He is 6' 2" 255... In the rams locker room he is a 20 lb weakling compared to his peers.

What he is however is fast for his size.

How many sacks did that 20 pound weakling have last season?

Was playing against teams made up mostly of future accountants, PE teachers and some lawyer types... perhaps he faced from 0 to 3 future NFL players a game in College... Everybody he faces now will be in the NFL.

He's just not that good.

Then when he is cut you can crow.Until then we have only your ignorant unsubstantiated opinion.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Did Michael Sams kiss make you feel any kinda way? (5/15/2014 2:50:50 PM)

It's been substantiated by his pitiful combine performance... I am guessing you are lacking in knowledge about it but his combine was pretty ordinary, even less than ordinary. Sams is strength is questionable, he's short, slow and can't leap, all four are necessary to play linebacker in the NFL

What else do you think constitutes ignorance?

BTW... pre draft.. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/sam-fails-impress-field-combine-article-1.1700030

Well, it's not "real" football,,, it is much more gentle game we play here.

I was searching some statistics and found a sobering bit of information. Only 11 of the 75 5th through 7th round draftees in 2009 were still in football after three years... and even fewer of those were on the same team or starting. I don't think pointing out he has a steep road ahead is unreasonable.

My whole point was besides this steep curve to make the team he will also have to deal with being a spoke person for the gay community.. That could make it even more difficult to succeed.

He will have to put on weight...add strength and speed and learn to cover the run...tough tough tough.

But I do hope he does make it...after all I am from Missouri and he was a Tiger... I believe he would be a good special teams player and if not that he will make the practice squad...But hell... surprises do happen from time to time.

He has already made it as a gay and as a man now I hope the media leaves him alone and let him make it as a professional football player

According to the players league the average nfl carear is 3.2 years.
The comissioner says it is 6 years.
That 6.0 average is 88 percent higher than NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith’s recent claim.
You are referencing a 5 year period,so it is most unlikely that someone would play in the nfl for what would be a normal non sports carear of 30 or 40 years or even a military carear of 20 or 30 years.

http://nflcommunications.com/2011/04/18/what-is-average-nfl-player%E2%80%99s-career-length-longer-than-you-might-think-commissioner-goodell-says/

One fan on the conference call said she has read many times that the average career length of an NFL player is about three years, adding it seemed so many played much longer than that. She asked Commissioner Goodell about his knowledge of NFL career length.

“There is a little bit of a misrepresentation or a misunderstanding on that. Frequently, it is said that the average career is about 3.5 years. In fact, if a player makes an opening day roster, his career is very close to six years,” Commissioner Goodell said. “If you are a first-round draft choice, the average career is close to nine years. That 3.5-year average is really a misrepresentation. What it adds is a lot of players who don’t make an NFL roster and it brings down the average.”

According to a recent NFL Management Council analysis of players who entered the NFL between 1993 and 2002, the average career length for a player who is on his club’s opening-day roster as a rookie is 6.0 years.

That 6.0 average is 88 percent higher than NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith’s recent claim.

“The fundamental principle of our business model necessarily includes that every player only plays for an average of 3.2 years,” Smith said in a March 31 forum with MBA students at the University of Virginia.

Uh, I'm neither a racist nor a homophobe, so I reacted like I would react to any picture of a couple kissing. It was a happy thing. The only possible way to object to this if one is not racist or homophobic is if someone has some sort of Victorian prudery with PDA (by any kind of person). [:)]

2009 was a terrible draft...but it is not too far off the norm... 5-7 have a much harder time then the rounds above... But lets take the gay bit away and just talk football... he was drafted by a pro team so they see something in him.. that alone is something... Lets hope he surprises St Louis.

The only ones that find something like that wrong, are the same bigots that say "marriage is between a man and a women". And those bigots have joined other bigots that hate blacks in a tent. And under that tent are bigots that hate blacks and gay people.

