ORIGINAL: OriginalRebel It depends what they are using as a sweetner Greta. They usually use regular white sugar as sweeteners. That bbq pork or sweet and sour pork or lemon chicken sauce has literal basic white sugar poured into it. Hell one thing peking duck places in the west does not do is literally take the peking duck crispy skin and dab it on pure white sugar. The paper thin crispy salty savoury of a duck skin with crunchy white process sugar is heavenly. Every time when I host Caucasians, that's the first thing I bring them to try! Now we use dark soya sauce in alot of our dishes, and dark soya sauce is a little like reduced balsamic vinegar which tends to be extremely rich and sweet. Except reduced balsamic vinegar is used sparingly in Italian food but we chinese soaked our entire meats in it, and even dump it in huge amounts into our soups and gravy. I am unsure if reduced balsamic vinegar has sugar added, as with grapes, natural sugars can play a big part, but dark soy sauce definitely has white refined sugar added to sweeten it. I'm just saying traditionally, it's even harder to find an obese Asian. But with the introduction of Western food cause more obesity now. And it certainly isn't sugar, because our food was laden with white refine sugar traditionally as well as evil processed carbs. Processed white rice is super staple. But specifically with chinese people, many die early of heart diseases and high incidence of diabetic, even the ones that look aneroxicly skinny, because our food is terribly unhealthy, but somehow does not cause weight gain. Interestingly, the ones who live a long life usually survive solely on rice and stir fried veges, because they may be Buddhists as well and won't eat meat. Processed white Rice is pure evil carbs and a heavy cause of diabetics among local Chinese in my country. My uncle recently got diagnosed with early stage diabetics, and all he did was drop rice from his diet, and ate only steam fish and vegetables and everything went back to normal. Japanese folks though, if they can stick to their healthy sashimi diet, I think generally they can stay very healthy and live a long life. Can't beat fresh raw fish for nutrition.
