southern ireland and if you read my posts properly you will see that.
Why do you have such a big problem with the state of our football teams?
How well did the USA do?
Not as good as us if my memory serves me correct and we did crap.
My last and finally reply to you is you know what thought did........