Its called 'The Grand Old Party' tent....

Grand Old Party here...don't hate blacks. Don't hate gays. I'd have to hate my mentor when I was in the service...and I don't. And I'd have to hate several of my cousins...which I don't. And by the way? Just because someone believes differently than you doesn't make them a hater or a bigot.

You might be, but you are a dying breed my friend, the GOP has become, to quote Bobby Jindal, the party of stupid....it is all great and good to talk about the 'liberarian' GOP, but that doesn't mesh with the national party that tried to amend the US constitution to put discrimination in the constitution. Most of the anti gay sentiment comes from "red states", and you don't hear too many democratic politicians equating being gay with pedophilia, besitality and incest the way that several serious candidates for president of the US have said in recent years. It is within the GOP that you see the birther nonsense, or the notion Obama is a muslim radical, and a lot of the rhetoric of the tea party and people like Paul Ryan is based on notions that the budget deficits are caused by people on welfare, and guess who they are implying are 'those people"......and if the GOP is not anti gay, why did John Boehner even refuse to allow ENDA (anti discrimination legislation) come up for a vote? Why? Because he knew that most GOP congressman would vote against it, and he was afraid it would make the party look bad, plus he was running for re-election and by not allowing that to come up, he could go home and please the "GOP" base who might otherwise vote for the tea bagger running against him..and need I mention the "Southern Strategy" that morphed into Ronald Reagan (whose campaign kicked off in Philadelphia, Mississippi, site of the slaying of 4 civil rights workers with the line "states rights", a code word for the Jim Crow era), to the claim by the GOP to white blue collar voters that 'affirmative action took away your jobs' (an exact quote from the party platform).

Yep, there are republicans who aren't haters, the old northeast GOP still exists, but in the party as a whole they have catered to the haters, the racists, the homophobes, the religious right, and it has tainted the party. The fact that the GOP has been led by people from down south in recent decades who belonged to "white citizens councils' says a lot to this.

Sams played in the SEC, which is one of the toughest football divisions around, he didn't play in the Ivy League, and he was voted defensive player of the year in the SEC.....that said, he was drafted where he was because be is undersize for a defensive lineman, and to make it in the NFL he would have to be something of an outside rush specialist or something like that. The fact that someone is even drafted is impressive, they only draft 224 players out of the thousands who play college football between division 1, 1a, 2 and 3.

njlauren -> RE: Did Michael Sams kiss make you feel any kinda way? (5/15/2014 9:42:44 PM)

Average NFL career stats can be misleading, if they include players who are drafted or are unsigned free agents, the number is going to be small, because so many get cut from the hundreds who are at training camp. On the other hand, when they say a player on the opening day roster has an average career of 6 years, I would be careful of that, too, because that doesn't include people on the practice squad and such, and I wonder what the median career is (after all, players lasting 10 years or more, like Peyton Manning, skew the numbers up in terms of average). I would hazard a guess that a typical NFL career is prob between 4-5 years.

As far as the kiss, the sad part is from what I understand it was allowed to happen because no one saw what was on the recording due to some sort of technical issue, so it wasn't previewed, so they kind of just let it roll without reviewing it..I strongly suspect had that not happened, ESPN prob would not have shown the kiss, from what I read they kind of implied that. Pretty sad, I thought it was cute, and I thought it was wild that his partner is such a contrast to him, he is a pretty big guy, and his partner is kind of slim looking:). In some ways kind of reminds me of Vince Wilfork of the Patriots, who is this 300 pound monster, and his wife is this short little pepper pot.

kdsub -> RE: Did Michael Sams kiss make you feel any kinda way? (5/16/2014 7:59:59 AM)

Remember the Rams have the best tandem pass rushers in the nfl already. That fact will make it hard to make the team eve as a backup. They already have two accomplished backups in place with impressive statistics.

But it is often said in today's nfl you cannot have too many defensive back pass rushers.
