And his atheism did not inhibit him a bit.

I never said that, humans on average use 10% of their brain.

That is not correct, not even close.

You should check your facts.

quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_views_of_Albert_Einstein#Agnosticism.2C_Deism_and_atheism

Einstein said, "In view of such harmony in the cosmos which I, with my limited human mind, am able to recognize, there are yet people who say there is no God. But what really makes me angry is that they quote me for the support of such views."

According to biographer Walter Isaacson, Einstein was more inclined to denigrate disbelievers than the faithful. Einstein said in correspondence, "(T)he fanatical atheists...are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who—in their grudge against the traditional 'opium of the people'—cannot bear the music of the spheres."

A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary.

It seems that some of Einstein's views had an Atheist character. I could develop an argument that says Christianity has an atheist character too since Christianity has a scientific character. It doesn't make Christians atheists, however.

BenevolentM -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/30/2014 12:46:49 PM)

I started a thread

Salvation of Prostitutes
http://www.collarchat.com/m_4687263/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

I am reproducing the original post below since I am curious as to what the atheist community has to say on the matter.

quote:

ORIGINAL: BenevolentM

I happened by a IFC film that depicted a woman who is broke and turns to prostitution. I lost interest in the film, but the film did get me thinking. She was inexperienced. A man picked her up for a hand job. One of the things he negotiated with her was he wanted her to talk dirty. She naively told him the truth when he asked her why was she doing this? She said it was because she was broke. What he wanted her to say was she was a horny slut. He admitted that he found her desirable. To me this should lower the barrier for compassion. Human love is imperfect. Though imperfect it is still real. Why aren't the men moved to compassion and say what can I do to get you out of having to do this? Perhaps men are and we just don't hear about it. Perhaps they don't because such feeling is impractical. If so, why would it be? If it is because he is married, I do not see that as an excuse. But perhaps it is unwise because such women cannot be trusted or the system cannot be trusted. Or perhaps it is because it costs money and it is a lot cheaper just to exploit her circumstances than to be of assistance to her.

Comments?

The atheists apparently instead of concluding that the problem is impossible to solve have concluded that there exists a conspiracy.

Which atheists would that be...the ones on this board....the ones you meet in real life...or the ones ghost hunting in your head?

mnottertail -> RE: What do the atheists get right? (4/30/2014 12:52:47 PM)

I think that if god was a prostitute, he would charge more for a handjob than any churchgoer is putting in the collection plates these days. It is not any less than a miracle to have your clown dusted by the hand of god.

Waaaaa whoooo

Wow. Did you just pop your cork?

Aren't you aware that atheists have a collective fantasy?

No, anyone who subscribes to any religion.

And you honestly think they all assume the same things about athiests. That seems like a bit of a stretch.

What? No. Where did you get that idea?

Only in your head BM [:D]

Out here in the real world.... they don't.

As an atheist I'd argue that one of the most important things atheists get right is divorcing the concept of moral behavior from religious doctrine.

Respecting life is moral. Having an arbitrary day of the week when people can't work isn't.

Because when I asked if you meant christians in response to this "I can't help thinking that religionists assume that we non-believers exercise a lot of brain cells in our non-belief. " and you replied "No, anyone who subscribes to any religion. " which covers a whole lot of people. Now I am sure that some of them probably think exactly what you said. But I have found the majority of them that I have dealt with really don't give you much thought at all. Like you they seem to be busy enough just living their own lives. Much like the majority of atheists I have met.

Well, we have crossed wires and it might be my fault. Perhaps I should have inserted qualifiers like 'some' or 'there's a tendency' - amongst religionists (given my definition of that word) overall. I've certainly met plenty of Christians, Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists who grasp where, for instance, a (most) atheist like me is coming from.

If god exists, atheists do have a collective fantasy. For real, in the real world.
