BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/29/2014 6:08:43 PM)

A few days ago I saw an article in the science news concerning a Bishop whose work anticipated the notion of a multiverse. Did religiosity inhibit William of Ockham? He was not an atheist. The problem you have is with the Protestants. Many Protestant denominations have rejected reason altogether, buying into an argument that was put forth by William of Ockham.

These truths, he teaches, are known to us by revelation alone.

Atheists if we are to stick to the definition of the word, are merely anti-theists, believing in no god...nothing more, nothing less.

In other words what you are saying is that atheists don't in general explore the significance of their actions.

Atheists don't need to explore the significance of anything anymore than believers in any god.

I agree it is evident that atheists do not "exercise a lot of brain cells" and there is according to atheism "far more important things not to believe in" like the belief that it is important to keep your pants zipped.

I can't help thinking that religionists assume that we non-believers exercise a lot of brain cells in our non-belief. I don't think most of us do. We just think, 'Well, this is nonsense', and move on to other stuff. There are far more important things not to believe in, frankly.

There is no evidence one way or the other that would conclusively prove to what extent atheists or those who believe in god...exercise their brain cells. Obviously, those who believe in a god would exercise some of their brain cells in that belief whereas those who do not believe...would not.

No spliff here, whats so alien about seeing nature as a supreme being. I see it little different from sunworship wich is natural as well.
You just dont like it I worship a god that does exist.
Boohoo.[:(]

wrong wrong and wrong

rightieright so you're gonna tell me what I can or cannot believe?[:D]Try again and again and again and you will always fail.

You may believe what you want but do not suggest that others who not share your beliefs have some sort of physiological, emotional or mental defect.

BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/29/2014 6:54:50 PM)

You are only saying this after the fact, after I exploited a vulnerability.

BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/29/2014 6:59:22 PM)

Why was the vulnerability there in the first place? Because atheists are thoughtful?

BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/29/2014 7:03:54 PM)

It begs a question, Are atheists as dumb as Protestants?

Will the Protestants ever pardon me for saying it?

I never said that, humans on average use 10% of their brain. I dont know figures for defects.
I do know some believers are a bit coocoo. But crazy people can be fun too, no disrespect intended.

BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/29/2014 7:30:54 PM)

I started the thread with the hope of discussing common ground. Perhaps it is just as well.

You simply can't be serious. After what fact ? Define this 'vulnerability.' There is no vulnerability.

Any contrast in your beliefs to others does not dictate any difference in the use of brain cells because of their beliefs.

You first have to define the word god before you can say I dont believe in god.

I don't think you do, Mr B. I don't believe in fairies, elves or pixies, but I've never really bothered to define any of them.

I can't help thinking that religionists assume that we non-believers exercise a lot of brain cells in our non-belief. I don't think most of us do. We just think, 'Well, this is nonsense', and move on to other stuff. There are far more important things not to believe in, frankly.

If by religionist you mean christian I can only give my opinion based on observation. The atheists I have know haven't mentioned it often and don't seem to give it much thought either. I have met a few both here and in the real world who seem to treat it like a religion and never miss the chance to preach about it, but I think they are in the minority and the only reason they stand out, much like their evangelical counterparts, is because they are so obnoxious about it. I don't ever recall you acting like that so I would have to assume you don't.

MrBukani -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/30/2014 3:28:44 AM)

On average I see a lot of 'atheists' who believe in ghosts for example.

I am not an atheist, but I agree with some of their claims. I agree that according to objective measures religion performs poorly.

I am wondering why the atheists do not want to touch this. What might be their motive? There might be a motive. Can they compete with the combined generosity of all of Christendom? They feel they don't have to. They figure they can get the government to do it for them. It is a slap in the face for all those who have done it voluntarily.

[sm=rofl.gif]

Thanks pal! Talk about some stereotyping. Now if you are basing what you say on the reflection I give, then protestants might look a little coo coo for cocoa puffs. Being serious all the time is way over rated. Life can be enjoyed, I don't think anyone is going to hell for being happy or laughing? I am sure there are some very stone faced serious overly educated protestants out there that might fit your description of the perfect Christian, but its obvious to me, they wouldn't be perfect, because they aren't catholic!![:-]

Athiest aren't worshipping anything, protestants don't worship exactly like you, which really isn't a threat. Now if you want to pick out groups that are the biggest threat, how about growing a pair and picking on satan worshippers maybe?
Now that's a worthy target.

It depends on what you mean by "generosity." If a person with $1,000,000,000 gives $1000, as compared with someone who has $10,000 but gives only $10, which one is the more generous?

BenM just wants to spout religion and you'll notice he frequently answers his own posts; ie, talks to himself. [:D]

He doesn't care what the topic is, he'll soon start spouting his own doctrine ad-nauseum.

Yes, I think he has some of us on "hide."

And you honestly think they all assume the same things about athiests. That seems like a bit of a stretch.

BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/30/2014 11:20:42 AM)

The atheists apparently instead of concluding that the problem is impossible to solve have concluded that there exists a conspiracy.
